I just like seeing the fresh player no money spent grind from your perspective. Now. I will say. I agree with your summary of snipers, not the best unit to attack with, decent for defending, buuuut. If you gave them the fully automatic event pistols. They might just be a decent multirole unit, if very limited. Plus, you can always unlock their second primary weapon slot, OR remove their scopes entirely and use them as more riflemen and grind snipers that way.
Concerning snipers, it depends on map. There are maps where couple snipers with engineer can deal 100+ dead in defence of point without loosing single life. Preferably with some fast reloading rifle. Carcano is nice as it reloads with clips and allows to quickly aim at mid distance, which can be devastating in defence. And then of course things like AVS-36 Sniper with ammo crate around when placed on some nice roof or window up there.. But even better are just normal squads that have one sniper with them. Even when he dies, others can pick his rifle and continue serving some hell :D Soviets are best. Once you have Winchester 1895 you can kill a lot of enemy troops at med-long distance quickly. Later just replace it with AVS-36 or AVT. Planes are very good. I-153 is best dogfighter. Yak-1 can deal with anything in game including BR-V planes and tanks. LA-5 is even better and upgraded LA-7 is ultimate beast. Tanks like T-50, T-34/85, IS-1 can do a lot. DSHK heavy machinegun is best amongst all HMGs. AT guys can have Panzerfaust which is enough to smash any tank.
Oddly enough, I played the game for about a month when it was first released, but I came back to it about a week ago and I came back to having tons of squads that I dont remember ever having, and for all nations except Japan. I have 3 BR IV squads for Russia somehow when I have next to nothing researched lol, did they used to give things away for free or something?
Did you play before merge? (pre-2024) Back then the squad management was quite funky, so I would not be surprised if you unlocked new squads and never found them.. cuz no, I don't think they gave anything for free.
