  • The difference that I found between the ProKote and Flex Coat thread finish. I think you will be happy with the results of Flex Coat. The products I've purchased came from Mudhole.

    I am repairing a rod with Flex Coat . For my fly rods built 20years ago used it and all three rods are in tact and seen a lot of action. I agree it is a great product. Thanks for the update and breakdown of their product.

    Tried the pro kote on my first rod build and it stayed tacky for three days, so I used flex coat over it. 6 hours later it’s dry, thank you for the tip🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾

    I use a lighter to remove the bubbles from the flex coat. Just wave it by the area to do this, don’t leave the heat there very long. Started using it in ‘93.

    Glad to see this video! I have only used Flex Coat for guide replacements. I really liked how easy it was to use and was pretty impressed with the epoxy. I've never built a complete rod before but I have plans to start soon. I was contemplating using Pro-Kote (simply because MudHole uses it) but I was hesitant to use it on a complete build without experiencing it 1st.

      pbkayakyer I’m glad I can help! I think you will be happy with the results on a complete build just as a repair. I think it’s a more forgiving epoxy with temperature and humidity unlike ProKote. Now as far as a rod blank I will have to say the Mhx blanks have been nice.

    I just finished building my 1st Fly Rod and i want to follow all the instructions by the "T" . Got my Building Kit and it comes with PROKOTE epoxy. Mixed it for 5 mins wait another 10 mins before applying the 1st coat. Well my Rod been spinning for 37 hrs and 30 mins and still wet to touch. This just my very 1st experience using PROKOTE. Will try different Epoxy on my next Fly Rod.

    I have two rod builds under my belt and it takes a solid week for ProKote to harden. Needless to say I'm throwing it away.

    Yeah my first build was with prokote and it took weeks to build because of not only the drying time but the curing time. It still felt tacky after a few days and I was reluctant to check on it by touch because the next coat would fish eye probably because a bit of my skin contaminated it. I know now to check the glue in the cup and not the rod. Was my first one so I was naive. After a few weeks when the rod was complete and all the mistakes had been fixed I left it for a week to cure because I still didn't fully trust it.
    I have taken that rod out maybe 10 times and I have noticed that although the finish held up rather well it has yellowed quite severely. It actually looks crap now because it's a white rod with white thread.
    I switched to Flexcoat High V on my last 4 builds and it's superb in every way. I usually complete a build in 5-7 days now depending on how busy I am with other things. It's only a couple hours between coats and I know for sure if I apply the final coat the night before, it's absolutely ready the next morning. For dry/cure time, durability and even texture it's head and shoulders above Pro Kote.

    I find Flex Coat is a little more clear but less thick compared to Pro Kote. Flex Coat High Build is like Pro Kote light build, very disappointed. Unfortunately here in Europe Pro Kote cannot be imnported anymore.

    I started using Flexcoat in the 80s and won’t use anything else. Rods I built back then have yellowed a little but still look great.

    The waxy finish might be amine blush, slag that comes to the surface when curing occurs in colder temperatures. Amine will wash off with soapy water.

      How to remove bubble in flex coat?

    • @flexcoatcompany
      @flexcoatcompany 4 роки тому +1

      @@musisiamatir2515 To help eliminate bubbles you should warm the finish prior to mixing to about 90 degrees F. Then, once mixed, pour the finish out on aluminum foil so it will spread out, pop bubbles and aid in a longer pot life or working time. You can also flash it on the foil or rod with a torch or heat gun to pop the bubbles and aid in saturation, but be careful not to scorch the finish.

    What happens if You use Hi Build Hardener with the Lite Resin?! Would it work?! Are they inter chancheable?!

    I just started making my own rods and have most stuff from Mudhole. My first rod, the prokote isn’t tacky at all. The next 2 are after 2 weeks. Not happy with that at all. I feel like I just wasted 2 blanks and all the components and my time. Any suggestions?

    I like the Ultra V too. I like their lite formula on metallic thread. I'm subscribing to your channel, look forward to going through your other content. I'm going to be doing a video soon about mixing that I think will be helpful to a lot of folks. I have a hand wrapping jig that I'm selling you may like. I have a video up about it if you want to check it out. It looks like you are using the CRB wrapper?

    Do you use all Syringe Resin and Hardener, or do you only mixed what you need for 1 Rod. Thanks

    • @EagleEyeOutdoorsEEO
      @EagleEyeOutdoorsEEO  5 років тому

      i just mix what I need for the rod usually 5ml of each part will be enough for 7-7.5ft rod with some left over. The closer you can be on the measurements the better the results. Good luck on the build!!

    you cant compare prokote medium/regular with flexcoat highbuild.compare it with prokote high build and you will see the difference.i live in south east asia where it doesnt take long to test which one yellowing first or which one chip/crack between them cos the uv and heat we have here.prokote is the winner.
    but,if i compare those two with one component uv cure epoxy,those two simply far away from 1k uv cured epoxy.be it the strength,yellowing,leveling,curing time and shaping the epoxy cos we hate bulky shape.

    Noticed you said you built an OU themed rod, are you from the Sooner Nation? I am from Moore, are you anywhere close to me? I ask because I am a fellow rod builder and have had some issues with Prokote and was looking for help.

    Hello friend,
    I have not used the Prokote and have only been using Plex Coat. One issue that I have encounter is when I mix enough epoxy to do a whole rod, but sometimes when I get to the end guides my resin begins to harden. I have seen some videos and they indicate to use a hair dryer to soften the resin but it only makes it harden faster. Do you have any advice?

    • @EagleEyeOutdoorsEEO
      @EagleEyeOutdoorsEEO  6 років тому +1

      Lucio Morales one of the biggest things is to be very very particular on your mix. That will be the biggest factor on curing and cure time. This will be the case on any epoxy. The other thing to note would be that a high build will be thicker and set little faster than the thinner. I’m not sure if you’ve tried using foil but that will help. As far as using heat while applying, it can cause to set up more if you use to much. I use a lighter or a torch and slightly heat it to smooth it out or pop air bubbles. You normally get a good working time of about 7 min. If you need more time, try breaking it down in two parts when applying. You can do two small batches. I hope this helps and good luck!

    • @jamesmarshall1134
      @jamesmarshall1134 5 років тому +2

      Lucio Morales if you pour your epoxy out onto a piece of aluminum foil it will slow down the cure time of the finish still on the foil
