  • In this video we show you a 1969 Dodge Coronet R/T that went to Barrett Jackson Scottsdale 2024 that was a rebody and we show you what happens when you bring a car like that to a big auction. The car was inspected by Dave Wise, found to be a rebody, and the Arizona State police cut off the vin at Barrett. Amazing it got as much as it did at the auction. We wanted to do a compare and contrast about what Mecum and Barrett does to authenticate cars.

    5 or 6 years ago there was a 70 hemi cuda at a Mecum auction that had the VIN tag and fender tag removed and was being sold on a bill of sale. Story I heard going around then was it had been sold and proven fake, so Mecum bought it back, removed the fake tags and resold it on a bill of sale.
    In 2011 I saw a nice V code 71 Superbee sell at Mecum Chicago, and immediately afterwards it got discussed on Moparts, and a guy who ran a Superbee registery posted a picture of a VIN tag for that car he had in his archives that had that had a N instead of V on the tag. The car had been bought at the auction by a guy who was a partner in a classic car dealership in NC who had a dubious reputation, to flip, and he supposedly contacted everyone talking about the car on Moparts boasting of suing anyone who ever said anything bad about any car he was selling and saying “he never lost”. The online conversations on that car ended then.
    Pretty scary all the fraud I hear about, not sure if it’s possible to be 100% safe buying a vintage car now?

    if you know what it is and you're okay with it bid on it . care less about spoiler accuracy and side marker lights and screws. Glad it was found out before it went across the block. Drive it and enjoy it. It will never be worth what an legitimate authentic car is but it can bring happiness regardless . People who win at auctions do because no one else thinks it's worth is what they do. And if attempted Fraud is committed prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. The car can still be enjoyed but absolutely needs a safety inspection done because of it's circumstances . Interesting story and educational video good stuff.

    You really have to consider that at BJ auctions, cars very often sell for over the value. $45k really isn't bad at all. It's a clean late 60's Mopar "kit car". A nice driver, I bet. What can you get for $45k these days? A Camry? Now, I'd want to see under the car. If the pans and rockers and all are done well, it's worth that kind of money. Nothing sells for $20k these days. For $20k, you'd get that Mopar all rusty needing a complete interior and engine rebuild.

    • @SuperBoss351
      @SuperBoss351 3 місяці тому

      @@rocketresto i saw it on bring a trailer, and I saw what happened to it there. You don't just cut a vin off and stamp a new one in minutes, they need to run car and check it before doing it. I know of an orig paint low mile hemi that sold for giant cash a while ago, guy sat on car for years, had collected on ins and found same color hemi and year and bought that whole car and swapped vins and hidden ones, did it right, but at end of the day it was stolen. The specialist gave it his stamp of approval and was none the wiser. So pointing out one car when you have no ideas the games being played there is scary. Including fake bidding, buying cars back and paying fees to not get hosed on no reserve, and even the owners buying using shills. Its like any business. Make money. At the end of the day no matter how small or big checkbook is, do your homework. You being a Mopar guy should know all numbers like I do you'll see interesting things going on. Most guys selling have no clue what their cars are. Look at cobras, I saw Bill Goldberg pay 400k for a kit car that was crap because he could buy it than a real continue car brought 225k after and a real one did 875k so its ego, wanting a certain car ,ect. Goldberg is smarter of the hobby now but hes bought bogus cars and found out hard way to be careful. Cheers..

A black 68 gtx with the rad support numbers ground & filled with brass the qtr vins were for a satellite the dash was gtx & its vin still attached but their was one of the dash bolts broken. I heard confirmed stories of a 68 charger re-vinned in the early 90s with a green on white charger r/t, everything was transferred over to the 383 car including its numbers matching 440. So if you own a 68 charger r/t green on white with limited history have a close look at the rad support and qtr vins. Buyer beware!

    My A4/M6S A12 that I’m the 3rd owner, having owned since 04/87, was involved in a wreck 11/71, wrecked on the right front. The 2nd owner purchased the car in 01/72 and repaired the damage on the right corner. In repairing it he replaced the core support top bar and right side core support panel. Now of course its’ body number there doesn’t match. Trunk one does. Original fender tag. I pulled the broadcast sheet out of the back seat back. Galen Govier decode done it 87. Darrin Stanke and I went over date codes on various components in 2019. Original owner still alive. Ex-wife of 2nd owner still alive. My friend who runs a resto shop goes to this auction every year and say he finds cars that are suspect. Maybe making but he has a nose for fresh paint and condo smell. He had a customer buy a Camaro RS/SS convertible that was legit from Barrett Jackson, and looked so shiny and new. He inspected it at the shop and found it was done horribly wrong with poor patch panels, body filler over rust and had to redo almost every body panel on the car including trunk and floor boards. He said these auctions make it very difficult for you or anybody to truly inspect theses cars and he said to just steer clear of these auctions unless you looking for a high dollar car from a reputable collection.

    you would have gotten the convo shut right down.
    now,the same people who run and mod that site,will Promote vin swapping,

      @jimkueneman5489 3 місяці тому

      A VIN issue is not what that means necessarily.. Bonded in Az means the state has no documentation for the true owner of the car. You have to buy insurance and get a bonded title in that case. This is strictly to cover the states butt if the real owner steps up after they give another person documentation (title) as the owner. After 3 years the title will drop back to a normal title and it is no longer bonded. This is common for those of us dragging abandon cars out of the desert to restore.@@rocketresto
