  • Welcome to another video on the K9 Active Health channel! Today, we're sharing with you Tips for Running With Your Dog, and What is Often Overlooked.
As dog owners, we all love to keep our furry friends active and engaged, but how many of us truly understand the nuances of our dog's gait? In this video, we delve deep into the subject, providing essential tips to ensure your dog's safety and well-being while running.
We focus on the importance of maintaining your dog's pace in a trot as opposed to a gallop. But why, you might ask?
Firstly, trotting is a lot gentler on your dog's body - it results in fewer impact forces on their joints and tissues. This is crucial in preventing long-term physical injuries or complications.
Secondly, did you know that a dog's breathing pattern is directly tied to its gait pattern when they're galloping? By maintaining a trot, you're helping your dog regulate their breathing more effectively, contributing to their overall health and stamina.
Watch the video to understand more about these often overlooked aspects and learn to better gauge and assess your dog's gait.

I have been watching a few of your videos and really appreciate the information you are putting out. I have a question. My dog, Australian Cattle Dog, very fit and active (we hike and mountain bike together) has a peculiar gait she uses a lot. My holistic vet, who does do chiropractic on her, feels she is just using this gait because it "works" for her. Her previous holistic vet felt she used it because of hip pain. She "paces" (like a camel- both front and back legs on the same side move in unison). She will trot, but not as much as I or her previous vet would like. She mostly paces, then will canter, then gallop. She used to trot all the time and even had a fast extended trot before she turned 1 yr old. At about that time she did get a back injury and has some arthritis in her lower back and that is when the "pace" appeared. Through good diet and regular adjustments and some supplements for joints she is very active and flexible at 7 years old but still uses this weird gait. Is is from pain or is it just a "learned" gait she uses because it "works" for her? thoughts?

Pacing isn't bad per se, although not considered normal. If your dog is healthy otherwise, and has been doing it most of her life I wouldn't worry too much. However, I would suggest joint supplements to support the health of her joints if this did appear with an injury.

@@k9activehealth Thanks so much for responding. She gets a variety of supplements and foods geared towards joint health. Certainly shows no signs of her age otherwise and hasnt slowed down yet.
