They obviously set this up, but I'll bet they told Alan and Stephen to keep it a secret from each other. Stephen did suddenly look a bit concerned when he realised Alan had prepared for this moment, obviously thought he could call his bluff.
4:49 Alan looks so proud! Like a little boy in school who's just successfully presented a great finding with his class, to the praise of his teacher. :)
His point was that the term "sacred" has a specific meaning and it does not fit how Hindus perceive the cow. They are revered, and killing one is taboo, but they are not considered to be divine and are not worshiped as gods or god-like, which is what it means to be "sacred". When someone says that cows are sacred to Hindu they are using the wrong word.
Your right but also wrong the same as Alan as sacred is a Christian term and as you know there are Indians who are Christians and there is a lot of Muslims who have some of same beliefs since both religions stem from Judaism (note not Judaism but there source)
Whenever they tape the last-ever episode of Q.I. (Zenith?!), I vote for Phil Jupitus to be one of the last two panelists they have on the show (Stephen Fry being the third!). He contributes so much when he's on!
Poor Alan though. Stephen lets himself get set up like that, deliberately gives some of the answers he knows will set the klaxon off, and ends up with MINUS 56: BUT IS STILL ONLY 4 POINTS BEHIND ALAN, who must have had a disastrous show up to that point!
Water in a sink or toilet doesn't go in any specific direction based on hemisphere. The Coriolis Force is real, but it only applies to objects like hurricanes. When Stephen says he pushes the water to go the other way, he means that he's tried getting water to drain both clockwise and anticlockwise, and that both directions worked. Since his sink is in England, in the Northern Hemisphere, Stephen concluded that hemisphere doesn't have the purported effect upon drainage.
The interesting thing about the... Bose-Einstein Condensate, I remember, is that the collection of matter almost behaves like a single particle or something. I forget exactly what happens, but it's something really wonky.
Looking it up on wikipedia- 'at which point quantum effects become apparent at a macroscopic scale'. The temperature at this point is not much above 0K.
The obvious scripting is most likely for comic effect since Stephen is so intelligent that quite often he will put down the cards and tell facts from memory or go a bit further with the info he has been given and add his own knowledge. You can see that Stephen is doing what Alan does sometimes and getting the obvious answers out of the way, so overall it is a satire of themselves. Well, that is what I see, anyway.
LOL, quite often the 'facts' Fry gives are wrong though. He's so good at sounding convincing but when he happens to talk about something you happen to know well, you suddenly realise just how much he's BS-ing.
Im an Indian, although im not a very religious person im still pretty sure Cows are treated as sacred and statues of them can be seen in almost every temple. Anyway loved this episode, there should be one where alan is the quizmaster throughout the episode and steven is on the panel!!
they might not be sacred, but they sure are holy... thus the term "holy cow" (and BTW they most certainly are represented in temples, just not as the deity, but as their vehicle, and as such some of the sacredness gets passed onto them)
It would have been funny if Stephen Fry was sitting down at 5:00 ... looked at the papers and said....what the hell ?? all the pages are blank :O did you make up all the questions yourself Alan ? xD
I think QI is scripted to a point, but so much of the stuff on the show has got to be off the cuff. While I think Alan and Stephen both knew that Alan was going to take over as quizmaster, I honestly don't think that Stephen knew the questions in advance. Obviously the show did or the buzzers wouldn't have gone off when Stephen gave the obvious, wrong answers.
The Coriolis effect only occurs to large bodies of water. The amount of water in your sink is too small to be affected by that, and is more likely influenced by other factors, eg the shape of your sink.
There was an episode (maybe this one?) where each buzzer announced the contestant's name and place of study. I imagine Stephen Fry studied at Cambridge, and Phill was parodying the buzzer pattern.
That's not true though, QI was completely wrong. There are lots of cow statues in temples across India. There are gods who took the form of a cow and are worshipped.
The part about cows is wrong. Since the coronation of the Modi regime in 2014 people have been killed for eating beef. Even possession of meat has led to lynching. The largest victims have been the Dalits and Muslims.
Somehow, Alan becomes even more quintessentially Alan when he takes the quizmaster's chair.
"Oh Fry, you idiot"
You can hear the pure joy in each syllable.
"OHHH FRY... YOU IDIOT!!"
this was hilarious!!! I love the chemistry these two share, this was so satisfying ;D
Fun fact: Amadeus, Gottlieb and Theophilus are all the same name (Latin, German, Greek).
Wow, didn't think about that before! Thanks for that quirky fact :-)
In slavic countries he probably would've used _Bogomil_
The most glorious five minutes in qi history, as far as Alan is concerned...
They obviously set this up, but I'll bet they told Alan and Stephen to keep it a secret from each other. Stephen did suddenly look a bit concerned when he realised Alan had prepared for this moment, obviously thought he could call his bluff.
Sunny Intervals productions Yes! This!
Its impro
@@gjermund1161 The giant picture of the footballer was impro?
Haha they should do a whole episode like this!
James Robertson for every Christmas episode!
4:49 Alan looks so proud! Like a little boy in school who's just successfully presented a great finding with his class, to the praise of his teacher. :)
Adorable 😄
It's a special time when Alan Davis gets to call Stephen Fry an idiot
I like to think Alan has been carrying that piece of paper around in his pocket since about the third episode in the hopes this day would come.
hahaha "this question for Stephen"
over
and
over
and
over
amazing
'who plays in goal for Aston Villa?' XD
it's true that was my middle name

Michael Edenfield that was very informative. Cleared up a lot for me. Thank you.
Yup, they are revered as motherly figures, that provide dairy products (which are an essential element in indian cuisines).
Your right but also wrong the same as Alan as sacred is a Christian term and as you know there are Indians who are Christians and there is a lot of Muslims who have some of same beliefs since both religions stem from Judaism (note not Judaism but there source)
1:56 - JUSTICE IS SERVED!
lol so funny
Alan "what animal is sacred in India?"
Stephen"Do not say cow, do not say cow!"
.....
Phil"Is it cow?"
That was a nice Christmas present that Stephen got for Alan.
I love Davies' "Oh really?" to Fry's penguin answer, knowing what's coming. :D
Whenever they tape the last-ever episode of Q.I. (Zenith?!), I vote for Phil Jupitus to be one of the last two panelists they have on the show (Stephen Fry being the third!). He contributes so much when he's on!
This was brilliant
You are living art, thank you for sharing this!
This show is the most hilarious I've ever seen 😂
This happened and I'm just finding out :D
Poor Alan though. Stephen lets himself get set up like that, deliberately gives some of the answers he knows will set the klaxon off, and ends up with MINUS 56:

Stephen should have addressed the next question to Alan only.
this is so wonderfully petty xD
Christmas 2004 B series (Birth)
When was this episode aired? There are a lot more than six known states of matter.
prorsoft This is Series "B" Episode "Birth" so that puts it in 2004.
By all means, share you answer to the group. You have solid, vapor, air, newtonian fluid, plasma, leqiud crystal, kekistani meme magic state
I like how the very first thing he said was wrong: "a Swede called Thomas Sørensen" XD
The temperature at this point is not much above 0K.
they have before made new buzzers within seconds
Turnabout is fair play!
Would've been pretty great if Stephen had won
From India, We genuinely worship Cows here!
Ikr... I was so surprised when they said that 😂😂 (from India too)
Alan points that out at 1:24, but says he'll still give Fry credit.
Is Stephen Fry pretending to be Brian Blessed when he says "Do not say cow!"
The obvious scripting is most likely for comic effect since Stephen is so intelligent that quite often he will put down the cards and tell facts from memory or go a bit further with the info he has been given and add his own knowledge. Now it's just seen as a form of catharsis and the shamanic hallucinations of ancient priests have been lost in tradition.
This is so funny you almost forget it was probably scripted
Im an Indian, although im not a very religious person im still pretty sure Cows are treated as sacred and statues of them can be seen in almost every temple.
Anyway loved this episode, there should be one where alan is the quizmaster throughout the episode and steven is on the panel!!
he sort of deserved that a bit xD
So what animal is considered sacred in India ??
they might not be sacred, but they sure are holy... thus the term "holy cow" (and BTW they most certainly are represented in temples, just not as the deity, but as their vehicle, and as such some of the sacredness gets passed onto them)
What was the sixth state of matter???
Fermionic condensate
Love.
What episode is this?
I'd reccomend you just look at the christmas episodes, that narrows it down alot.
birth
Season B episode 12
i reckon it works in a similar fashion to BBC's Outnumbered: the actors are given a script but half of it is their own improvision
that cow thing is so not true...we do have cow idols
It would have been funny if Stephen Fry was sitting down at 5:00 ... looked at the papers and said....what the hell ?? all the pages are blank :O did you make up all the questions yourself Alan ? xD
Alan :(
What episode?
Search for "qi birth"
DO NOT SAY COW
I think QI is scripted to a point, but so much of the stuff on the show has got to be off the cuff. 3:42 University challenge.
So what? It's still funny.
revenge is sweet haha
get henning wehn on the show
Stop arguing about states of matter and WATCH the VIDEO
Nah uh! Water goes clock wise in the Northern Hemisphere.... I don't understand what he means he pushes it to go either way....
The Coriolis effect only occurs to large bodies of water. The amount of water in your sink is too small to be affected by that, and is more likely influenced by other factors, eg the shape of your sink.
Could someone explain why "FRY CAMBRIDGE" was funny?
There was an episode (maybe this one?) where each buzzer announced the contestant's name and place of study. I imagine Stephen Fry studied at Cambridge, and Phill was parodying the buzzer pattern.
Alex Larsen Wasn't this one. Maybe it's like a shitty school game show, where you have to say your name and school before answering?
Grease Fire
There definitely was an episode where they did this, so I still think Phill is parodying that episode's buzzers.
Alex Larsen Yeah, I know they did. Just seems too vague.
Grease Fire
Fair enough. I could be wrong
Cows are worshipped in India...wth...who researched this??
I am Hindu and there are multiple festivals where cows are worshipped.
Rushikesh Ashtikar did you not watch the video? He said that there aren't any statues or temples and they're not worshipped as gods
The problem is people will worship everything in India. I think everyone will remember the photo of a woman bowing Infront of a waste kangaroo.
That's not true though, QI was completely wrong. There are lots of cow statues in temples across India. There are gods who took the form of a cow and are worshipped.
Yes. TV shows are often scripted...
4:15
So what? Secreted means IRS not funny anymore. Boooo how could you do this to us, qi?!
Stephen gets it wrong when he says "A Swede called Thomas Sorensen", he's actually Danish.
Rob T And Alan addressed that part too. :)
Danish/Norwegian is very similar to Swedish though isn't it?
The part about cows is wrong. Since the coronation of the Modi regime in 2014 people have been killed for eating beef. Even possession of meat has led to lynching. The largest victims have been the Dalits and Muslims.
I love this but it's so scripted. Alan had the paper in his pocket for no reason ?
scripted
