  • I review an exotic "space wand": the Rotring Core fountain pen. It may be a little odd looking, but it writes well.

    Rotring Isograph pens are still very popular with illustrators and artists. They use metal needles used inside the delivery tubes that make them more durable and precise than other types of precision pens. I've had a set for over 20 years.

      One of these days I need to try one. I've used the disposable version, but not the metal version.

    Lol! Love the light saber. I'll have to look for the instructions that came with mine but if I remember correctly, the write on system refers to a way the pen has an emergency reserve of ink. It has to do with those orange tabs but I could never understand how it works.

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  6 років тому +1

      I guess I understood that the orange tabs helped with loading and unloading the cartridge. But, I don't know. The instructions were so unhelpful that I didn't bother including them in the video. Luckily I enjoy the pen a lot, even if the instructions never referenced the light saber.

    • @alexmood6407

      WaskiSquirrel the orange tabs are The write on system. The idea is when you run out of ink you unscrew the barrel for half a turn. This action pulls out the cartridge from the feed which increases the air supply and you can use the ink remaining in the feed. It works.

    • @acerlazereye1232
      @acerlazereye1232 2 роки тому

      @@alexmood6407 Actually, it [unscrewing to that built-in point of resistance] raises the cartridge upwards on the feed 'throat' enabling access to the last few drops of ink within, providing about another 1.5 pages of writing [ie, "write on"].

    Loving the "space wand"!
    Not sure if it's a pen for my collection, but you never know...
    I'm getting quite into German pens at the moment as I go through my fountain pen journey, so maybe I'll buy one of these Rotring pens.
    I've used their drawing pens before in a past life as a landscape designer and liked those pens a lot, so maybe I'll try one of these someday.

      Rotring has a few good fountain pens, from what I hear. This is the only one I have used, but I've been recommended several others. The Core is certainly unique!

    Thank you Jason for the review. I have a few of the finishes in this pen design all with XL nibs. I have to say i love the way they write & the grip section i find very comfortable, even though it looks weird. They are, in my experience, reliable writers. I do agree the styling is weird & the caps are annoying because , like you said, they don't fit any pen pouch. On the whole though they are a very unique pen and really worth searching out if you can find one .

      I am quite happy to write with it. It's very comfortable. Just a bit of a pain to store.

    Thank you for the review. I just bought some new computer speakers and got one heck of shock when you switched on the red laser! Great fun! I thought you might have discussed that unusual grip a bit more, however at one point you did confirm it felt comfortable for you. It seems very odd because the grip goes against convention (not always a bad thing). I have to confess the pen is not really 'my thing'. I am probably a boring traditionalist. I can appreciate the unique design features of the pen. I am sure some people will absolutely love it. It's just a bit too odd for me!

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  6 років тому

      I'm glad you liked my low budget special effects!
      I wasn't sure what to say about the grip. It is unusual and it is uncomfortable. What I would have loved to be able to talk about it is why it is so unconventional. What did Rotring believe would be gained? I didn't know any of that.
      It is an odd pen. I'm the guy who likes slim black pens of the 60s and 70s. But, it is a fun pen to add to my collection. As a bonus, it does write well.

    "Turn this way" is for "write on system" that is some innovative system (gimmick) they implemented to use up the leftover ink that may be left in cartridge sloshing around but failing to get into feed's post (is that how it's called?). You start unscrewing the pen and it actuates that weird orange thing inside the section, that lift cartridge a bit that theoretically have to help that last drop of your ink get into the feed.

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  5 років тому

      Thank you! That makes sense though, as you say, it's clearly a gimmick.

      @@WaskiSquirrel I've also read that it was cancelled on the later releases of the pen. Actually you can remove yours especially considering you don't use cartridges.

    Hey Waski! A fantastically tongue in cheek review there, and to be fair it's probably the best way of approaching "Space wand". You nearly took your eye out with that at the end..
    I knew it was slightly bizarre but not quite to that degree.
    When I was very young my mother would knit "Toys" for me to sleep with, but the nightmares those hideous wonky eyed monsters staring into my soul used to give me were an unexpected feature. This pen reminds of of that...;)
    Loved the review as per usual.

      Showing my age a bit, but my beloved mother decided to knit me ET. Well after I grew up I realised she actually got her inspiration from Alien. Many a night ruined...

      I laughed out loud! I remember ET in the theater. I was just old enough to be entranced. For my younger brother it was pure nightmare fuel. I love Alien too, but I was a bit older then...

    This pen is so unusual in it's shape I would not call it 'ugly', even if I thought it was. Also I wonder how bad the part is on 'people taking you seriously', as I see people use all sorts of random ballpoints in work circumstances. Often it is just the last thing they got as a freebee from some organisation. An expensive-looking pen may stand out, a 'funny' pen might go unnoticed.

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  6 років тому +1

      True. But this is one few pens that has appeared on my channel which gets the remark "what an ugly pen." So I was joking a little about people not taking you seriously. There are worse sins than pulling out a Rotring Core to write.
