I’ve lived in OC my entire life of 61 years and until a few years ago we had cabins in Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead and this is the most snow I’ve ever seen. My son has a friend in Running Springs which sits at a lower elevation than BB and Arrowhead and they are ok, but they are totally socked in.

There are other circumstances involved in this one. Three stores had their roof's collapse. They knew that they were likely to get more than the usual amount of snow but didn't anticipate 12'of snow in about 12 or 13 days. The road to the hospital was only dug out a few days ago. I've been told that normally roads get plowed twice a day but many haven't been plowed at all. There's also been numerous house explosions and people are smelling gas leaks. One guy told me that he has a tree leaning on a power line outside his house and his roof is buckling. He called emergency service and was told to call back when it does cave in. He told me he only knows about two Blackhawks dropping off medicine at the hospital. People that normally go check on and bring food and supplies to the elderly or disabled are trapped or authorities aren't letting them go up the mountain.

@seventhday but they were wrong. This area gets snow every year and has a ski resort. Everyone also knows it doesn’t have a lot of snow plows. So it stands to reason one year residents could get a lot of snow that keep the roads blocked for a week or more.
This area also has the San Andreas fault running through it. Therefore, they need to prepare to be stuck up there for weeks if the two roads down the mountain are severely damaged.

I am single, female, 68 years, and in good shape. I’ve shoveled my deck three times during this series of storms to eliminate or reduce snow loads. Having said that, I can’t imagine shoveling the amount of snow that fell on this community-from a roof, deck, or anywhere else. I would certainly try, as this woman may have done, but without assistance I suspect it would be a futile effort. As a resident said in this clip, where do you put the snow you’re shoveling. Oh and when that 8.0 earthquake hits? There ain’t gonna be a road to get in and out of. I have a hard time feeling sorry for people who are not prepared for an extended stay at home in those mountains.
I lived there for a year. Some things are commonly known. They moved to Crestline. A rural town with one road down the mountain. One. That’s it. The other roads require residents to be able to reach Arrowhead or Big Bear first. Even then, your options only increase by two roads from Big Bear and two from Arrowhead. Going down opposite sides of the mountain.
They know it snows annually up there. So much so that there is a busy ski resort in Big Bear.
They know in the city the small roads are plowed last.
They knew this storm was coming. The media well covered that this massive, slow moving, snowstorm was predicted well in advance.
They lived through COVID with an extended period of bare grocery store shelves. Why didn’t COVID turn them into better preppers?
These residents could have evacuated down the mountain to a friend or relative.
Anyone who does not have a lot of non perishable food and paper goods stocked up after COVID is simply a fool. Pardon my harsh word choice but it is true.
Even if this snow storm wasn’t so thoroughly predicted it stands to reason that one year they are going to get a gully washer of a snow storm. That could strand them in the mountains.
They also need to prepare for a big earthquake that damages their two roads down the mountain for an extended period of time resulting in supplies not reaching their grocery stores and pharmacies. The San Andreas Fault runs through and around those mountains.
Instead, they didn’t prepare adequately. The main person interviewed prepared for three days and assumed supply trucks could reach his grocery store. Dude, Crestline is not a large town like Big Bear and you do not live in a city like Redlands with a lot of roads in and out.
So let this snowstorm be a lesson to these residents. Hopefully, they will be prepared to be snowed in for weeks up there or stranded due to damaged roads from an earthquake.
Anyone on medication. With a prescription you can bring in three months supplies of most medications from pharmacies in Mexico. Even prescriptions like insulin or asthma inhalers. The big exception are your scheduled drugs like opioids. Get a stash going. If a Mexican pharmacy freaks you out too much, the Costco in TJ will take your US membership. There also is a Walmart with a pharmacy. Bonus, most medications are a tenth of the price, so you can afford to pay out of pocket.
Become prepers. Research what you need to do online. Stop thinking the government is always going to be there for you to keep your life moving forward.

Trying to find help digging out is near impossible. Trying to hire a plow went from 700$ to upwards of 2000$ since they realized they could gouge the prices to whoever is desperate enough to pay it. Mostly older residents who can’t dig out on their own or disabled folks.
That it it’s all the short term rental owners willing to pay it so they can shove more people into their rentals as soon as they can.
So it looks like I’ll be digging out my 100ft long driveway with at least 5 feet of snow across the whole length by hand if I ever want to get out of here. Too bad I have flu and digging isn’t in my best interests.

I am referred to as a pepper nut job by liberals. I also live in an earthquake zone and in an area for potential deep snow. Foothills of the Cascade mountains. I keep a year plus supply of food, toilet paper, etc. 6 months of dog food. I rotate my stock, so everything is fresh. I have the ability to cook and purify water without depending on electricity or gas. This weekend, I canned 3 corn beef briskets (11 pints) that were on sale to add to the squirrel stash. I turn leftover holiday meals into soups and can them. It does not cost a lot to be prepared. Just use common sense and grind it out over time. Do not buy 100 lbs of rice and beans and call it prepared. That would get boring and bland to eat over time. Buy sale items a little at a time and stock up. It will add up over time. Learn how to can and preserve. Not only does it save money, It can also be an interesting hobby. I have a friend that we constantly see who can come up with different complete meals and soup mixes. Most of these meals, everything tastes fresh to order, you can not tell that you are eating out of a mason jar. Example. Make flour tortillas from scratch, use stored beans, dehydrated jalapeños, dehydrated onions. Garlic to make refried beans, canned hamburger. Go to bulk spices to season the meat. canned salsa or taco sauce. Makes a few burritos. Lot of work, but everything is doable on a wood bbq barrel grill, a gas or electric oven, or a camp oven.

Even where I live in a city, when they call for a winter storm, I always find my way ahead of time down at the grocery store for a weeks worth of food. Im talking about 20-30cm of snow, not really a big deal in the city, but I still prepare for it so I dont have to deal with it. The entire community should be out with shovels and blowers around the clock helping themselves and each other but I bet they dont. They will wait for help instead.

It took a huge road grader equipped with double blades to punch through our quarter-mile of access and that was "only" about 16 inches. And with essentially unlimited flat fields to push it aside into a 3-lane superhighway. Another foot or more since but over time and again, ROOM TO MOVE IT. Plus ... good God, its weight and mass days after its fluffy fall increases exponentially. A fight against sheer volume, mass and space now. PS: a mile hike? Boo-hoo! I did a 2 mile to just mailbox (not all flat, either).

Dire, is a bit of excited exaggeration. Let me guess, their running out of toilet paper?! You live in these foothills, you should be prepared. You should have a couple of weeks of canned food and/or medication on hand. Boy, I wonder how you would panic up in Canada with the snow and MUCH colder temperatures? You are not dying, if you were in a desperate situation, helicopters could drop supplies and you could stay there for weeks comfortably. Chill out! Pun intended! 😂
