- This is a time-lapse video showing the process of doing a scratchboard drawing of the devil to be used on a French wine label. The drawing is done by hand on scratchboard.
A whole lot of talent, and a whole lot of patience. Wonderful work!
Wonderful.. i love this kind of art.
The devil is in the details
Wow I want to be a graphic designer in the wine industry I want to do EXACTLY everything you did to make this wine label soooo radical
Finally! Someone that explains clearly. In a perfectly compressed nature this technique. I have viewed a good number of scratchboard and clay board videos. Most have good works , but have looser feel to the linework. I can now explore this technique on my own. I have done a few linework drawings similar to your works and can now further refine them on a white clay board / scratchboard like this. Thank you! BTW, all of the works I have seen are great! Very nice work!
Your work is amazing, i am sure you have heard this many time, But honestly, you are at the edge of your perfection. God bless your soul!
Such a amzing work! Thank u for the well explaination
Awesome! I love your technique Michael.
I'm really good at drawing but haven't really figured out how to take it to the next level. Your videos have given me some ideas, but even more importantly, they've inspired me.
Thanks for that, I really need it.
I like the videos with your explanation.
Woooh! This was so entertaining and mesmerising to watch. Well done!
Very clever. Thanks for sharing.
I love your work. I absolutely love it.
you are tremendously awesome! thank you for all of these tutorials
Mannnn! you are a God of scratchboard drawing!!!!
This is actually incredible, I really need to draw more.
Truly amazing work, I love the scratchboard. I've done several myself, but have never started with the white clayboard and then inked on top. The type I find at my local art supply store are already covered in ink and I use more of a woodcut technique. But I'll have to try this technique!
astounding! beautiful! thanks for sharing the process of how this was made
This is simply amazing, I learnt a lot just watching this video. Your talent is unique Michael. I always make the cross-eyed technique every time I draw too, I loved the magnifying glass tip :)
you are so amazing sir!
This is amazing man, found myself completely hypnotised by it all. Quick question, what kind of pen are you using? Thanks!
So cool i want to do this exact style
Love it! So relaxing, it's therapeutic:)
Man, great explanations you made my day. Keep up the good work!
It's beautiful. Congratulations!
What a distinct voice.
Man, this is just fantastic!!!
Congrats!
Hi, Michael. I am so happy - in your works I found how to make such Illustrations like in old time...I have a book - Rendering in pen and Ink by Arthur Guptill, one of my favorite in such type of drawing, but I see it is not enough. Your technique is excellent! What would you personally suggest, which tutorial, manual or school, where the modern beginner could earn some usefull tips how to begin, how to train precision of movements and accuracy of drawing? Could you please in your videos show some simple advices - which pen, ink, paper should one take to draw? Thank you very much in advance!
Excelent -- greetings from Honduras!
You're a great artist.
This is sooooo amazing.... I wish I had your skills...
@simonmanda
I don't remember exactly, but it was probably about 3 to 4 days to do the actual inking. The pencil stage may have taken up to 5 days, but most of that time is waiting for the clients to make comments. The pencil sketches alone only take a few hours.
Impressive works !!
Amazing, thank you for this.
Brilliant skill.
perfect ❤❤
This is so beautiful work. Not only this. I like all your videos and also your web. May I ask something ? Do you try this on paper with white color pen without scratching ?
You are a genius
This is absolutely amazing! amazing tallent and what a great illustration. Great work. I love this style of illustration.
I have always wondered about old illustrations with contour lines and what I though was a form of cross hatching for the shading. Is this the method that would have been used for all the old line illustrations you see in print ?
+ollie scully No. Those are usually either woodcuts or wood engravings. I do pen and ink on scratchboard. Scratchboard is a medium for drawing. Woodcuts and wood engravings are a type of hand-scribed printing plate.
not bad... where would one find that scratch-board paper ? .. the old architectural drawings printed in books would look like they used a scratch-board drawing technique as well i wonder if the architects who did the drawing did the scratching or a technician etched the designs on a board to be printed in books ?
+Gr8Success I use Ampersand Clayboard, and you should be able to find it online. The drawings you see in books that you mention, were probably woodcuts or wood engravings. These are ways of making a printing block before the days of photo engraving. Scratchboard is just a drawing medium, but my style is an intentional attempt to look like the old engravings.
HWOH Wha.. -*Trying to utter my amazment in the form of words.
Great work, I wish I had the patience ...
Master!
I use Ampersand Claybord for the illustration board and Koh i noor rapidograph pens.
How long have you been drawing? Your skills are so amazing!
40 years professionally.
+sk8nuget 35 years.
I am so amazed, Is the paper you used available in the market? or you create it, if so how did you created it?
Thanks for the information
I'm sorry but I didn't go through the entire video so I don't know if you mentioned it, BUT DO YOU TAKE REQUESTS?!?!?!?!? AHHH this is the perfect kind of style I would love as a tattoo!!
woooooooooooow awesome!!! how long did it took you to do all these?
5 Stars ! Thank you very, very much for the tutorial!
One question that's plaguing my mind.....Is the ink that your using a special ink? Is it Indian ink?
Will a "Sharpie" allow you to "erase"/scrape away the ink to reveal the white under base?
Thank you again and in advance if you have time to answer.
Jimbo
Wow!!!
Michael... how do you know, how do you control "lines per inch", target reproduction size, print technique, etc? How much scalable range do your drawings have? Do you use a gauge to determine parallel spacings for printing from silkscreen to fine offset litho that would handle 300 lpi? How much larger than target size do you draw, or do you ever draw 100% of target size?
you are genius zadrot! put like! ! Put large eggs!
I use a permanent, very black, water-proof ink--Higgins Black magic.
I've never used a Sharpie. Is the ink of a Sharpie permanent and water proof? I think the Sharpie is a type of marker, which means it spreads or bleeds while drawing. I doubt the sharpie will draw a line as clean and black as a technical pen. Experiment.
@scratchboardart hey amazing job! i was wondering, what sort of pens other than sharpies are good for fine point work? also broader strokes because i cant seem to get the ink of my sharpie to 100% black when working on larger portions. its always slight hint of blue, so what other sort of pens would you suggest?
love your art. would like to ask you a question: when you digitalize your superbe works, how you do you turn your black to pure black and the white of the paper to pure white without compromise the perfection of your linework? thanks! rickey
just saw your video with the tutorial of scanning! thanks so much!!!
Amazing .. Do you mind telling me all the materials used in this piece please? ... I love! the concept of the illustration.
Your contour lines break up to create the tone. How do you discern when and where to make these breaks? Is there a general rule of thumb?
супер
What do you charge for something this size?
Love the video, but what songs did you use for it?
consumptionof I want to knoe aswell
Mr. Halbert, whatever you get paid, it's not enough.
i want t know this songs, really fit with the devil draw
How long did it take?
What is the title of the music playing in the background please help
darude - sandstorm
Edith Piaf - "Sous le Ciel de Paris" (Under Paris' Sky)
Beautiful! What pens did you use?
+Cris R. Hernandez Koh-I-Noor's Rapidograph Technical Pens
+Michael Halbert Amazing work! What size of pens did you use in this video and do you stick to a certain black that they sell.. e.i. Standard or waterproof? Thanks!
+Kane Cook The sizes I use most is 00 and 000. I use the standard Rapidograph ink and Higgins Black Bagic ink. They are both India ink and water resistant.
Thank you! I am going to apply this to some artwork in the future.
this is so weird i meant
uhhh this isbso weird
