Two-time Academy Award®--winner Emma Thompson and fellow double Oscar®-winner Tom Hanks top line Disney's "Saving Mr. Banks," inspired by the extraordinary, untold story of how Disney's classic "Mary Poppins" made it to the screen.
When Walt Disney's daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers' "Mary Poppins," he made them a promise-one that he didn't realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney's plans for the adaptation.
For those two short weeks in 1961, Walt Disney pulls out all the stops. Armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs from the talented Sherman brothers, Walt launches an all-out onslaught on P.L. Travers, but the prickly author doesn't budge. He soon begins to watch helplessly as Travers becomes increasingly immovable and the rights begin to move further away from his grasp.
It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that Walt discovers the truth about the ghosts that haunt her, and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.

If you were a kid in 1964 and saw Mary Poppins, this movie will pull every heartstring and push every button of your childhood, and will restore the meaning of Walt's work. I remember being told that Walt was in the park one day when my family was there during the Tencennial in 1965. Emma and Tom did an excellent job! A Must-See Movie!!! Well done!!
This movie is criminally underrated

Between Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, Toy Story, The Polar Express, Captain Phillips, and now this I think its safe to assume that Tom Hanks is one of the greatest acting talents alive.

I remember driving back from Disneyland and this trailer was finally released. We pulled over immediately to watch it. 10 years has flown by so quickly. I remember it like yesterday. We couldn’t wait for this to be released and were there opening night.

it really is a shame that Travers never liked the finished film. But to be honest, I wouldn't have wanted done any other way than how Disney did it.
Daniel Thibeault she actually did somewhat like the movie a few decades after the original theatrical release.
Watching this trailer is making me miss Walt Disney. Though I never knew or met him personally, he is what made my childhood so wonderful. He IS my childhood. His movies have taught me so much and I'm grateful to him. I need to watch this movie..NOW.
Words can not describe my excitement. I have never been this excited about a movie. Ever. EVER. EVERYTHING IS PERFECT.
The part where Travers was flipping out how we (Americans) think fluff and sugar make children ok, it sorta made me think. I grew up with sugar and fluff in a very 60s upper middle class (and rich) very white American community in San Diego where our folks did try sheltering us kids from all the realities and bads. But they did so with love and care for us. But I think they just wanted us to have some enchanting life which maybe eluded them. This movie is one of my enchanting memories, Mary Poppins that is. I was just six. Back then people dressed up nice for a movie. I remember mom putting on my little suit and clip on tie. We went to the old Spreckles theater downtown. It was a big event too. If I recall there were even two of those big old searchlights out on Broadway beaming up in the night sky back and forth, making their loud electrical buzz noise. Yes, all of that is a very good memory of a very special childhood. It makes me miss my parents very much. Grandparents too. Aunts. Uncles. Sadly a few cousins too taken too young.. They all were the best family ever. ❤

I'm excited for this movie. It's really unlike anything any Disney has ever done. A movie about the steps that were taken to create a movie based on an amazing book (which I have read and loved).
I found this an excellent movie, but also very painful if you grew up with an alcoholic. When you've lived most of what they show in the movie. I can't imagine having to go through that when it was just a weakness. How pathetic and how sad.
Watching an alcoholic die so slowly is horrific.
It does portray the pain of alcoholism in such a realistic way.
This looks incredible, holy crap. I can't believe how many times I skipped this ad before realizing what it was and actually stopping to watch it.
I just can't stop watching this! The first time I saw this trailer....I cried. The next time I saw it....I can't stop clapping! Over and Over and Over....I just can't wait! Tom appears to be doing a great job as Walt.....I'm just so excited to see this movie! Open! Open! Open! It will be SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS!!!! YAY!!!

I was told by one of the Disney animators during the old days with Walt that While Tom Hanks may not look like Walt or sound exactly like him. Tom Hanks IS Walt Disney!
this...this is a movie that needed to be told. A movie for people to see and understand the beauty and the wonder behind the woman who gave birth to Marry Poppins, and the man who brought her out of her pages, and onto the moving screen...one day I will be in those shoes, and I will be the one working to make something to make children smile and laugh...of this I swear

Well... charming just doesn't cover it. But, that's the only word that I can come up with to describe them. Tom Hanks adds a showmanship to Walt's character and Emma Thompson makes a perfect headstrong British mom. I'm excited to see this.

Question: Does Tom Hanks play extremely well as Walt Disney? If so, then they should make a FULL biography movie about Walt Disney.
Thee are so few films that can make you feel young and I believe by just viewing this trailer, it will make not only older people feel young, because who doesn't like Mary Poppins, but it will bring smiles and laughter to younger ones as well. Looking forward to seeing this in theaters.

Went to see this movie on the night it came out into cinemas (since I am a big Mary poppins fan and have been since I was a child) and it was absolutely amazing! I knew some background to how the film was created but I also found out a lot too about how the film was made and also life lessons. This film means a lot to me too since my dad is an alcoholic except he never cared for me like PL Travers' father. Thankyou so much Disney for making this amazing creation!!!!🌸🌸🌸

You're dealing with a serious addiction. It will always seem to take precedence. Many people don't survive it, and alcoholic death is nasty business.
It literally ruins the brain. But don't live in that space where you live thinking he didn't love you. All parents love their kids. Whether or not they know how to do so well, that's another story.
You have to remove the drugs/alcohol/addiction from them to truly see it.

and Tom Hanks was a great choice to play for Walter. being the voice of Woody from Toy Story, a freaking great Disney movie, he would know the magic needed to be Disney.

It's very possible that the screenplay was written with Julie Andrews in mind to play Travers but Thompson is a better choice.
If Julie Andrews had played her, that would've been some epic amount of meta, beyond-the-looking-glass stuff. Thompson will no doubt be entertaining, but if Andrews had played her, it would've ripped a hole in the space-time continuum.

Such a beautiful movie and it was wonderful to see the back round story of the movie. Now when I go to see Mary Poppins, I will actually know the meaning and the heartache behind it.

Not to mention the fact that it takes place in the 60s; omg I just cannot wait! Movies that take place in the 50s and 60s makes me feel so good, like I'm living in that time period. Plus it'll be great to hear the story of how Mary Poppins came to be, and of Walt Disney himself. I cannot wait!!
