    Lyrics
There's a solitary man crying, hold me
    It's only because he's a-lonely
If the keeper of time runs slowly
He won't be alive for long!
If he only had time to tell of all of the things he planned
With a card up his sleeve, what would he achieve?
    It means nothing!
To the opium den and the barroom gin
In the Belmont chair playing violins
The gambler's face cracks into a grin
As he lays down the king of spades
    But the dealer just stares
There's something wrong here, he thinks
The gambler is seized and forced to his knees
    And shot dead
    He only wanted more time
    Away from the darkest door
But his luck it gave in
As the dawn light crept in
And he lay on the floor
From the Hundred Year War to the Crimea
With a lance and a musket and a Roman spear
To all of the men who have stood with no fear
In the service of the King
Before you met your fate be sure you
    Did not forsake your lover
    May not be around anymore
There's a solitary man crying, hold me
    It's only because he's a-lonely
If the keeper of time runs slowly
He won't be alive for long!

I'm 42 and 'discovered' the Clash last year. Only knew a couple of hits, but never paid attention to their discography. And now: stole the musical room in my heart. With a big kaboom they entered. Every decade has it's gems. That's why I love music and want to be open to all kinds of music, despite the age or style. London Calling is now an important piece in my album collection. Very versatile album.

Fck The beatles m8, sang about relationships n girls that didn't even exist, totally commercial to make the £. Yesterday didn't even happen, Yesterday was actually one of last words added. They were great for the youth at the time but fck me they're over rated by people who had fck all else. Never actually stuck a lyric in my head that I thought fck me that's made me think. After the love songs we all live in a yellow submarine stuff puzzled me. Never thought they had a Sympathy for the devil or an LA Woman or Love Reign oer me. Certainly didn't have a Card Cheat. The Clash were my favorite band when I was 17, but this song passed by in favor of the other hipper and more punk rock songs. Now of course, I think it's brilliant. It's weird when young men can write songs that are more relevant to older men. They can see what's coming though.
I wasn't a ballad guy, though I did love Stay Free on Give Em Enough Rope. Mick Jones was a masterful ballad writer. Not sure why it vaporized when he went solo, but it seems to have. It was that proximity to Strummer that kept him grounded and emotional in his writing. The melody is gorgeous and haunting, and yet seems pretty original. Don't know too many like it. Exhibition of true talent.
Uncelebrated, but a sleeper re-hit in the making. Younger generations are going to find this as they go back into music history looking for meaning. Bands should cover this tune, except it will blow away their own material.

Favorite song from the Best double album ever. I love EXILE, LADYLAND, TROUT MASK, ZEN ARCADE, DOUBLE NICKELS, DAYDREAM NATION, PHISICAL GRAFFITTI and some more, but LONDON CALLING and IT'S ALIVE (Ramones) were my first touch with double albums. Still love & liste to iz, not a weak song, it's the soundtrack of my youth

Too bad the Clash couldn't play The Card Cheat on live gigs because there's a lots of instruments, in studio were played "Irish horns", Gallagher on the piano, but definitely one of the best songs, another gem sung by Jonesy. Each of us has a "king", master or vice that rules our lives and largely determines them.
