Three thumbs up .I have a small book recommendation David , The Book of Proverbs ,I have read it more than a dozen times ,that little book of wisdom has really made a big difference in my life.Take care every one .P.S. Greetings to Nick D'Virgilio ,keep up the good work, I just love your drum set reviews and of course your playing style.
David Garibaldi is a blessing, an inspiration, and a mentor to us all as people, and drummers, to say nothing of the fact his music is pure joy. Thank you, David!
What an innovator. David has made a very great contribution to the world of drumming and has been a great inspiration to me and my drumming. Thank you David.
David, we met in Ann Arbor Mi, TP performance at the Power Center, You continue to be an inspiration and while playing all of the TP tracks in a show band while attending CMU was a blast, my nephew Chris Coleman, grew up listening to his dad (my twin who played sax) and I talk about the TP pocket and the role of the drummer. Don't stop teaching and being the funk master!
JOURNAL!!!! There's gold in that word and process. I started doing this about 2-years ago and have been seeing positive dividends ever since. It's the perfect way to capture short/long term goals and the work you're actually doing to accomplish those goals. Not achieving your goals? Check the work your doing! Journaling forces you to be honest and accountable - honest with the actual work you're putting in; accountable to ensure the right time and effort to get the results you want. Additionally, it serves as a feedback process that really lets you manage expectations leading to more realistic goals. Do some research on SMART goals to get some ideas on how to create better goals/results.
Such a kind, gracious and inspiring human. To see someone such as David, who has had such success, still striving for greatness, is truly inspirational and quite insightful. It's clear that his success wasn't random or by accident.
David you are an inspiration to all us Drummers. That is a wonderful idea to keep a journal of ideas, and or keeping track of your practicing habits. Thank you for pointing out those books on personal growth, and that unique quote "Genius is persistence in disguise". Personally, I've always said that every Drummer has his own voice, on his or her creativity. ☮🙏 JRod.
He's been keeping a practice journal since he was 17. Wow! Someone needs to take that stuff and get it into a searchable database. What a treasure trove of information into the thinking of a great musician.
David! Here's a saying that you were fond of that I have taken with me through life. "Believing without action is daydream." It was your way of stripping away any excuses I might have had but eventually became a bigger source of incredible encouragement. Thank's for your sometimes painful honesty!
Had the great privilege to play about 20 gigs in MIami with Jaco in the the early 70's, never saw him anywhere without his bass around his neck:persistence
Mr Garibaldi est une personne très sympathique.Hormis le fait qu'il soit un excellent musicien il exhale un charisme et une manière d'aborder la musique créative. Vraiment un grand monsieur!
I was able to see Tower of Power at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano Ca last year. Vocalist Ray Greene was literally dripping sweat on our table. I do not have words to describe the phenomenal performance I witnessed that night. Incredibly groovy, funky, soulful and powerful, does not convey how great it was!
I reside in a Studio apartment, once a Hotel Room, but can practice and play a electronic kit, etc.luckily with no complaints by neighbors, next door a guy plays electric guitar.,so the place is sort of soundproof. I enjoy playing along to CD's especially Tower of Power, D.G.the Jam Master's style has helped me groove on & of course along with other drummer legends, too. Check out the beginning intro to Mahdi,The Expected One on Lights Out,Voco that is a excellent song. By the way,I like Mr.G's signature Vic Firth Stick, too. Lastly,I've learned warm-ups stuff from the late Dave Bartlett & the late Sandy McKee of Cold Blood.(A Lefty) Soul in your own small space is the key,as Rocco would say," Where know one can touch you".
What a brilliant humble Gentleman, do much respect for you David, Thankyou for your guidance and time for me in particular, and everyone.. I love your laid back attitude of skilful playing, just fab.. God bless you and keep you safe. Colin Reynolds Chelmsford, Essex. UK
Hey Dave,, awesome stuff as usual.. noticed you had Wrist Twisters book on music stand the Buster Bailey book.. my last teacher.. 6 years with him.. best snare drum player i ever heard Incredible player and great person.. many great memories and stories...fantastic book .
I play trumpet and drums (a little), so when I found TOP I immediately fell in love!! Anyway... There’s a lot to take away from what you said, even for someone like me who just plays for the fun of it. But I did fall into a gig years ago, albeit small...but I played drums for 7 yrs in a German band. I was still cutting my teeth when I hit the stage, and started out with barely any skill and improved as I went, and if I struggled with something I just faked it as best I could. No one complained. I kept perfect time. Free food, free beer and I got paid! But that was just icing on the cake because I was having a blast. I never thought about what I couldn’t play. That being said I do want to really learn to play well. And you’re right about genius. Thomas Edison said “Genious is 1% inspiration, and 99% perspiration”.
I do hope to meet you someday. I’ve been listening to you my whole life, and it’s really great to see you’re doing so well. Drumming is very philosophical, and you always take it somewhere unique. Thank you for sharing your wisdom
Thank you, David. Superb playing. I've written down the names of the books and will see if they are in my local library. Great suggesting to keep a practice log book of ideas and thoughts! My wife and I say you (Tower) open for Journey a few years ago. I was hoping you'd just keep playing..it sound to good!
Dave is in that elite category of drummers who have created such a style that any time someone plays something similar, it will alway be referred to as a “Garibaldi style” groove. I’d say that category consists of drummers like Dave Garibaldi, Keith Carlock, Steve Gadd, Jo Jo Mayer.... they just have a unique sound.
Two guys I recognize right off the bat is Neil Peart and Ginger Baker, I am not very familiar with the guys mentioned above ,JoJo Mayer I have seen a couple of times in video and recently David Garibaldi ,they do some weird and interesting playing ,I like them very much.Take care every one .
Such a great informative video on so many levels. Dave your playing, and knowledge is invaluable. Well done! One request please, if this is named gear fest with many of us teaching via online would you please list the gear used. Mainly the camera. 🙂 Thanks

WOW! That might have been the most heart felt and engaging drum talk ever. I'm not sure if I'd rather hear him play or talk; great at both.

DG is a constant inspiration.

Hey kids, they don't come funkier than this old school cat..
maestro do ritmo!sou fã
Great discussion and a lot of valuable insights. Not sure who came up with that title, though. More of his philosophy about creativity and practice.
HEY MAN....how cool you have Busters book on your stand
What kind of headphones is he using?
I have his signature snare but cannot play it like DG. No one can except him😎🥁
Dave, great video. The book titles that you provided have multiple authors with the same titles. Can you provided the author of the books? Thank you
You are not getting older but wiser.
Where is the mic?
Buster Bailey!!
the goat
Thank God he changed his shirt!😉
I was just scrolling to see if anyone else caught that!
When you have that uneasy feeling, "Ummmm, which gig is this?!?!?!" 1:49
🖤
Who wrote this book “Fearless” that you refer to...? Thanks.
why do drummers have a mixer next to their kit in many youtube videos?
Such a great informative video on so many levels. Dave your playing, and knowledge is invaluable. Well done! One request please, if this is named gear fest with many of us teaching via online would you please list the gear used. Mainly the camera. 🙂 Thanks
🙌❤️🙌
Garibaldi should go on Rogan
And talk MMA... Master musicians attributes
And to think we almost lost him.
If anyone thinks this is small....they should see my studio...I keep my synths inside the kick drum.
Always tasty!
I clicked thinking it would be a drum setup/mic-ing video, but got something more meaningful instead
Won't be listening to these again, if you are going to start out on commercial part, so loud you blow my computer attached speakers.
I always thought of David Garibaldi as the Bill Bruford of American drumming....even though he's way better than Bill Bruford.
