I just discovered this and am just truly moved to tears each time I listen. I've heard the song many times by others, but David's voice...moves mountains!! Truly gifted and talented and a huge tragedy with his passing. Huge!!
I had what was in retrospect the honor of being introduced to this song by Raul Esparza. We were doing a production of an original musical together in 1987, and our cast party was on his 17th birthday, so we combined the two events. He really wanted to show off the song, so at one point he placed the unfamiliar sheet music in front of me (I was the musical director/pianist) and we gave an impromptu performance. The song blew me away, and Raul, even as a raw, teenaged talent, was just astonishing. Not on the level of this recording (which I consider the definitive performance), but he did a beautiful job. Also, big news: Raul is going to be starring in an upcoming revival of Chess. He'll be playing the American champion, so he won't be singing "Anthem," but he'll tear the place apart with "Pity the Child" at the end of act II. I am seriously looking forward to that.
He's also played The Arbiter in the 2003 Broadway Benefit Concert with Josh Groban(Anatoly), Adam Pascal(Freddie), Julia Munery(Florence), Sutton Foster(Svetlana), and Norm Lewis(Molokov)! Here's clips of him singing The Arbiter in rehearsal and in the show! ua-cam.com/video/Gy7Ysg2t2CM/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/xTzaLdjEhRE/v-deo.html (Several other clips and songs of this concert can be found as well) Furthermore, he's said to have been one of the first American audiences to see the original London of Chess as well!
Thank you for posting this. This man, David Carroll, had a most glorious voice. This is one of my most cherished recordings ever, and for a long time I could not find it anywhere. Used to have it on a CD but it got lost. There are no words for the wonderfulness of this performance with all it's emotion and power and sincerity. Out of this world!
I had tickets to see this on Broadway but it closed before the date on my tickets. A letter went out to ticket holders asking if they wanted to come in before the closing but by the time i made the call it was all sold out/fully booked. Seeing this was to be my 1988 graduation present because of my love of the original 1984 concept LP. Chess remains to this day ine of my favorite musicals and I have many versions.
This to me is the best recording of this song, and the classic in my mind of the "original" of this song. I tried to find it on iTunes and others are there, but not this one. David Carroll had a glorious voice!
He did deserve better, but sadly it is only his memory we can now serve, as this incomparable talent collapsed and died while working on "Grand Hotel", March13, 1992. He was only 41. It is my studied belief that David Carroll -- and the orchestral accompaniment here -- far exceed any of the other efforts to the same end. No hamster here, but that permits us to become focused on the music and Mr. Carroll's voice swelling over us in this amazing paean to one's homeland.
I so wish this original Broadway cast recording was in print on CD or available as an MP3 album! I don't understand why it hasn't been reissued in recent years.
I'm so glad my director is doing this show for the thespians. i feel like this show is an honor to be a part of and that the music needs to be known more. few people can sing as amazing as this man.
Sorry ABBA? Why? ABBA never sang this song. But who do you think has composed this? Yes, Björn and Benny, so you should better thank them for this song because without them it wouldn't exist.
It's David Carroll. I saw him do it live on Broadway and saw him is every show he was in including Grand Hotel and his first broadway show "Oh Brother" (anyone remember that?) Quality of his voice was so amazing it brought me to tear every time I heard him live.
This was amazing.. especially the "How can I leave her... WHERE would I start?" Brilliant. I've heard so many great versions of this by Tommy Korberg or Rhydian too.
I know no one will read this, but I'm still drawn to say, this rings in my heart as my country prepares for the most significant vote perhaps in the entire history of our young representative democracy. May the Lord himself and the Holy Spirit guide our decision.
but that's the cool thing about this song. it doesn't need to pertain to russia in particular. it can relate to anyone who has the same feelings about their country. it can be taken out of context (like right now) and let anyone make their own meaning out of it
I love this song because to me, it is NOT a nationalist song, despite appearances. In fact, it arguably is anything but! As the lyrics say, "She is eternal. Long before nations' lines were drawn, when no flags flew when no armies stood my land was born." What he loves existed before any national borders were created, and, it is implied, before any human being even lived in what is now Russia. What he loves is not a nation, not the Soviet Union or the Russian Empire or the United States of America for that matter. It's not a system of government or a leader. What he loves is the COUNTRY of Russia, the land that existed long before humanity even had imagined the name Rus.
David Carroll. Holy shit, what more can I say. What a hauntingly beautiful song and voice, always gives me goosebumps when I hear it. I just wish that Carroll was still here and his life wasn’t cut so short by AIDS.
one of the most beautiful and powerful songs in history, performed flawlessly... being a bass i will never be able to truly perform it, but for THIS song i'll forgive the Tenors ( that was in fact a joke)
Friends, have any of you seen this? Look for "CHESS "Anthem" 1988 original Broadway cast, David Carroll". You'll have to forgive the vid's quality but the audio is faultless :) Enjoy!
"Let mans' petty nations tear themselves apart; My land's only borders lie around my heart!" Those words could apply to any nation loved by any citizen........this is my favorite version of this song and I apply it to THIS nation....this land of Liberty.
@thecommentor14595 ......OK, maybe one of the three geniuses can tell me what the point IS !?!? MY point is that anyone who truly loves his/her country would feel the same and no matter where he/she traveled, his/her homeland would remain dearest in his/her heart. ( kind of like Dorothy in the Wizzard of Oz when she clicked the heels of the ruby slippers together and said "There's NO PLACE LIKE HOME....."! ) It is a beautiful song and the singes has a beautiful voice, just enjoy it !
i love this song so much that when my printer was broke (meaning i couldnt print out the sheet music) i spent 3 hours transcribing it from screen to manuscript :)
the amount of views for this video saddens me... why is it that this has so few people watch it, and pointless videos like that stupid staring hamster thing have millions... this mans voice was a blessing, that can now only be heard on the precious few recordings available... he deserves better.
@thecommentor14595 Yes, I've seen 'Chess'. I understand your interpretation of the song in the context of the play...........I simply expanded on it. It REALLY is NOT something to get excited about!!!
This is most definitely David Carroll. He sounds nothing like Tommy Korberg although Korberg's version is beautiful. But his voice lacks the small nuances that David has in his. It is identical to the other video that shows David singing the last line. Look it up.
This is definitely David Carrol and NOT Tommy Körberg. I am from Sweden and very used to hear Tommy. Their voices remiss if each other but the difference is quite big
Yes Tommys voice is also quite nasal but it is very different. His voice is more soft and he does not pronounce the words in the heavy american dialect this man does, eapecially not the hard "R". With that said i love this version too but as a Swede i will always love Tommys original version best.
i think this one has less views because there is another vid of this song that has josh groban singing it... the fact that it is actual video makes it a more popular choice
Disagree. London cast performance was terrific, but it was sung more like a pop song. Here, it's a theater piece, and David Carroll had a legit, highly trained voice with a beautiful tone. Both versions are excellent, but, as I said in another comment, I consider this the _definitive_ performance.
There's always someone out there who's sadden by the average and idiocy of majority of population. I understand it, but I can't sympathize. Let them have and indulge in their bullshit. I'm glad they never find jewels precious like this. In judgmental nature of my ego, I enjoy being better than them.
THIS IS NOT DAVID CARROL!! .... This is the original "Russian" who's singing, Tommy Körberg .... and NO ONE can sing this tune with the same emotion and passion as him!! ..... in my opinion ..... :) :) :)
You're absolutely & completely wrong. This is definitely David Carroll from the Original Broadway Cast Recording of CHESS. David's voice is so unique and utterly perfect that it's impossible to confuse it with another. Listen to his rendition of "Love Can't Happen" featured (David Carroll passed away before the full recording was made) on the Grand Hotel Broadway Cast Recording. His last note is something to cherish forever
I choke up most every time I listen to this. Great song and performance by David Carroll, who unfortunately passed in 1992 at the age of 41. RIP
I just discovered this and am just truly moved to tears each time I listen. I've heard the song many times by others, but David's voice...moves mountains!! Truly gifted and talented and a huge tragedy with his passing. Huge!!
It is 2021, and David Carroll's brilliant voice lives on. Thrilling.
March 11, 1992
Six guys singing the same song at a Les Mis audition brought ME here.
James Bond Yeah. I'm actually glad you saw my post. I would DEFINITELY recommend you go with something else because I was NOT joking.
Only 6? 😂

Darren Zieger holy shit! You did a musical with Raul fucking Esparza? At age 17?!?!?!?!?!?!? Goddammit, you lucky son of a bitch.
Raul ain't bad...but David just blew me away with his amazing voice on this. Makes me wish I could have seen him perform live before he passed away.
He's also played The Arbiter in the 2003 Broadway Benefit Concert with Josh Groban(Anatoly), Adam Pascal(Freddie), Julia Munery(Florence), Sutton Foster(Svetlana), and Norm Lewis(Molokov)!

This performance features David Carroll singing this beautiful song and you barely said a thing about his outstanding dinging!!
Oh my god, what a story! The fact that you were able to see Raul as a teenaged kid doing that is amazing!
Heck, I can still hold those 11 seconds! Definitely the best performance EVER!
Thank you for posting this. This man, David Carroll, had a most glorious voice. This is one of my most cherished recordings ever, and for a long time I could not find it anywhere. Listening to this in 2023
I had tickets to see this on Broadway but it closed before the date on my tickets. A letter went out to ticket holders asking if they wanted to come in before the closing but by the time i made the call it was all sold out/fully booked.

Goosebumps, especially on the high G at "where would I start?", what a glorious talent.
Yes, David Carroll, what a glorious talent.
Immortal Classic!!!!RIP David Carroll!!!!Oh how we miss You!!!! This Is The Best PERIOD. I listened to this all of the week of September 11-2001
Tommy sang it significantly better - after all it was written for him
An actor who's touring with Paw Patrol Live spoke to my chorus class today. He sang this song for us. It was amazing.
He did deserve better, but sadly it is only his memory we can now serve, as this incomparable talent collapsed and died while working on "Grand Hotel", March13, 1992. He was only 41. Still the only ONE!!!!-David Carroll is ETERNALLY missed-R.I.P you and your brilliant voice!!!!
David Carroll-!!!!-2018!!!!- you are remembered and cherished-never forgotten!!!!-we are still here now!!!!
2023
We love Chess, and this is one of our favorites. His voice is incredible, as is this song.
If this could be made a GLOBAL national anthem, maybe there'd be peace :D
Unfortunately, as long as there is Kim Jong Il and other socialist leaders, that will not be possible.
That last note is just an immortal true soul breaker/heart breaker!!!!
I LOVE this song!
So moving!
I so wish this original Broadway cast recording was in print on CD or available as an MP3 album! I don't understand why it hasn't been reissued in recent years.
Superb rendition
This song almost brings tears to my eyes.
Gives me shivers... This is amazing.
I'm so glad my director is doing this show for the thespians. i feel like this show is an honor to be a part of and that the music needs to be known more. few people can sing as amazing as this man.
David Carroll ! My favorite version of this song
Sorry Josh Grobin-Sorry ABBA-There Was Only One-THIS is it!!!!
Sorry ABBA? Why? ABBA never sang this song. But who do you think has composed this? Yes, Björn and Benny, so you should better thank them for this song because without them it wouldn't exist.
Harry Bright was a victim of this self plagiarization!
best call for peace, along with Do You Hear The People Sing reprise. Makes me cry every time...so moving
Listen to Kerry Ellis sing this accompanied by Brian May on guitar and a full symphony orchestra in 2010 --also amazing!
"Collabro" brought me here. They sound fantastic.
+Margie Clark listen to Solala's version! either on spotify or the live version here on youtube!
+Margie Clark same - Collabro and Josh Groban
Goosebumps

I read it
What country?
He didn’t listen😢
God and the Holy Spirit have NOTHING to do with it. (They are NOT REAL). It will be PEOPLE who decide the future of democracy! VOTE BLUE
Chess. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
Beautiful
This beautiful man had such an amazing voice and he was taken way too soon
but that's the cool thing about this song. it doesn't need to pertain to russia in particular. it can relate to anyone who has the same feelings about their country. it can be taken out of context (like right now) and let anyone make their own meaning out of it
Rest in peace Mr Carroll
Even thinking about this song reduces me to tears.
Definitely David.
Stunning. What a tragic loss ...
I love this song because to me, it is NOT a nationalist song, despite appearances. In fact, it arguably is anything but!

Baritones, whose voice ranges up to the tenor level, can sing this song with ease!
Cat ... This is a baritone song/role!
@bonsmom have you ever seen chess! think about this song in terms of the context it is intended! its ridiculous to compare it to the US!
I have to preform this for my vocal tech class... 🙃
amazing ... now i found my new audition song :)
What a amazing song.. I wish this was a world anthem.. It speaks so much and is so true.. GOD BLESS AMERICA!
Friends, have any of you seen this? Look for "CHESS "Anthem" 1988 original Broadway cast, David Carroll". You'll have to forgive the vid's quality but the audio is faultless :) Enjoy!
"Let mans' petty nations tear themselves apart; My land's only borders lie around my heart!"
Those words could apply to any nation loved by any citizen........this is my favorite version of this song and I apply it to THIS nation....this land of Liberty.
That song evokes the extreme love of that famous international Russian chess champion for his love for his country, after defecting to the West.
@thecommentor14595 ......OK, maybe one of the three geniuses can tell me what the point IS !?!?
MY point is that anyone who truly loves his/her country would feel the same and no matter where he/she traveled, his/her homeland would remain dearest in his/her heart. It essays the life story of a Russian chess player who defected to the West!
Jai sang this song with superb emotion!
I'd sing this song soo well✌🏻️
Georgia Belmont you should!!
i love this song so much that when my printer was broke (meaning i couldnt print out the sheet music) i spent 3 hours transcribing it from screen to manuscript :)
"Madrugá Macarena" brought me here
Can’t wait for Tommy Johanssons version
@thephantom3194 I completly agree. this song was introduced to me by my choir teacher and I love it. It is a shame it has this little views
the amount of views for this video saddens me... why is it that this has so few people watch it, and pointless videos like that stupid staring hamster thing have millions... this mans voice was a blessing, that can now only be heard on the precious few recordings available... he deserves better.
@thecommentor14595 Yes, I've seen 'Chess'. I understand your interpretation of the song in the context of the play...........I simply expanded on it.
It REALLY is NOT something to get excited about!!!
Unless you are feeling nostalgic and longs to go home to your own country after defecting to some foreign country.
This is most definitely David Carroll. He sounds nothing like Tommy Korberg although Korberg's version is beautiful. But his voice lacks the small nuances that David has in his. It is identical to the other video that shows David singing the last line. Look it up.

Dr. Bill Adams thought me this song.
Definitely David and not Tommy. Tommy says his "cross" with kind of an "h" at the end of it
It's Tommys underbite that brings the "sh"-ness to his S:es.
@@Fnoffen - performed by David Carroll (1950-1992)
Look at the description it says David
close your eyes and listen and I guarantee you will get goosebumps
my choir is singing this for our concert next week
lol
I guess it all comes down to opinion when it comes to Anthem. Personally, I prefer This version. But I respect Korgberg and mcdowall as well.
David Carroll, who is performing this died several years after this.
Tommy K is the best
is a abba instrumental song!!!
No. It is a singing group from Sweden whose first names are Anna, Ben, Bjorn, Agnetha. Thus, ABBA.
ABBA's only instrumental songs were Arrival and Intermezzo No. 1. Though this here was composed by Björn and Benny but it has nothing to do with ABBA.
i think this one has less views because there is another vid of this song that has josh groban singing it... the fact that it is actual video makes it a more popular choice
@Planxty Really???
Perhaps you can enlighten me...........?
@thephantom3194
Don't ya know why's that? Some music pieces are for elite. And elite is always in minority.
@thephantom3194 Low views because Tommy Körberg sang this song a hundred times better 30 years ago.
Many have performed this well, but to me none come close to David Carroll.
@bonsmom yep!! you've missed the point of the song!! Definately!
Unfortunately thephantom3194, this is the state of our country. There's no knowledge of taste anymore.
I remember when Nick Metzger was so best in chess.
5 peoples borders dont lie around their heart! he he he xd lol rofl
Great song...but the unequivically best version I've heard of this is by Jai McDowall on Britain's Got Talent. He was simply unbelievable.
Where the judges got teary eyed!
Listen to the London version. Way better

In judgmental nature of my ego, I enjoy being better than them.
Nice performance. However, Josh Groban's really does something to me that is unique.
+François Bessing I like them equally. One basic difference between them is that Josh is a baritone, while David sounds more like a tenor.
You know this is a song sung by a "Russian" right??
because the London version is way Superior. I don't like what they did to the B-way version
THIS IS NOT DAVID CARROL!! .... This is the original "Russian" who's singing, Tommy Körberg .... and NO ONE can sing this tune with the same emotion and passion as him!! ..... in my opinion ..... :) :) :)
