Here’s something I really don’t get. On the original Zappa “Live in New York” album/LP Cuber plays a short but extremely creative and humorous solo on the song “The Purple Lagoon.” It comes right after Michael Brecker’s extended sax solo. I couldn’t believe it years later that Cuber’s solo had been removed from the CD version. Instead of the baritone sax, it goes from Brecker straight into a terrible and long guitar solo that Zappa apparently dubbed in after the fact. All these supposed Zappa experts, as far as I know, have never made note of it. It’s the reason I will never even consider buying the CD version. (The first time I had borrowed it from a friend.)
This dude absolutely SMOKES on Benson's first two albums. Fantastic playing.
RIP Ronnie Cuber (80) ;-(
Amazing history. Heroes amongst heroes.
