Since 1962, The Dubliners have been enthralling audiences worldwide with their music and song. The strength and attractiveness of The Dubliners has always been in the personalities of the musicians who have made up this boisterous band of balladeers, from original members, Ronnie Drew, Barney McKenna, Luke Kelly, Ciarán Bourke, John Sheahan and Bob Lynch to the arrival at different stages of Jim McCann, Seán Cannon, Eamonn Campbell and finally the peerless Paddy Reilly.

This is the song my grandad loved he passed away in 1st September 2021... He wanted it as his funeral song but noone listened to me....so right now I am beside his baby coffin "ashes" on his bed playing this song ...I took care of him for the last few months and knew his favourite songs but this one is beautiful... I drank a whiskey on his last night with him and slept beside him and held his hand and thanked him for been my grandad...but this is the song he treasured and it's so heart crushing to know noone listened to me about his funeral song and the song they played was by far a song he would have hated as he requested this song for his funeral crematorium ... Sad but now I get to listen to it a couple to times for the next 4 weeks till he gets buried...RIP Martin mulhall you will always be loved and treasured by your grandson
This is. A beautiful song 😘
I feel for you but don’t dwell on the opportunity that others missed. Instead, treasure this song as a special connection that just the two of you had. And whenever you hear it, feel free to unabashedly cry or rejoice - whatever you heart tells you to do.
I played this version at my dads funeral last year. He loved this song so much.
sorry for your loss, treasure your memories, you will meet again, truly a beautiful song. RIP Martin.
¡Qué hermosos sentimientos por tu abuelo! Mis respetos por los recuerdos que vas a conservar para siempre. No te aflijas. Mientras tú vivas y escuches esta, "su canciôn", su alma abrazará la tuya, y algún día él te recibirá con alegría allí donde está.
Saludos desde Chile.
I'm from Poland, but still think this is the best 'Hope" song of all time.
My mother was from Derry. She's been gone nearly 2 years now. I'm missing her very badly today.
Keep your head up mate👍
this is the song my grandma always sings to me. She is 104 years old 👍
Wow! I wonder what really goes through the mind of a person that lives to 100 plus. I am almost 77, my mother passed in 2020 and my father is still alive. With my health I thought I would pass away before any of my parents but it didn't work out that way.
That's lovely. I hope your granny is still singing to you!
This song is only 51 yrs old. Your grandma would have learnt it in her 50s.
I’m not from Ireland, but that song brings tears to my eyes
“We’re Irish not because we were born in Ireland, but because Ireland was born in us” forever my favourite country 🧡
Beautiful
Please make sure to visit Ireland x
My Grand Father was from Inisheer. I was named after him. I was born Second Gen. "Fenian" Irish and this stuff goes RIGHT to My Soul!
I Miss My Grandpa and My Parents and Sisters SO MUCH! This stuff just KILLS me! :(...

Lived in Cong, County Mayo for 12 years growing up. As an Englishman, I've never received such welcome and sense of community despite the historical rivalry between our two great nations. I will always remember that small, beautiful countryside town but whenever I hear this song I can't help but shed a tear for my love of that place.
God bless.
Thanks Mate....we forgive, but don't forget...You're still more than welcome!
This song makes me proud to be Irish. And I am not even Irish. ❤️🇮🇪
i relate. totally
Me too
I’m Welsh and need to make that distinction because of the disgusting treatment of the Irish over the centuries by our neighbours in England.. A very contemporary and pared down but oh so soulful interpretation of this song is by the wonderful young singer/songwriter Zoe Clarke and for me is the most beautiful of all. Zoe busks her own material and covers on Grafton St. and for anybody who doesn’t know her material look her up here on YT, particularly her version of this classic.
Im portuguese been here in Ireland since I was child (1999). I Love Ireland
Dad used to play this to me as a kid.. passed away on the 17th December 2020. Very proud of my irish blood and I take great peace that hes up there wherever that may be with all his brothers drinking guuness and putting the world to rights!!! This world will never be the same again without you here mate.. but ur now at peace and dont u worry, il look after our girls.. till I see uagaian dad this will always be our song!! Love ya.x

A very touching story. thank you for sharing
My condolences to you and yours, on your dad's passing. I was just thinking about my dad and this song today, as I came across your comments. My father also passed away, on October 15, 2020 and he used to play this song on the record player back in the 70', 80's and 90's, as a youngster, if you can believe it. He was a true Dubliner, if there ever was one. He and I were both born in the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin. I live in Vancouver, Canada and will make the trip back to Dublin next year to spread his and my mom's ashes in a suburb called Marino, where we lived for a short time, before emigrating to Canada in the late 60's. And yes for sure, we will see you again in Ireland. Best wishes.
I’m from Liverpool and lived in NYC got to sing this with him at 2am at his bar on Lexington Ave. I still re live to this day almost 30 years later. Why can’t we just get on !!!!!!!!!
One of my dads favourite songs who i lost october 2023 few wks before his 79th birthday, (11/11) we got this played at his funeral, i have fond memories of him singing this with a grouse whiskey n lemonade in hand. Miss him so much! Thankyou dad for 41 amazing years and teaching me guitar and for loving ur 6 kids more than ever! Rip dougie xx
Mein Beileid, ich liebe dieses Lied😭
Phil Coulter, one of the most prolific songwriters of all time, said that in 100 years if he could be remembered for one thing he wishes it would be for writing this song.
This song makes me cry.
"Spirit is bruised, but never broken."
This is my grandas favorite song, he got diagnosed with stage 4 cancer not long ago, me and my cousin learned it for him
This song kills me 😢 I can’t listen without crying my eyes out! Imagining my granny and aunts all working in the shirt factory. All the sacrifices the mothers and fathers made for their families as that is what truly matters. Love and blessings to everyone, while many of us are far away our beloved Derry always calls us home ❤
❤
Beautiful msg...Thank you. Love and Blessings to you too from Australia ..
A heartbreak yet beautiful delivery of how things were in my hometown Derry. Paddy Reilly's voice has carried me away for years. One of the best! Thank you for this song Phil Coulter. Connects us all.
This song was played as we carried my dad's coffin it was his favourite he passed away Christmas day 2020 I miss him so much
Sorry for your loss😢
There is something about the quality of paddy reilly's voice that has a richness to it. I don't know how to explain it, but his voice is very comforting to my ear. God bless us all.
I find baritone voices very easy to listen to, also. His voice has a wonderful depth to it.
Comforting, that's the word to describe this performance.
This is an incredible song. True poetry.
I can feel it in my heart.
Celtic Brothers, may God bless you
❤
I was born in the bogside in the 50s. Lived in London since the 70s. This song always brings a tear to my eye
Such an amazing song. Tragic that so many people are completely unaware of the amazing, heart felt and heartbreaking lyrics in traditional Irish music. 💙
I'm listening on new year's eve 2020 , what happened to the world that we loved so well?
I am 82 now and always wanted to go t IRELAND I LOVE THERE MUSIC wish i had gone now
If you listen to the quality of paddy reilly's voice versus him singing the same song 20-30-40 years before, today's voice has a much fuller and deeper quality to it. Perhaps it is all the nights in the pubs and concert halls, but I certainly love today's version. God bless Paddy Reilly.
The same thing happened to lenord cohen
Im a Northern Ireland studies student. I study a fair amount of history and complicated issues in belfast. While this song is about Derry i feel deeply touched while thinking that it must have been a similar story in Belfast. Just hope the peace is a durable one and no more hatred and violence in Northern Ireland.
They are my favorite singers ever!! If they came here, i'd hitch a ride back with them to spend whats left of my life!♥
Way back in the late 1960s and early 70s I used to go to their concerts on the rare occasions they came to Edinburgh and they played to packed houses. Along with The Corries and The Clancy Brothers surely they must rate as the greatest folk groups ever.
Paddy sings this great song so well , a song written by Phil Coulter. .
Phil never wrote it as a political song.
But it became a song that describes the City of Derry and the People who suffered from the Usurpation from a mighty foreigner that WILL NEVER EVER DESTROY THE DERRY PEOPLE
I've seen you 3 times in the later 90th. YOU ARE THE ORIGINAL! Pure and simple.
Send greetings to Ronnie in heaven! ❤❤❤
quite simply, the best version i have ever heard. Great voice.
Luke Kelly

Paddy is one of Ireland's great folk singers he played in our folk club in the late 60s in lurgan norther Ireland the voice is still as good
So good to remember where I came from it's been to long
You don’t have to be Irish to love this or she’d a tear love it Dinger
Wonderful Performance and Beautifully Sung 😊🙏☘️
Such a poignant song for the trouble current world situation- war solves nothing, only creates Orphans, widows, and blood shed, heart break, tears. What we need is hope❤🙏
And when times got rough there was just about enough !
What a line! reminds me of Fogerty’s proud Mary /
you don’t have to worry cause you got no money
People on the river are happy to give ...
This man’s voice just hits different - my favourite voice in Irish music, instantly recognisable. I’m 38 and we used to listen to a cassette tape of one of his live shows in the car when I was a kid 😂😍
Beautiful song sung beautifully thanks Phil for giving us such a gem
So many of us have the town we loved so well. For me it's Buchans. Smack dab in the middle of the island of Newfoundland. A base metal mining town in its roots. No place like it on earth.
I’m listening to it now for your Grandad and for you. I raise my glass to you both.God Bless.
To me luke Kelly will never be beaten even do I was only 3 when he died but I love paddy and all the great singers r little country has produced respect to all people
For me one of the most beautiful Irish love song for this beautiful town
Absolutely Awesome. I could listen to this literally over and over again. Paddy - take a bow.
Such a rich and heartfelt voice.
He sang it many times on his own. But this is the best version of it. Paddy rielly
Friggin Paddy Reilly’s voice is smooth and salty like my tears
🇮🇪 thanks for keeping it real long live ireland
When I was on an university exchange program in Limerick, 30y ago- I learned to know this fantastic song; tears in my every time😊
Their music is timeless and precedes most of today's music. One never gets tired of listening to their songs
I love Paddy’s and Ronnie’s versions in equal measure. Both perfect voices on different spectrums.
I love this song so much it really makes me think about what my Irish relatives might’ve gone through in Ireland in the mid 1800s. This is my favorite version my other favorite version is by the Irish tenors if you haven’t heard the Irish tenors version it’s great
Excellent. Paddy has a good voice for this one.
Living LEGEND... An Irish Ballads!
It's a beautiful song. It makes me well up both for the loss of the past and the hope for the future. God bless Derry.

Dubliners ‘The Town That I Loved So Well’
In my memory I will always see
The town that I have loved so well
Where our school played ball by the gas yard wall
And we laughed through the smoke and the smell
Going home in the rain, running up the dark lane,
Past ther gaol (jail) and down behind the fountain,
Those were happy days in so many, many ways
In the town I loved so well.
In the early morning, the shirt factory horn
Callde women from Creggan, the moor and the bog
While their men on the dole played a mother's role
Fed the children and then trained the dogs.
And when times got tough, there was just about enough
But they saw it through without complaining
For deep inside was a burning pride
In the town I loved so well
There was music there in the Derry air
Like a language that we all could understand
I remember the day when I earned my first pay
When I played in a small pick-up band
There I spent my youth and to tell you the truth
I was sad to leave it all behind me
For I learned about life and I found a wife
In the town I loved so well
But when I returned how my eyes have burned
To see how a town could be brought to its knees
By the armoured cars and the bombed out bars
And the gas that hangs on to every breeze
Now the army's installed by the old gas yard wall
And the damded barbed wire gets higher and higher
With their tanks and their guns oh my God what have they done
To the town I loved so well
Now the music's gone but they carry on
For their spirit's been bruised, never broken
They will not forget but their hearts are set
On tomorrow and peace once again.
For what's done is done and what's won is won
And what's lost is lost and gone forever
I can only pray for a bright, brand new day
In the town I loved so well.
Beautil song love
Love luke singing this beautiful song
Thank you so much for we made the Irish and a wider part of the British and Scandinavian society....Thank god...They are so great!
Luke Kelly was my favorite one of All, But this guy was definitely next in line to luke Kelly!! Very Good voice!!
Not taking anything away from Luke but I actually like Paddy Reilly's version better
I am Irish and my dad met this man at new York pelin bay
beautiful song
But when I returned how my eyes have burned
To see how a town could be brought to its knees
By the armoured cars and the bombed out bars
And the gas that hangs on to every breeze
Now the army's installed by the old gas yard wall
And the damded barbed wire gets higher and higher
With their tanks and their guns oh my God what have they done
To the town I loved so well 😢 this part of the songs really gets me a town they loved so well with their tanks and guns oh god what have done 😢to a town I loved so well 😢
❤ i love this song
Thanks for watching.
Super song ....Great proformas by the Great Dubliners and Paddy ..
Absolutely Brilliant
Probably Phil Coulter’s loveliest song. After my Mum died, my dad started to get mixed up about some things. One day he said, she left me and went to Derry. I said she didn’t leave you. She had to go but she’s still looking out for us. And why the hell would anyone want to go to Derry for anyway? But I realised because he loved the song that he was talking about the different town he loved so well where he’d learned about life and found himself a wife. His own hometown which he could not leave for love nor money. Except of course on his many holidays.
Beautiful song ♥️♥️👍🙏🎸🎵

Thanks ❤all ❤Beautiful ❤️ Songs ❤️
Met them all in 1967! Gorgeous group but Luke was arguably the most interesting guy I have ever met! Unbelievable man apart from a lovely singer!
He asked my mother out once in Birmingham England, she said he looked too wild...LOL"
Tears in my eyes...sorry..
Beautiful song, Irish music is a history lesson in itself, I believe i can claim Irish heritage as some of my Irish grandparents were from Rathangan in Kildare where they owned a local business. When I listen to Irish music I feel it is in my soul, and I find the lads that sing the songs it’s as if they are singing from the heart. Long live these songs and music.
freeze frame at 20 secs....what a line up. Superb
I wish Luke Kelly was there with them...
Thanks pady
