I had to call the Eldorado County Sherriff's Department "Rubicon Team" to get my aunt out of her place outside of Georgetown. She couldn't get out of her place and her house is power dependent. The first responders are definitely out there doing the best they can.
This is a once in a generation snow. We prepared by reroofing, getting a generator that runs off natural gas and we have a snowblower. I stocked up on groceries. The thing is, the roads aren’t clear because there are no plows. And we dig our selves out and then it dumps 2 more feet. And still no plows, no way for people to actually leave their homes. And there are elderly people up here who have lived here all their lives who have no help. This is like a hurricane that destroys a town. No one tells them they should have prepared better and they shouldn’t live in that climate. No one could have anticipated this. much. snow

Total grid lock, people stranded in vehicles, buses with children for hours during the freezing temps and heavy snow fall. People abandoned their vehicles to walk 2 to 3 hours to get home. ODOT (Oregon Dept of Transportation) really missed the mark on that one. We live on the Oregon coast in a small rural town, 4" to 6" inches of snowfall/black ice,below freezing temps. Serious question, what would cause an explosion in a severe snow storm? I ask because I live in a cold climate and have propane. Are tanks susceptible to cold, or are exhaust vents causing a backdraft of sorts. I’m truly curious for the safety of my family.
I’ve lived in Minnesota most my life and cold doesn’t affect propane until -50 then it just freezes. Had to be a gas leak, maybe someone’s electric went out and they brought in a leaky propane heater. Or they had a gas leak in the house but you’d think they’d smell that. Best way to check for leaks is a spray bottle full of soapy water
My one guess here is leaving gas on accidentally and or unintentionally and then lighting it or a candle, could cause an explosion to occur. Not that, that is what happened to the explosions they have shown, but just an assumption and guess on my part. I’d definitely look up the type of tank you have, (brand) and see if there is a limit of temperature just in case.
I live in Big Bear and we have been told to clean off our gas meters because if they don’t vent, guess they explode. Some folks have theirs under 7 ft of snow

The problem is it all came down too much too quickly. It would be better if it were spread throughout winter but more consistent and maintaining colder temperatures to prevent it all from melting away too quickly. But this is the weather so we get what we get and sometimes it's not the ideal way

Exactly! I have friends up there in the same situation. The lack of plows and plowing is unfathomable and an outrage. People can't stay in those homes as conditions worsen with collapsing roofs and walls, gas fires, and even trees and limbs coming down from heavy snow. And you are right, how are those residents waiting to go back up going to get to their places w/out roads plowed? I know these mountains extremely well and know the density of cabins and homes in steep terrain amongst heavy forest now sagging with snow and ice. I was both heartened and sickened by the news story today of the man with a grader who was allowed up there to rescue his family -- but what about the many thousands of people who remain trapped indefinitely? Why can't the county emergency services and Cal Trans round up - rent - borrow every graders and plow and equipment driver in a 200 mile radius and send them up there immediately? These mountain towns are being impacted in a major way that is going to take a long time to recover from. I pray that your family is helped ASAP and stays safe, along with everyone else snowed in up there.

Well it was at least nice to see that guy with the truck full of supplies wanting to help the neighbors out. In this day and age I want to see news not just report on these events but offer some ideas on how ordinary people can help. I'm just brainstorming here, but I'd like to think if you got 100 husky dogs out there with a a few sleds they'd find a way to plow through the snow; people could use the dog's natural instinct to dig to help them clear some paths. And also to find people. You could also use horses to carry food and water like they did in the old days. Just a thought.
I bet they should have turned the gas and power off when they left. Maybe gas build up in the house because of no ventilation, then the pilet lights and automatic ignition to warm the hot water heaters maybe. Just a thought.

These areas constantly get 3ft Snow in any given winter storm. Just not an extra 2ft a day for multiple days. Storms usually pass quickly here.

fireplaces, furnaces, water heaters all have exhaust vents that are susceptible to getting blocked. That would be my guess.

A broken gas pipe. ALWAYS have access to the gas valve and tie a dedicated wrench to it.
I know natural gas doesn’t flow as freely or consistently when it gets colder, especially below zero, perhaps this is part of the problem.

People can't stay in those homes as conditions worsen with collapsing roofs and walls, gas fires, and even trees and limbs coming down from heavy snow. And you are right, how are those residents waiting to go back up going to get to their places w/out roads plowed? I know these mountains extremely well and know the density of cabins and homes in steep terrain amongst heavy forest now sagging with snow and ice. I was both heartened and sickened by the news story today of the man with a grader who was allowed up there to rescue his family -- but what about the many thousands of people who remain trapped indefinitely? Why can't the county emergency services and Cal Trans round up - rent - borrow every graders and plow and equipment driver in a 200 mile radius and send them up there immediately? These mountain towns are being impacted in a major way that is going to take a long time to recover from. I pray that your family is helped ASAP and stays safe, along with everyone else snowed in up there.
If their going to check in their properties, Can I assume they did not winterize the property before they left? Also, where are the full time residents with their snow plows. Drop your plows guys

Well it was at least nice to see that guy with the truck full of supplies wanting to help the neighbors out. In this day and age I want to see news not just report on these events but offer some ideas on how ordinary people can help. I'm just brainstorming here, but I'd like to think if you got 100 husky dogs out there with a a few sleds they'd find a way to plow through the snow; people could use the dog's natural instinct to dig to help them clear some paths. And also to find people. You could also use horses to carry food and water like they did in the old days. Just a thought.
Snowmobiles, people use them under these conditions in the Midwest for fun. Send them out for a purpose.
People purposely put themselves at risk then want to cry for help, taking away from real emergencies the dumbest thing ever.
