My wife and I pay thousands of dollars to our power company each winter. We are in southern ohio. It can go from the high 90's in the summer to 0 in the winter.
I can partially answer the question. The reason is that people will try to find anything they use for price gouging on any issue that comes up! We live in an evil system that is operated by the devil and people seem to follow that way of thinking to get ahead no matter what it takes even at the expense of other people's suffering!
TIME LINE 1:08......RESULTS IN HIGHER BILLS? That is what it is all about! MONEY....GREED. " For the love of money is the root of all evil ". And this is only the beginning of sorrows.
So since the whole system is so private and unregulated.. Those companies could do what corporations normally do as soon as they lose money they go bankruptcy and who's going to run the generators? 🤷🏻♂️ Who knows..
If you plan to continue to live in Texas you better start saving 6-10K dollars to build your home with your own Solar and Battery system the way this is looking I can see another crisis when this companies start abandoning the ship because profit is not at 200% as they like it.
@@geogmz8277 In general you should not be totally dependent on government/corporations. Putting all trust in these entities leaves you very vulnerable so yes generators, solar panels and batteries are things everyone should have.
The new green deal just gotten it's first biggest test when you go to windpower and solar system in Texas when you shut down Nuclear power plant and coal plants people have no power to stay warm.
There's one guy who vblogs about his career after moving to Texas from California. He was talking one time about how there are multiple power companies to chose from. His power bill was quite low. Under $50 a month. That is low considering how AC is needed so much in Texas. I have solar panels which is how my power bill is lower but my rates are definitely higher than his rates.
It seems like getting a solar system installed down there would be cheaper than a $7,000 per month electric bill. Tesla power wall? Geo thermal for new constriction? Insulate homes as this helps keep cool air and warm air in.
This is what happens when you deregulate a public service like electricity or gas. The energy producers cause the low supply because they won’t invest in cold weather packages for their power plants and out of Texan stubbornness they won’t connect to the national grids so they could import or export power. So after the Texan monopoly causes a shortage they then charge exorbitant rates, 300 times more than anyone else pays in the country. The power didn’t get more expensive to produce, its coming from the same plants. There’s a reason the rest of the country doesn’t have variable rates and rates are approved that are based on the cost to produce the power plus a reasonable profit. At $9 a kilowatt hour, cooking a Turkey for 6 hours in a 2000 watt oven would cost $108 vs the normal price of $1.20 at 10 cents a Kilowatt hour.
So the system in California that turns off power every time the wind blows hard is Democrat controlled right? How do you explain that? You know since this is a greedy Republican thing.

Man imagine if there was some government oversight that could keep these companies from price gouging at a time like this. But im sure texans would rather pay higher rates than get some government intervention.
Texans pay the lowest rates in the country when you adjust for the distances that the electricity is transmitted. They don't need any government intervention (btw: Texas produces more than twice as much energy as the next highest energy producing state - they are somewhat expert at this).
When i was growing up we didnt have electricity until i was 11. We never went cold we never went hungry and had a supply of water at all times. It wasn't as convenient as having electricity, but it worked. People grow too dependent on things that can easily fail. Then do not know how to survive without it.
@@speedy01247 I agree. But if it does fail we definitely need a backup so stuff like this doesn't happen. There is too much dependency on it without any advances in upgrading it to prevent the failures. This shows how weak we can be. Something as small as bad weather can cripple such a large area. It is actually scary.
Shhh the average Republican doesn't understand the big scary word regulation is just another word for rules. Maybe some day they'll actually learn that you can't have civilization without rules.
Some of the commenters here don't seem to understand - he is talking about service providers, NOT the power companies. These smaller businesses buy electric from the generating companies and resell to consumers, usually at a fixed rate. When energy costs skyrocket they can't pass it on because of the contract with the end user. If they don't have assets in reserve, they will be bankrupted. If you signed on to a variable rate, instead of fixed, the higher cost gets passed on to you. It would be nice if he clarified - which providers, please, so we can prepare. I really hate surprises.

Yes. El Paso spent the several million to winterize their power system. It was their reaction tp a big storm with similar results back in 2015. With the current situation they had a blackout for several minutes for about 50k costumers. El Paso isn't part of the Texas power grid but is part of the Western Region power grid so that may account for the power coming back on. My local utility company here in California had asked customers to cut back the thermostats if possible so excess power can be sent to Texas which means only El Paso.

No one is going to pay thousands of dollars to their electric companies.
If there is a new trend of weather conditions from the north pole Texas will have other types of problems with their housing. Texas is used to low insulation in homes because normally the weather is warm so having more insulation in the homes would create more heat but, if freezing weather conditions in the winter are on a new trend these homes would have to be better insulated! In the summertime, it would be much hotter inside of their homes due to more insulation. It would be better to use more air-conditioning units to keep your home cooler in the summertime than to fight an issue with frozen conditions attacking your homes in the wintertime which could be a catastrophe that would cost billions of dollars in frozen damages to people's homes! People, times, and conditions are changing. People will have to change right along with them!

Under $50 a month. That is low considering how AC is needed so much in Texas. I have solar panels which is how my power bill is lower but my rates are definitely higher than his rates.

I am too in Dallas tx. Landlord asked me to pay this month bill. I'm not able to. I'm waiting for Rental assistance to pay for that
This is what happens when you deregulate a public service like electricity or gas.

Texas is the only state in the continental United States with an independent and isolated grid. That allows the state to avoid federal regulation - but also severely limits its ability to draw emergency power from other grids.
