I return to your videos from time to time. While I deeply enjoy and admire your art, I just love listening to your thoughts and see you create and think. And your pleasant, friendly voice. I am so happy that you are so successful and recognized and allow us to have insight into your process. Thank you!
This is sad I just come across your channel, this is your last upload. I really appreciate your pieces so hard, hardly enough I feel so inspired with growing my skills just like yours cause I got all the time at this juncture. I'm only 14 so I'm at the phase of falling and with falling I include loving your channel madly enough I want it to be a part of my journey
Again, one of your videos has snapped me out of a lazy artist slump. I've been painting for projects all week and woke up tired this morning and thought, "Maybe I'll just take a break and play video games or something." After watching this, I think I'll do a study :D
Youre a HUGE inspiration for me and reason I got into oils! I had never considered the medium after some bad artists relationships but through our videos I'd never felt so compelled to make an oil piece. And ever since then I've been painting with the medium for about 3 years now and I love it. Now I'm finding myself back at your channel and remembering that, I just wanted to say thank you! And I really hope you make more videos soon, I adore our work I've never had an artist inspire me so much
I just found your channel and I'm utterly in love with your art, and the way you articulate things. I saw you're teaching at the IMC this year and I'd literally give anything to go but I have an extremely important wedding to attend that weekend. I will eagerly await more videos and hopefully future opportunities to learn from you. You're awesome!
Just for anyone wondering she is now an art director for magic the gathering, and she seems to have been the art director for all the magic artist I follow.
It's true- I've been art directing Magic for a few years, just never brought it up here to keep the conversation focused on painting. Eldraine is also why I had to pause on making videos.
Dear Cynthia, thank you for you beautiful channel that I still cannot get enough of! I like the whole structure, the pacing, everything is very tastefully executed and authentic , and most of all I enjoy your focus, artistic growth-your channel is my dearest companion on my artistic journey - so thank you for your time and effort you've put into this. Enjoy your coffee!
your videos really get me in the mood to paint even in the middle of a stump, so thank you so much for the inspiring, positive and creative vibes! and of course, beautiful art.
I quite liked that notion of learning how to self critique/what questions to ask - I would love a video on that when you next make one. Thanks as always for the video, and enjoy that coffee!
I hated traditional painting because it’s messy and there’s no undo function but since I stumbled onto your videos I’m so hyped to try it. You shall not hide your skill before the world. Pls come back! I miss you like I miss sunny summer days in this grumpy winter.
Hello Cynthia. Just passed by to say that i find your videos very inspirational. Definitely one of the best art channels on youtube. A little curiosity, when does the next video come out?
I love all of your videos they're so calming to watch too, I'd love a video on skin tones. I struggle with saturation and shadows personally. You've also inspired me to take my own reference photos which really helps and i got back into using liquin after using walnut oil for so long.
Hi, Cynthia. I discovered your channel checking Magic and D&D artists. Thanks for all these amazing videos and advices. I'm struggling with a lack of inspiration period in my work and I just want to say that this channel is like an oasis right now. Hope to see more videos soon. Thanks again and greetings from Spain.
your videos have become almost like a ritual for me every time i’m working on my own art. you provide so much insight into interesting topics and give a lot of good technical advice yet at the same time the vibe of the videos is nice and casual. thank you so much for your hard work, i’ll be eagerly waiting for your next video! :)
Thanks so much, ta ra! I'm looking forward to releasing more, things just got crazy with work and other priorities. I sincerely appreciate the encouragement.
Your videos are so cool, interesting and helpful thank you so much ! I'd also really love to see a little bit more of your illustration process and approach in some videos (as you did in the alice piece) even if seeing traditionnal stuff is always refreshing i believe 😊
Thank you! I plan on doing more digital stuff soon- the recent Windows 10 update that messed with tablet styluses got the better of a recent recording, but it's since been patched, so I'll try again. :)
Yeah I have some problems too since the update... But anyway, I have a question for you and I would very interested about your opinion (I will try to formulate it clearly I'm from france and my english is sometimes not very accurate ). I'd like to have your thoughts about a certain period of the life of a young artist when you are not a beginner anymore and aiming to become a professional but you are not quite there yet. What do you think are the most important things in terms of learning, organization( schedule, etc...) and state of mind during this stage ? Thanks again ! :)
Liquin is cool. It's an alkyd resin medium with fast drying time, but I'm not in a rush when I'm painting so I like to experiment with my own recipes for the mediums I use. I usually make different combinations of stand oil, sun-thicken linseed oil, venice turp, oil of spike, dammar etc, and they all give interesting results. One downside it's the drying time which can take a long time, but if I need faster drying times I play with black oil or cobalt siccative. This is purely optional and you can get very interesting effects using these mediums, but I find the whole process a lot of fun and interesting.
OMG, You left me speechless, you hit the spot with my actual situation, thank you for all your videos Cynthiha, you're truly a great inspiration, and again, thanks for the tips and advice, reaaaaally helped me out with my thoughts. :') Keep it up!!
Hey, Cynthia! New viewer here. I love your voice, it’s so relaxing. Also, interesting conversation about thumbnails. I can’t wait to watch your other videos!
Thank you for these treasures! :) If I could have a suggestion for a next video, I'd be very interested in hearing about portraits in fantasy illustration. How to use references but paint new, imaginary faces:) Thanks!
It's 2021 now and it's very sad that she didn't came back please. After 3 years (almost) we still here and hoping that you come back with you incredibly beautiful art...
Hey Cynthia, how do you achieve such natural looking palettes in your digital paintings? Mine always lean towards too garish or too muddy and washed out. Love the videos! Keep them coming!!!!!
Hey, Cynthia! Just wanted to thank you for inspiration. And also I really hope that I'll get the chance to work with you some day. Cheers and have a good day.
Hi Cynthia, that big easel was intriguing. What's the largest size painting you've ever worked on? Do you have to think about anything differently when you go big? I've found it difficult to work at different scales (bigger or smaller), especially when painting figures. Thanks for sharing your videos!
Good question! I think the largest piece I've done in recent memory was 24 x 36 inches. I've never worked very large due to space constraints, since most of my work spaces for the past 20 years have been small bedrooms or side-rooms in apartments. There are certainly some differences in frequency of detail to consider that don't translate 1:1 between sizes. For example, if I just scaled up the size of my brushes and used the same number or density of brushstrokes on a face at a much bigger size, it might look unfinished. There's also a big difference between suggestion and tight rendering, and that's probably worth a demo in itself at some point.
The continuum between "unfinished" and "over-rendered" is something I grapple with all the time. A demo about that would be amazing! To me, it feels like a weird intersection of my perception of the subject filtered through the size of the rendering and the texture of the surface. I've mostly worked around 18 x 24 inches, and lately I've felt my compositions have been a little cramped. Maybe I'll try stepping up in size in gradual increments just to get a feel for it. Thanks!
Are you a mermaid? This voice is so enchanting that it sounds like an evil song in which you can not resist watching the video until the end. Btw. Excellent painting and advice, thank you for being adding knowledge to people, you have a true artist spirit.
I just found you via Minnie Small's shout out. I hope that we'll be seeing more videos from you soon! (although now that I post, I can understand how much time video editing eats up).
still coming back to watch your videos again from time to time. especially one with skethes. really love your drawings. hope u doing fine and will come back one day
Hi Cynthia! I'm kind of a young aspiring artist, and I draw and paint for the love of it. However, I'd like to start taking my work more seriously. What kind of advice do you have for someone who is self-taught and wants to develop their technique?
Great study and calm voice in the video. I think having a study is really excellent idea to scale up to a larger painting. I know I personally massively struggled with a sky scene in a massive painting because I wasn't super familiar with this type of landscape. Definitely, scaling up or doing a lot of smaller practice paintings is a better way to work and learn. If you have sometime, I would appreciate feedback on any of my painting demos. Thanks!
I love your vids. I just came back here excited cause I saw you posted paintings on Instagram but here I am and to my despair there’s no painting process video ;(
hey cynthia! i have a question: what do you do when you have things you'd like to draw or paint and have gathered a ton of reference and all that jazz but cant seem to make it work on paper?
Hello! Thank you so much for your insightful videos, I always look forward to seeing them. I have a question regarding style versus the work you want to do as a career. What do you do if you feel your voice or your art style doesn't exactly "fit" the style of your goal job or career? For example, a lot of fantasy illustration for tabletop gaming tend to be artists that are highly realistic. Say one's style is close, but maybe rather than being 100% realism, the art is more semi-realistic with a stylized slant. Should you conform to what the other artists in the field are doing and convert to realism, or should you try to stay true to your voice and bring something different to the table? How likely would a semi-realistic artist be to get a job for a company known for their highly realistic artists?
I can feel your love to Liquin Cynthia!! :D , It would be very blissful if you can share some information about amount of Liquin you use with thinner at different layers of the painting.... Namaskarrrr
Hey cynthia ur work is amazing. I want to ask you that i often fail to complete my work and move on to new works. How do i become more competant in this?
Another fantastic and inspiring video! I truly enjoy seeing the little notification when you upload! I also have a question that has been nagging me for a long time: How do you start enjoying the process and subject matter of your work? Also, tied directly with the subject matter part, how do you find your unique way of interpreting themes or your own artistic voice? I always get so bogged down on the particulars of making the narrative work, composition serving the piece etc. that the entire process starts to feel like a chore and I get very detached from my work and initial idea.
Your videos always get me out of what ever funk I’m in. I wanted to ask you if you think studying anatomy if absolutely necessary or can you gather good reference and follow the shapes that way? I’m wondering especially for someone who wants to make more fantasy like art.
Why do I get periods where I can paint and enjoy it and feel inspired, but I have many more periods where I dislike my work, feel unmotivated and uninspired. The last time I felt I truly enjoyed painting each day was during art school. I get wrapped up looking for inspiration, I'd join a class but I suffer from a certain type of arthritis & have not learned to drive yet, So my pain meds & pain makes things harder. But I've got to get working & treating my work as a full-time job, Hoping to sell work for. PS those hardboards are perfect for studies. I'd love to have your talent in both Photoshop & your studies in paint. Photoshop seems like a great way of sketching ideas down, but id have to learn to use P.S. Love to see your large work too. Is a lot of your work done by imagination? I love it.
I think your work is very inspiring and your videos always make my day! But have you considered uploading the music you use in your videos somewhere? Like soundcloud or youtube, I'd love to hear more. There is just something in it that makes me very relaxed and calm.
KENNETH WETHERBEE certainly not concerned with practice paintings, but I have seen the studies and I do wonder if it'd have a significant impact on finished work after I'm gone.
Hey Cynthia! Do you think professional artists always must have a sort of formal education? (For example Fine Arts university, arts college etc.) Thanks for your time ^.^

I love your art and your painting process Cynthia! Thank you.
Awesome chat, and it's great to see your process too. Thanks!
I missed you Cynthia! Thank you for another wonderful process video and for answering those questions! I can't wait to see this big painting.
It is so nice to hear how bright and optimistic you always sound. This IN ADDITION TO a fantastic art lesson.
Going through these videos is really helping me with my art slump in quarantine

I really look forward to your new videos! Thank you!
just found this channel, 3 years without posts ? will you come back ? =) your videos are amazing
I had never considered sketching out a painting like this before painting it. Thanks for the inspiration!
Lovely!
I love the concept behind this piece. Wow amazing job

Hey Cynthia!!! Love your work and your studio! could you make a study of a character with horns?
Are you a mermaid?
This voice is so enchanting that it sounds like an evil song in which you can not resist watching the video until the end.
Btw. Excellent painting and advice, thank you for being adding knowledge to people, you have a true artist spirit.
I wish I was a mermaid! Except for the whole not being able to walk on land thing, I guess... thanks for the kind words.
Such a wonderful study ! Would you or have you ever done a show with just studies? If not what do you usually do with all your studies?
I just found you via Minnie Small's shout out. I hope that we'll be seeing more videos from you soon! (although now that I post, I can understand how much time video editing eats up).
Wow gorgeous work! Do you have any advice for someone whose goal is to someday work at Wizards or have them as a client?
still coming back to watch your videos again from time to time. especially one with skethes. really love your drawings. hope u doing fine and will come back one day

Thanks. Been seeing quite a bit about the lack of permanence of alizarin crimson. Aren't you concerned about it fading?
KENNETH WETHERBEE certainly not concerned with practice paintings, but I have seen the studies and I do wonder if it'd have a significant impact on finished work after I'm gone.
Are you coming back? I hope so! I'm sure you are way too busy though, but wanted to let you know you are missed.
Hey Cynthia! Do you think professional artists always must have a sort of formal education? (For example Fine Arts university, arts college etc.) Thanks for your time ^.^
Βικτώρια Κανελλοπούλου not always! There are many forms of art education outside of traditional school.
Are you okay Cynthia? It's been a long time since I last see you posting art on the internet, you are very inspiring to me. I hope you r doing well, stay safe during quarantine!
Cynthia we miss your reassuring voice and wisdom!
miss your videos!!
❤️
Hi, are you going to make any more videos? Please keep sharing with us people across the other side of the world who can't meet you!
I have a question: can you tell us how is it to be an art director? ^^
I really enjoy listening to you while drawing! :D
Have a nice day! - Matthew

I need new videos, please come back!!
Are you ever planning on coming back🥺
*patiently waiting for new contents from Cynthia*
Hi Cynthia. I understand you are a Senior Art Director for Wizards of the Coast, and I can imagine how that consists of a busy schedule. That said, I hope all is well, and that we get to see some new images in the near future.
Come back !!! We love you
Have you ever done artwork for Magic The Gathering cards? I think you would be fantastic :-). We miss u, come back!
Been painting magic cards since 2010, and I've been art directing Magic for four years. That's what got me busy back in April. :O cheers!

Ahh I knew it! Which ones? The art is fantastic, we have been players for years :-)
It would be amazing if you could show some of your MTG artwork in your channel ☺️😘
Hope all is well with you. We miss you.
I said it a year ago. Shit, I’m going to keep saying to. WE 👏 NEED 👏 MORE 👏 VIDEOS
