i know the feeling of just trying to get to your pickup or delivery and have to deal with traffic lights. you come up on a stale green light and you’re talking to the light. “stay green ... green , green, green, GREEN DAMMIT!”
Well planned on your part Luke. It does not cease to amaze me that in such a tightly regulated industry that more thought is not given to the individual driver who is out on the road to call it safety wise and shelter down and avoid dangerous conditions there is too many drivers being pressurised by just in time deliveries and young inexperienced traffic coordinators. No commercial cargo is worth risking a drivers life for.
Agreed Mike. As a HGV class one driver myself with 10 years behind the wheel I’ve learned too say no, especially too planners who try to pressurise you into potentially dangerous situations as in bad weather, high winds, heavy rain, snow Ice, if you feel unsafe the answer is no. What’s the worst their going too do? Annoy your transport manager. But I’m not risking my life and others for no Load or job urgency or not. Trouble it’s the newly qualified, younger drivers they pick on and target. But your are spot on, safety is not optional it’s a must, especially in our industry and Luke will tell you exactly the same. And I imagine like me Luke doesn’t stand for any s#*t, especially off the industry bullies and there’s plenty of them.
i was driving through Miami during a bad tropical storm. the I-95 was completely stopped because even fully stopped and my wipers going full tilt boogey i still had absolutely zero visibility. from the downpour of rain to say it was a “brollybuster“ or “coming down in stair rods” would be an absolute sick and gross understatement .
Yes agreed 100%. Sometime traffic lights cause more traffic problems than they solve. But guess it keeps someone in a well paid jobs in the local councils and highways planning dept😉
Wind is no joke, firm I work for 12 or so years ago issued a stop notice to all its drivers during a storm, everyone ( hundreds of trucks) were ordered to park up ASAP. One of the trucks had been blown over and the driver injured. A week later I pulled into one of their yards and the truck was parked over in one corner looking pretty smashed up, there was a large fence post that had penetrated the grill, gone through the dash and imbedded itself in the drivers bunk, fortunately for the driver it went between the driver and passenger seats missing the driver by a few inches, very lucky escape. Quite a sobering sight. About 10 years before that I was in a 7.5 tonner following a curtain sider up a road in high winds, fortunately there were trees along the road sheltering us, then at a gap in the trees the wind lifted the wheels on one side of the trailer of the curtain sider right off the ground, fortunately I was fully loaded so heavy so as I went past the gap I stayed upright. Always tighten curtains up fully, never leave them slack, they act like a sail in high winds.
Great decision to go to Swansea on the Thursday evening with the weather. The following morning 2 HGV,s went over on the M4 just out of Swansea. They were curtain siders. Great video .Take care and stay safe .
On Friday I drove back from Driffield in my truck full off live fish. Back to Downton, 2 trees down 4 miles from the farm . Home safe and sound by 16.30. Be safe Luke.
I live in Cornwall and was doing deliveries in a curtain sided van, we were right by the danger spots, St Ives and north coast. God it was scary! Nice video :)
Great vid as usual, I was impressed with the layout and delivery set up at your first two drops, "Squires", they seemed well organized. Poor driving conditions but you made a safe journey. All the best Luke.
I used to be on milk and on nights during a storm it’s not fun, in the dark, middle of the countryside, trees down everywhere, standing outside next to your truck pumping milk as tress are creaking and groaning in the wind all around you, not fun.
That must have been very scary for you Luke and to every other driver who drove throughout the storm. I take my hat off to all of you drivers for driving though very dangerous conditions.
Yeah that was just a bit windy wasn’t it 😳 had plenty of trees and fences down around me. Glad you’re safe mate, also that BMW driver isn’t an accurate representation of the rest of us, just saying 👀🤣
I was in a artic curtain sider up north Norfolk and it wasn’t too bad. Quite a few trees had been down and at least one car hit a fallen tree. I could feel my truck moving like you. And a few of the businesses I had pallets for were closed. And I am a new pass only had my licence a week haha.
Another great vlog Luke. It’s the gusty winds that are more dangerous because you can’t gauge if it’s safe too drive or not. When it’s continuous high winds you can tell there and then, but as a class 1 like you, I got caught in a curtain and a massive gust caught the trailer, went over on two wheels for about 3 seconds and kid you not mate, I absolutely s#*t myself, I thought the lot was going over with me behind the wheel. I pulled straight over at the next services, rang my planner and basically told him I’m not driving any further until the storm has passed. I had all the crap “ you’ve got to be there on time, we’ll get a fine if we don’t” sorry I’m not risking my life and others for any job or load. I have no doubt you’d do exactly the same.
That was a bit of a hairy trip! Thanks for sharing it. Many years ago, part of my job involved going out to help people who got ‘stuck’ due to the weather or other conditions. It always made me smile. They couldn’t get through, but I was expected to - regardless! 🙄
I had a drop at cricklade, your neck of the woods and I drove an empty curtainsider all the way back to the north east. It was certainly an experience...
Drove down from Lincolnshire in the east mids to st Ives in Cornwall empty on a Fridge trailer, definitely had me gripping the steering wheel, felt so sorry for anyone on curtains!
Why would I want to get rid of agencies when it's not mandatory to come to work , get more money than full timers, plus I don't have to fill out no holiday form for them to tell me I can't have those days because XYZ already took those days?
10:00 if this is your road rage Luke you won't want to see mine, luckily no swear jar lol, totally stupid of that BMW to pull in like that. I would say they are probably lost though since they seemed unsure at the junction but its a good example of people not paying attention, just drive on take the next exit but instead people swerve through lanes or slam on their brakes
Driving a load from Burnham on sea near Weston-super-Mare in Somerset Back up to Birmingham and we we're getting battered by strongest gusts all the way the up but as we were approaching Bristol there's almighty bang as we get blown sideways into the central reservation luckily we managed to get back control of the vehicle and managed to carry on to our destination with nothing but a few scrapes after stopping at services to regain some much-needed rest and to report the incident to relevant people and check for damages and as you can gather we we're very shaken up
The one I like is when you get someone in like a Fiat 500 wobbling all over the motorway screaming. Like... yeah fuck off I'm 16 foot tall and I'm driving in a straight line 😅
Geoff here in australia hi Luke very surprised to see you standing on your truck while been loaded, as here in australia they will not load you if you stand on your truck or sometimes if you get out of the truck.
When my mum was on jsle of skye it was very windy but no weather warnings inforce, my mum was in the red zone but she said Isle of skye was still worse than the red warning g down In the se England, jt just shows the difference between South and North,
Luke what watch face/ wind complication was that you were using? That looks really cool. What made me laugh was it was too windy for the wind turbines in the port. Lol.
Friday for you is Monday for me. It's been one hell of a week so far with the weather. a lot of debris and near misses all over Essex where I was sent Friday, luckily missed it all though.
Saw a lorry in front of me on A1. Get n/s rear wheels in the air, weren’t nice seeing it must’ve been worst driving it. Thankfully it come back down on his wheels
Wandering UA-cam and found your vlog....interesting.....subscribed .. add it to narrow boating/van trips and Scotland with Steve🤗.....much better viewing that T.V thanks Jan Adelaide Sth Aust😊
Very good vlog again luke I have my respect for you and other truckers and people that need to go out to work in the storms one question though what would of happened if you couldn't get to Avonmouth what would you had to of done? Looking forward to the next one
If it gets too bad just refuse to drive any further. No job or load is worth losing your life over and god forbid if your trailer and truck gets blown over a car with family, children inside. We as truck drivers may survive but the inhabitants of the car are toast.
it’s surprising how light sone cargo can be i’ve hauled loads of beer from any one of many anheuser busch breweries and they load us out to maximum weight. 80k lbs gross weight. then Kellogg’s loads hauling Eggo toaster waffles which fill the entire trailer front to back and to top to bottom and we gross out at 55-60k lbs
Luke, love the shades! I need a pair but got a head about the same size as yours and can never find a decent pair of sunglasses that fit what make are yours & have they got a name? TIA
That parking at around 20 minutes would give me a ticket here in Sweden, not allowed to park in the oncoming lane, it is fine in say Norway which is why many tourists get fined when they visit Sweden :)
@@lukecinahgv Lucky, i parked like that here during a delivery, and within 10 minutes i had a parking guard there telling me that it was not allowed but she let it slip since i was leaving, but would likely had cost me £90 in fine.
Well done luke for getting through it but as you said it helped you having a flatbed and not a curtain sidder,I know towards the end you were stuck as the tree was across the road so had to put your hazards on to warn people and you were saying you were annoyed that cars were going around you but then why would cars wait behind you if they could get past,no point having lots of cars stopped for no reason but understand you couldn't go anywhere👍👍
I’d stick with the NHS mate if I was you. The private sector is completely different to the public sector NHS. You won’t get the pension scheme and things like good sick pay in our industry. If your off sick you might be lucky and get a few weeks sick pay etc, but nothing like in the NHS.
Lol there a gate down that road Luke so the Sat Nav is wrong. You was lucky you left when you did as they closed the M4 before Magor at Junction 24 so couldn’t have even gone up the M48 to Chepstow.
This is class 1 driving right? class 2 is for rigid vehicles? Sorry, im new to this but I want to learn. I begin my practical training from the 26th which I assume is for my class 2.
I can safely say that these last 2 weeks have been the worst weather wise in my 15 years Class 1 driving. I'm surprised dozens of drivers weren't killed in that wind. Going up the A1 at Darlington the rain was horizontal, there were trees blowing onto the road, you couldn't see the lanes cos of the standing water and the wind was so strong it lifted my trailer wheels. The numb nuts children doing the planning in our office were laughing that it was "Only Amber" so keep them going out. Who else gets paid peanuts to risk their lives? Only soldiers.
i know the feeling of just trying to get to your pickup or delivery and have to deal with traffic lights.

A truck or load can be replaced a lot cheaper than a drivers life which cannot

I always find, when junctions and roundabouts have power cuts causing the traffic lights not to work, it mostly seems to flow so much nicer
They should turn them off at non-peak times
