Some of those portraits were nice!
28mm is an interesting one, it's got some very unique characteristics as a field of view. It's got the same field of view as the iPhone, which makes a lot of sense to me because like 'getting a lot in' is something desirable from the majority of casual shooting, but 28mm isn't so wide as to present the challenges of shooting an ultra wide lens like 20mm downwards, where you've never close enough to your subjects, you've got to get really close and take advantage of the perspective distortion etc.
With a 28mm, it's often a bit too long, or a bit too wide. But then if you use it well it can be incredibly versatile, providing just a touch more framing than a 24mm and a little more room than a 35. It feels kind of the widest lens possible which still maintains a field of view which is 'normal'

Where in the American South are you heading? The Blue Ridge Parkway to Asheville NC is beautiful, and if you do a serious road trip, taking I-40 west all the way to Albuquerque NM, with side-trips away from the Interstate to the small towns will net you fantastic barbecue, grasslands, desert, Route 66, canyons, and get you close to Death Valley and the Sierra Nevada mountains along Hiway 395. If you can do a bit of day hiking (12-15 miles), places like Mount Whitney, Kearsarge Pass, White Mountains, and Yosemite are all along it. Life-changing vistas if you can swing it.

Check out the M8. It totally changed my attitude towards shooting digital. The B&W are pretty darn close to film like and the colors straight out of camera JPGs are great. It will mess up your standard focal lengths to slightly longer though. 28mm being 35mm and so forth. Picked mine up for US $1k.

I know what you mean about the 28mm... I was using a 40mm and THOUGHT i wanted a 28 for my everyday carry, but once i started using it, all my pictures were less interesting, bland somehow. 35-40 is way better for street.

We all work differently. But it always amazes med that analog shooters complain about the time of editing and deleting frames after a photo shoot, when they try to go digital. First of all, you could just think film when shooting digital, rather than just press the shutter all the time. Put tape on the screen if you want. Second, what about the time with developing film, scanning negatives, remove dust spots and final digital editing? Most of the analog shooters I know, use a lot more time to create the final image, than if they did shoot digital images. Analog is nice, and I fully understand the concept of working slow and use the time that is needed. I did analog photographing for 25 years, so I know what it is. But the complain about the digital workflow, the time of editing and the too many images when you come home, I don't understand.

Nice video - I am with you on the 28mm, I love 35mm, but more because of flexibility.
I am not with you on the M10 files, if you think the DNG's are flat, try a few other digital cameras. i recently had hands on with the M10, and the files out of camera didn't need masses of work to get publishable. I shot about 100 shots, and processed the useable ones in about fifteen to twenty minutes, and only went back on two of them to tweak further (because my editor told me too.. lol).
Anyway if I ever have the cash spare, an M10, and a 35mm Summicron are a perfect match.

  • @jackthehatphoto

Hi George, if you ever get chance to shoot with a Leica MD you should try it. It's the closest film-like experience a digital camera can offer. No LCD screen or menus to distract you. Just a pure shooting experience like the M6. My friend has one and loves it. I still have my M6 :-)

  • @BuzzLiteBeer
    @BuzzLiteBeer 5 років тому +1

Sure, the upfront cost of digital is higher (~1.5k for a Sony A7III or Fuji X-T3 or any other mid-range mirrorless), but shooting film can add up (cost of film, development, and time). Also, people who end up buying a Mamiya 6 or Hasselblad 500cm are throwing about 1.5k anyways.
I personally shoot film because photography is a hobby for me and it's more enjoyable and fun to shoot film. For professional work, I think film is largely a niche service and not even close to being able to handle modern professional demands.

Great video and I really thought the shots through the plastic strips were excellent. Digital is definitely more work in post and takes some practice to get fast at editing and color grading. Film does all that for you so I can see the appeal. Spending time looking at the screen is because you were new to the M10 and not confident with it yet. You know you don’t have to check your screen if you don’t want to. If you had shot with a 50mm or 35mm you probably would have gotten more usable shots so don’t blame digital for that. Just think if you would have shot film with a wide angle for the first time. You would have wasted lots of film, chemicals and time.

You could try one of the digital M's that don't have an LCD on the back. To a "normal" person, I'm sure that sounds ridiculous, but to a film shooter, it seems to make some amount of sense. Sometimes I think if I get a digital M, I'd go with one of those, but I can't afford any digital M right now...

I looove this! I recently found your channel and I am honestly obsessed, I have literally watched every video haha. :) I've been into shooting film for a while but recently it all got a bit more serious and I want to invest in a scanner who can scan negatives but just things like drawings as well. I got my eyes on the Canoscan 9000F mark II, and just a little question; are there any people who have it and recommend it? There are so many mixed reviews on the internet and even though I'm pretty sure I would love to hear some people about it. So if anyone has it, please let me know! And again, lovely video and I love love love your whole channel. Simply amazing!

you might wanna check this lovely site:
      www.filmscanner.info/en/FilmscannerTestberichte.html
I have a 9000F ii and I'm okay with the results, nothing to write home about, but decent enough for insta if you're willing to spend the time to figure it out, on the other hand I'm really itching for more quality and better resolution now, which a proper film scanner can give you, for example a nikon coolscan puts out an efective resolution of 3900ppi, where as the canon 9000f ii even if scanned at 4800ppi only gives you effective resolution of only 1700ppi.
then again, the nikon scanner is the cost of a car, but alternatives like a reflecta rps 10 can put out effective resolution of up to 4300ppi.
so as you can see, the field of scanners is brought and you have to calculate your budget with what your exactly scanning to find the best suitable one. also dont forget to get an IT-8 chart to properly calibrate your new scanning device. have fun scanning :)

I have a Pakon f135+ for 35mm, it's amazing. Not super high-res but colour is excellent. Flatbeds are ok for medium format but terrible for 35mm, shadows just turn to mush. In saying that if you have to go a flatbed for budget reasons try to stretch for an Epson over the canon.
