I love Microtech, but in my opinion that is the only thing that they need to improve is their heat treatment... 57 & 58 hrc m390 is not good!

On the fence between this or the Glykon, which would be best for edc, and carrying? I don’t mind the size of the Hera ii but I feel like the glykon is a sweet spot for blade/cutting length

So Microtech With the Hera II you may yourself TAKE IT APART… but NOT the 4 tension screws on the inside.
The 4 tension screws has certain tension and tolerances that they will know if you adjusted.
Edit: permatech white lithium grease, and either Remington Oil, or Heretic OTF Lube. Take it apart clean it up, and it ONLY needs very very very little lube, and spread the white lithium grease with toothpick on the springs.

I've been holding out for a "2024" version of the dirac or dirac delta lol I've just been wanting a front switch otf lately for some reason and if they redid the diracs it would be absolutely perfect! I love my ultra techs, i have 2 of them, but am really hoping they revise the diracs soon so i can get one of them. If they don't redo the diracs I'll likely cave anyway and just get one of the older ones to satisfy my front switch lust 😂 great video btw, sorry i tend to ramble!

If you're gonna spend $400+ on a knife, it should be heat treated properly. microtech has always had issues of heat treating their knives to the appropriate hrc and I don't want to hear the toughness argument m390 is meant for edge retention and rust resistance not toughness if you want a tough steel with the same edge retention use m4 or cru wear

  • @matthewf1979
    @matthewf1979 2 місяці тому

If ~59HRC increases toughness significantly, I totally understand that on a dagger blade. Their other knives need to be on the higher end of the Bohler recommended 60 to 62 HRC average.

I just bought mine and had this issue about every 20 retractions, was about to send it back, but I use very thin silicon oil and compress air and it hasn’t failed in quite a while, this might be a solution.

Just got my Hera mini 2 in. My first microtech OTF, the blade grind on the pocket clip side is off so the tip looks like it’s slightly crooked. And on the 4th deployment the blade did the bounce back thing. At first i didn’t know what happend but now after watching this it was the bounce back. Disappointing.

Got my hera II today, made in 02/2024. There is no sign of the action failing to deploy. Blade flies out, this is miles better than older microtechs. Also fullers are centered, and equally long.

Hey man thanks for this review. Just got the mini hera and I love it so deciding if I need this or maybe gen 3 scarab or Anax next. I wanna say, gen 3 combat troodon isn’t perfect either; mine has failed to either fully fire(once) or failed to fully retract(also once) I believe due to dirtiness and quick build up of lint and grossness in my pocket. A little drop of oil and tic and she hasn’t failed yet. Had it since December and only those 2 little failures which hasn’t put me off from EDC for last stand defense. I still trust her lol. Bad mf knife. I love the ct

I embrace softer heat treats but also appreciate harder heat treats. I carry a Microtech OTF and a 5 year ild large Inkosi (I own the MagnaCut S45 versions as well). Microtech’s M390 and Chris Reeve’s older S35VN is somewhat soft - you have to sharpen more but it’s easy and it’s very tough - little trade offs!

I'm not the biggest fan of microtech but I will come to their defence a little on one point. While they should definitely get the firing mechanism fixed and raise the HT I can understand why the fullers may be a little off on some knives. Being production knives means they have to churn them out quickly and, as a finisher who works in a paint booth, I can tell you that the difference in time and effort between something that's almost perfect and something that's flawless can be big. So it may not be cost or time effective to get them perfectly centered every single time. But I wouldn't look down on anyone for returning it if it bothered them.

I appreciate that you point out issues on otherwise reliable knives, like this bounce the Hera II has. From your discussion, it seems like you didn't - or haven't - contacted Microtech directly about the problem. If you haven't, why not? I imagine someone from Microtech watches your content when you review their products, but it seems like contacting them directly is the only way to _be certain_ that they're aware of the problem and take steps to fix it.

    • @metal_complex

I wanted to report on an issue I was having especially after learning that many others are experiencing the same. As I stated, I have no doubt microtech would take care of the issue if I contacted them. These reviews are meant as a community service. The best way to make sure these things are looked into is to report them to the community.

@@metal_complex Surely the best way to ensure a company isn't regularly delivering an inferior product to consumers, is to use your influence and stunning good looks, and contact them about it? Especially before someone inside or outside this community isn't quite} ppaying attention, and stabs themselves in the leg, whilst returning their knife to their pocket?
How can you be sure Microtech will correct it and return the knife for free, when you haven't contacted them to see if they even know about this dangerous reoccurring issue?
They sent out the knife like this in the first place, so they surely must not know (or care) about it!

You know I’ve really been thinking when I bought my first microtech the microtech combat troodon why I spent with tax and shipping 600 dollars on blade hq when this one and newer combat troodon are for some reason way cheaper with all these upgrades involved and since you were pointing out how it had m390MK I feel like besides the upgrades and how they kinda redesigned the Hera and the combat troodon I feel like the reason why they are both cheaper is because of the steel because the Hera 2 is like 475 and the combat troodon gen 3 is around 450 ish so i for sure think that it’s the steel so that’s how they cut down in price because mine is just m390 and from what you were saying the m390 MK is much more softer compared to the standard m390 and I feel like that’s why there both low in price compared to the older ones because of the steel differences and especially since it’s microtechs m390 but that’s just a guess I can be wrong also I have my doubts getting it because it is new and mostly all the other models like the old gen combat trooden were proven so I have my Doubts buying one of these new ones but it is microtech I’m sure you can throw anything at it but I still have a slight doubt because this is a new design I think I might just buy this Protech tr3 since I never owned a Protech and I really want a ots for edc
