$400 is cheaper than doctors visits and physical therapy. So imo if you have wrist pain it’s definitely worth it. If you think you might have wrist pain in the future it’s probably a worthwhile investment. I just bought a similar keyboard and I’m considering it a medical expense so I don’t hate myself for spending so much on a keyboard 😂

@@b.t4604 Do you mean you want to modify your non-split keyboard, or build one? Because unless you have access to a 3D printer and don't mind draughting with CAD software, the latter would be far simpler, whether you go the pre-fab'd kit route or care to reinvent the wheel a bit for fun, learning, and satisfaction. Although, I suppose you might find the 3D printer handy if you don't want a kit and to make it relatively from scratch, too. The single microcontroller present in conventional keyboards is doubled in a split one, as the main microcontroller talks to the PC via USB and does the heavy lifting, while the second half's microcontroller forwards its inputs to the main one by way of a communication protocol, usually I2C ("inter-integrated circuit") or SPI (serial peripheral interface). It's been something I've wanted to do myself for a while (electronic engineering student) but school's been getting in the way. Hope that helps, keyboards are as much a rabbit hole as anything else even remotely technologically related.
If ergonomics are a thing that matters to you, once you go ergo split, you can't go back. I have ulnar nerve hypermobility in both arms. You know, the "funny bone" in your elbow that makes your whole arm go numb when you hit it? Well those are nerves, and they are loose in both my elbows rather than sitting in the tunnel they usually sit in. What this means is it's really easy for me to rest on my elbows or wrists at an angle that traps the nerve and creates dull pain and weakness on the whole outside of my elbow, forearm and hand. My Iris split keyboard with tenting helped fix like 90% of it. The rest is alleviated by stretching routine and hand muscle exercices.
from the typing test, those switches sound like a topre keyboard. I wish kinesis would just do a hotswap board so u can put whatever switches you want instead of being soldered
I had modded an older kinesis advantage with a new board so it could run QMK. Then I was too lazy to swap over - played too many games. Now I am on a Rama U-80A(with box pinks, best key ever) , but still think about swapping over to the kinesis. Wouldnt mind a newer one with hot swappable keys, as my old board I would have to desolder everything.
I have this keyboard. The wired version. I bought a longer RGB usbc cable just so i could type further away. My left hand doesn't even know what the right hand does...cant aee each other. 😊. Best hand positioning of all the Kenesis keyboards.
Still insane how these split keyboards don't include a trackball or trackpoint thumb cluster (except for UHK). Kinesis, please make this... Moving my hand to my mouse is NOT ergonomic, and it can't be avoided when using things like cloud panels (I'm looking at you AWS web console).
Mouse keys in ZMK/QMK seem like an okay solution, but I haven't tried them. I tried using warpd which offers the same thing, and it was actually really enjoyable, but I don't think I could ever be as fast or precise over a physical point device.
The keyboard looks great, to me, but the quiet sound would kill me. Box whites, navies or jades would probably be what I would use. The loud clicks help me focus, because I can't think and work well without some form of background noise. ETA: I really want to try building a custom office chair with attached keyboards on the arm rests. I'd probably use wireless, but route the cables under the seat/cushion bit so that I just have to only plug one cable in to charge. I'd probably want to configure it so I have a keyboard like the Kinesis and a trackpad or trackball, and then I can flip the armrests over to have a steno keyboard (that's where the real typing speed comes in).
I'm the opposite, and I'm waiting for the silent 20g Choc linear switches to release. I like the idea of javelin-steno, having to run software like Plover is a bit sucky.
Give the Iris a try.. I build them.. love them. Small (58 keys total), ergonomic, split board. Now you can build them without soldering anything, buy their angled frame (not cheap but so heavy and worth it), the PCB, the switches, the key caps, assemble it and go forward with your bad ass coding! KailH JADES are the best btw. Love me some Jades.
Prime, how does the 360 stack up to the advantage 2? New style looks really good, but I'm not sure I'll love the capslock / esc move- how much of an adjustment was it to move to the 360?
I bought an Advantage Pro about 10 years ago after using a [previous employer]-provided Advantage for several years. [New employer] wasn’t going to pay that money for a “custom” keyboard. One of the first things I do with every keyboard is make CapsLock actually be Ctrl. About two years ago (maybe after the 360 was announced; long before pre-order) I remapped the 1u thumb key nearest me on the left hand to be Esc. I still had over a decade of muscle memory that kept reaching for the Esc in the top left. However, once the 360 arrived and that key didn’t exist anymore, that habit dropped off pretty quickly. The Fn key is pretty easy to get used to as well; my laptop has the same key, but I rarely use that keyboard.
