  • Has the US peaked? For much of the 20th century, the United States of America led the world economically, militarily and even culturally. But is its influence and power now in decline, and what would that mean for the rest of the world?
Lavina Lee, senior lecturer at Macquarie University in Australia, says that the US still has an important and powerful global role, despite the recent growth of other superpowers like China. Richard Heydarian, senior lecturer at University of the Philippines, says we’re already on a path to a post-American world, and that the US relies on its relationships with other countries as much as they rely on the US. Watch the Doha Debates Podcast as our guests debate the role of the US in a changing, multipolar world.

I found this video immensely intriguing as it delved into the shifting dynamics of global powers vying for dominance. Heydarian and Lee's insights highlighted the complexities and uncertainties inherent in today's world. It's a critical juncture where major players-Russia, China, and the USA-are navigating internal struggles, impacting global security and economies. The ongoing power struggle is a thought-provoking narrative that encompasses diverse challenges and implications across various spheres. An engaging discussion shedding light on the evolving landscape of global geopolitics.

Kudos for a wonderful and civil debate with these two convincing speakers!
On my part, I believe it is more plausible that we are heading into a world where regional powers will play a bigger and bigger role in geopolitics. While the United States has (and currently is) the world’s number one superpower, this video has made me realise that countries in all parts of the world have started to break this tradition. On top of that, this trend is helped by multinational organisations between different states (like the EU, ASEAN, MERCOSUR) that helps less influential countries bond together and have a stronger voice. While the situation is not quite the same, I would be interested to see a discussion on the factors that allow this to occur today and why it wasn’t as feasible back in the Cold War years. One of the speakers touched upon the economic differences, but I think this topic merits an in depth analysis on its own. To conclude, while I don’t think the USA is necessarily in decline, multiple countries seem to want to move away from a world “governed” by one “world police” state. That could be because of the political situation in the US, the appetite for more strategical autonomy by more countries or other reasons.

You guys really need to watch and listen to analyst who were in depth with American economic strategy and grand strategy! Example: people like George Friedman, and Peter Zeihan. If you all want to know why Americans are very protectionist about economics and why Americans are leaving the global order. Those very smart people have predicted this moment decades ago..

thanks for the UA-camr/Stratfor folks recommendations :) Our analyses, to be clear, were based on a deep and wide reading of the whole academic and policy literature on American foreign policy and domestic politics through the decades from across the political spectrum, ranging from Luttawak's 1994 piece "Why Fascism is the Wave of the Future" to Anderson's "Imperium"... I also cited these in my own books, including "The Indo-Pacific" (2020).
