I was taught this method 40 years ago. Still use it to help instruct today. I tell those wanting to learn that you need to learn how to catch the ball in the proper position before you can learn to set. Still working after all these years. Thanks for the great tutorial!
great vid. how do you train your hands wrists to move in unison? I'm right handed and often my right wrist accelerates faster than left, producing spin...
Try one hand setting with your left hand do a few reps of 20s and once you can do 20 in a row try both hands. This is because once you train and work your muscles it reacts as if your putting pressure on it extorting more power. This will probably solve your problems, hope it helps 😁
there‘s a short on this channel where you like grab your fingers like outside those panels like in this vid and bend your wrist by holding the ball and pushing it down with your wrists with like 50 reps. horrible at explaining sorry, just try searching it in their yt shorts and try. it helped me to train my wrists which made my sets way smoother and with much less chances for doubles ig
"You don't need the Mikasa ball" - Truer words have never been spoken. The one you did with the football was also very helpful, especially for people who don't have big enough hands to hold the ball by just their index and thumb lol.
Works on the old style Mikasa too! I think the point about making strong contact with the side of your knuckle is vital. I like the cue that Alex Haapamäki uses for wrist action: imagine your hands are double doors swinging open, with your wrists working like the hinges
There is a balance to how wide hands are placed. I hate, hate, hate playing against setters who contact super wide if the ball makes contact, pushes their hands apart, and slides down half an inch or more, before they launch the ball out. Sets like this often don't have spin, but its still a double.
I'm answering this as myself and not for Better at Beach, but I think Mark would say the same thing. The technique would still be the same, however, I don't think you want to use a tomohawk set unless it's the very last resort. I would venture to say in most cases by watching your passer and their body language, you can get a general idea of where the pass is going. If you rush too close to the passer and then the ball is shanked and you end up having to do some back pedaling to get a good set, you're probably not positioning yourself correctly as the setter. So, my educated guess is be more patient in watching what your passer does so you can adjust yourself so that the ball is in front of you to give a good bump or hand set.
Super common issue!! Make sure that you are taking the set nice and low, right above your forehead - if you contact the ball high with arms outstretched and then bring the ball down before releasing it, you're sure to get called for a "carry" or "lift." It sounds like you need to work on releasing the ball faster - simply work on getting the ball out of your hands faster than you normally do. love that you turned this idea how to demonstrate hand positioning into a video!
Hands on the side of the ball. So simple; thank you so much! It’s a game changer

Ah, I'm way too under the ball. Still some time left this year to work on it, thanks!
Thanx for your tips. Could you make a video about tomahawks. Using it in defence and in attack + some tomahawk drills.
did you see our video from Wed? ua-cam.com/video/RnOk7vOuaV0/v-deo.html

When I set I always get called for a carry because I hold the ball for too long. What can I work on to fix that?

I see you follow through with your fingers, but I feel like that is causing me to double and I see alot people not doing that. Thoughts on that?
If you REALLY want to get better at setting, check out our Complete Setting Course at BetteratBeach.com bit.ly/BAB_Setting
so what I want to do is try to set by putting my fingers on the side of the ball, not on the bottom of the ball?
ok but sometimes the ball is spinning on the pass and it is hard to line up the panels on the set how do you fix pls help

Can this cheat be applied in indoors too??
when the hands are so wide I have tendency to go a little too wide and the ball slips throughout
Yeah, happens to me sometimes - I think the idea is to go as wide as possible while maintaining consistent contacts
Oh
^ Allen Iverson. Ironic answer for your name...gotta PRACTICE!! 😝😝
@@Red87starhaha let's play it
You have to keep your elbows in. If you let them drift out the odd ball will slip through.

Was meinst du mit "Daumen hinten lassen!"?
You shouldn't release with a flick. Keep hands in shape of ball after release.
lmao nerds
