Bang on the money again, Karl. Personally, I am the dreaded stereotype, dentist with Leica cameras. And I don't apologize for it. It is my only vice, gives me enormous pleasure, and if it annoys people, I seriously couldn't care less. I've arrived here via Canon, Lumix, Olympus, and Fujifilm. If nothing else, the build quality is so far better than other brands, it is mind blowing. So, I tape up my logos, and enjoy myself. Smile and wave, boys.
I'm not too comfortable with the revers snobbery of paying 15k quid for a camera and then put sticky tape all over it to signal something rather ambiguous. There's one unbeatable virtue of Leicas and that's simplicity. End of. It's funny you have to pay so much just to get that. I used an M4 and a Nikon F in the 70s and made a lot of pictures that are now getting a lot of recognition. Lately, I've done a lot of work with digital cameras and most of the times I've got decent results but the ratio of keepers has reduced dramatically. I've used Fuji X-Pros which are the nearest imitation and I find myself fighting with the cameras most of the time when they throw at me a mass of digital gimmicks I could never use. I carry my cameras in a side bag for street work and every time I pull the camera out some little wheel or knob gets knocked and you end up with something you didn't mean. Why not having a, say, 3 stage menu where you can have basics settings like a Leica on stage one and disable all the rest of the technology? Incidentally, most X-Pro owners I know use the EVF instead of the OVF, which makes them as much of a show off as Leica carriers.
This whole video is basically what I've been trying to say for a while now. Thank you! I love the quote, "Price is what you pay for something. Value is what you get." I've been able to afford an M6 for some time, but haven't felt the need to buy one. The thing is, I didn't need one. I had fun, generated $$, and did so much with what I had, but there came a time when I wanted to treat myself for all the hard work. Mission accomplished. The last year+ with my M6 has been delightful and, wait for it... fun.
Right on. I bought a Q2 Monochrom because I love B&W and what the heck. That camera quickly turned me into a Leica Fanboy. I have added an SL2-S, and am eagerly awaiting an M6. These cameras are so sensuously crafted, it is a joy to take photos with them. I ave a bunch of digital cameras (including a GFX 100S) which I use all the time but none of them make me smile like the Q2M.
Right on the money: after buying my Q2M I rose from the photography grave and I'm really thrilled again by just going out with this Leica around my neck and just shoot. The value exceeds the price for me in a way I can't describe (or maybe I just did)...
I've used a dozen Leica in the past 65 years, from a 3f, Ms and Rs, as well s Nikons of course. They are all a pleasure to use and do the job. Thanks for your video Karl.
First time owner w an m11 since summer. You’re spot on when saying every free moment I can’t wait to take photos with it. Def worth the price of admission and I haven’t looked back 🎉
Leica liker here, and owner of legacy cameras and lenses. Speaking of price and value - I would not be able to get the value out of lets say a Leica M11 considering the price tag. But I am very happy for everybody who buys new Leicas. And I am celebrating Leica for still offering film cameras and releasing the new M6. In addition I really admire Dr. Andreas Kaufmann who saved and repositioned Leica. Interviews can be found here on YT. Happy shooting!
I don’t want or hate a Leica but I do enjoy watching the history of Leica and the photographers who use them. Being a watch collector Leica reminds me of a Rolex. Is it high end ? Yes! Is it a bit overpriced? Sure! It doesn’t tell time any better than a Casio but it has history and prestige. So I get the love affair for them they just aren’t for me.
Thanks for the comment! As I said in the video it's not entirely fair to call Leica cameras overpriced as value is really only determined by the person making the purchase "after" the fact. They're definitely expensive but you could make a case that you get what you pay for with Leica gear!
I'm the third type: From auto white balance and exposure issues, to not really being able to see the range finder patch in low light, and low quality screens. It's just not for me and my style of shooting. I like the camera to get out of my way. I would consider getting a Leica Q2 or the old CL digital compact, but I would need them to meet the absolute minimum deal breakers for streamlined photography. Range finders look fun though, and I might have one to use in circumstances where I'm zone focusing at tight apertures, or not to worried about nailing critical anything for the photo and just going for sort of a vibe. I'd definitely shoot it at f5.6 or f8, set and forget everything else and make it a big old point and shoot. *Everyone should do limited edition versions of their cameras. The Ricoh GRIII street edition was amazing. Fujifilm's Durasilver was amazing. That new Q2 Ghost looks amazing.
You made some good points here. I’m somewhat indifferent to Leica in my own mind. As an outsider, there are two things I find strange about Leica however. One is that both the brands lovers and haters always compare Leica to cheaper alternatives rather than equivalently priced options. As though an individual might seriously be looking in both price ranges. It seems more likely you’d be looking at two equally priced options. 2nd, and this is more of a personal irk is just the advertising. It always seems based in the historic significance. When you consider Hasselblad and DJI, it’s seems entirely fair to be sceptical about whether past achievements really still represent the company’s values. At least at a “product by product” level. Idk, if the buyer is happy, and out enjoying taking photos. Does it really matter what the brand or what they payed? There’s an unfortunate amount of brand loyalty/competition in photography and I think it can subtract from actually taking photos at times.
Enjoy your presentation. Lifestyle. Thats what I tell folks at work (I'm a working man) when they ask why I would purchase a Leica. And I go on, look at me do I look like a Harley owner? No. Heck, I probably couldn't hold the bike up; however, it's the Harley owner's lifestyle to suit up in leather jackets and ride. Who am I to ask why not a Honda motorcycle. This generally gives them pause for thoughts and I then remind them I am a photographer, it's my passion, obsession, and I love photographing with my digital Leica's, the SL2-S and the M240. Having said that, I will say I do love photographing with film as well. Problem is, I have all kinds of film cameras and it's because I just love the mechanics, sound, feel, the tactile operations from start to finish of old film cameras. And then again, maybe, I am just biased because I grew up during the age of film. With that, my two steadies are the 1984 Leica M6 and the Leica M-A. But if I were to say which film camera, I have is my favorite, the Werra I is right up there with my Leica's.
I have Leica M cameras and Leica lenses. And I have never regretted buying them new. But I gave up other consumer products and holiday trips to save the funds to buy this Leica equipment.
Great video. I owned owned several Leica cameras since buying my first one, an M 10, in Nov. 1997. My current favorite is my M 11 with the APO-Summicron 35mm. It’s all I take with me these days. I love the shooting experience, small size, minimalist design and outrageous image quality!
I'm a Leica like-a. My M2 is as old as I am - and I'm close to retirement - and it looks and works splendidly which is more than I can say for myself. Sure, my Bessa R has a better viewfinder AND a light meter, and My X-PRO2 can do a million things the Leica can't, but there's something about holding and shooting with the M2 that just makes the world feel a better place for a while. I waited for years to buy it but I don't care what anyone else thinks; I bought it for me. It's simple to operate but beautifully crafted and makes wonderful pictures. A true camera for life.
Well said that man, like most Leica users I get fed up with the hater brigade. I like Leica cameras because they suit my shooting style and I also collect Leica’s as I appreciate the quality of their products and as for them being a fashion accessory for rich people I’m just a humble welder who likes a quality camera to use. Like you say they don’t make you a better photographer but they do inspire you to try and emulate the great Leica photographers of past and present. I’ve even got my grandson addicted to them now and I’ve started to see his images improving through using them.
Damn son preach on! I've gotten so many of these haters in my time once I got my first leica. Always a snarky arrogant remark. You kinda said all there is to say on the issue.
While I use a digital Leica (Leica M10), I have noticed the hate towards Leica and the owners since I became an owner of one 3 months ago. Mostly from the hardcore Canon and Sony users who have never experienced a different system other than modern mirrorless. They don’t understand that using a rangefinder is about getting a more pure shooting experience. I have never been so happy and gotten so much joy from using any other camera. And unlike those haters, I have experienced different systems in my short photography journey. To me the $4,200 I paid for my used Leica M10 was worth every penny and every time I use it it just reassures me that I made the right decision in buying it. The funny part is that I was choosing between a Sony A7RIV with 2 G Master lenses or a Leica M10 with a Voigtlander 35mm f/1.4 II. I remembered my experience with the Sony A7III and I still vividly recall that I didn’t particularly enjoy my time with it. I knew it would be exactly the same thing if I were to go with the Sony A7RIV and while it may be a highly advanced camera, the shooting experience is what matters to me the most. When it comes to modern digital cameras outside of Leica, Micro Four Thirds is what gives me the enjoyable shooting experience. I originally started with micro four thirds, went to Sony full frame, I didn’t particularly enjoy it despite it being a very good camera, sold it, went back to micro four thirds, and now have a Leica M10 to go with my Lumix G9 and Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III. To me shooting experience is top of the list when it comes to what camera I’m buying. Modern canon and Sony full frame do not give me the experience I want. It’s way too easy to get a good shot with modern full frame cameras from Canon, Sony, and Nikon. I cannot stress enough how lazy I got when I used a Sony A7III. All the experience and techniques I developed from using an inferior system like micro four thirds were abandoned and almost forgotten during my time with the Sony A7III. Even my editing process and skills suffered as a result. Once I sold the Sony and went back to a Lumix G9 I somewhat had to relearn everything but was happy with the shooting experience. After 7 months of being back to micro four thirds I had a budget of $5,000 and that ultimately led me to get the Leica M10 with the voigtlander 35mm f/1.4. That camera is the best purchase I’ve ever made and will never feel sorry, apologize, nor regret my decision to buy it. It was worth absolutely every penny because it was the shooting experience that my heart always wanted. That’s what matters to me the most and that’s why it was worth every penny. Now I may go for a new Leica M10-R in a few months as my M10 definitely shows a lot of wear and that’s why I got it so “cheap”, but I’ll keep it as my everyday carry once I get the M10-R because it’s my first Leica and I don’t think I can get rid of my first Leica M camera.
Great video. I recently sent a link to my website, to members of my family. My cousin said, "Beautiful pictures. You must have a really good camera." Which, to me, is like going to a restaurant and telling the chef, "That was a great meal. You must have a really good stove." I have several Canon bodies and a bag full of Canon lenses. They are a few generations old, but take "Beautiful pictures." I just bought a Leica Q3. Also takes beautiful pictures, but a completely different animal. My experience is, Leica is 2 or 3 generations behind in technology...but optically they are the finest camera in the world. You pay your money and make your choice.
Thanks gregpantelides1355. I'm a big fan of the X100 series myself. I only gave up my X100V because I'm shooting film for the next year and I needed the extra money to fund the MP. :)
@@karledwards Your X100V zone focusing video was game changing. Keep up the great work! Leicas are great cameras I only wish we could get one that shoots 120 film ;-) That would be amazing!
As a Leica MP shooter, I find there is also subsets of haters within the Leica shooting community. Seems like there is a rift between Leica MP shooter and shooters of othere Leica film cameras. Maybe it doesnt help that I tell my Leica M3 friends that MP is short for "mechanical perfection." So the other rift in the Leica community is between film and digital Leica shooters, which is a rehash of the film versus digital arugument. Oh well. I do love my MP 🙂
Leica liker here! ha ha! I am not in the 'wealthy' demographic (university professor - so not poor by any means, but not rich). I owned an M8 and now own an M9. Sure, they cost more than comparable 'high end' cameras of the same era (Canon 5D etc.), but as you say, I chose the Leica for subjective reasons - I have to use it, so I choose what suits my preferences and use case. My Leica is small, has great lenses, and is unobtrusive in public, and I love the way I interact with it (rangefinder, manual settings), not to mention it produces great quality images. I also own a Fuji X100T - I also love that! If I could afford an M11, or a new M6, I guess I would buy it. I can't afford them - but I don't hate the cameras for that, or the people that can afford to buy them. Thanks for a great video!
I dedicated myself to shoot nothign but film for the next year so I'm not thinking about anything digital just yet. So far film is giving me great result so I'm pretty happy. But that M11? Might want to start saving now for that thing... LOL!
I use to be a Leica hater thinking what’s the point of buying a overpriced box with a button on top. After owning an m6 Ill admit I was wrong and understood its philosophy and legacy. Your car analogy makes perfect sense. Some people will buy a old Ferrari or Porsche with the same hp as a new Honda Civic because of its history, design, etc. Those concerned about performance would buy a newer one instead.
I've been thinking a bit lately and I think it comes down to this: Leica cameras are highly specialised tools. Highly specialised tools are pricy. Always have been. Just look at the highest end sports cameras or high end medium format cameras. Leica aren't that expensive when you consider those. The problem is that people don't understand the particular specialisation Leica is doing. With sports cameras or medium format cameras they see the many features and impressive technology and feel that justified the cost. But Leica specialisation doesn't come in that same feature list and tech form. I think Leica can be summed up as follows: 1. unique actual rangefinder system for focusing and framing. 2. incredibly compact full frame system Nobody else have those combination of attributes. For many kinds of photography they can be advantageous. For the record: only ever held a Leica in my hand for about a minute. I actually think I might really like it. I'm not a professional photographer though, so just like it doesn't make sense for me to get a Sony A9 with a ridiculous sports lens or a PhaseOne medium format camera, it doesn't make sense to get for me to get a specialised tool like an Leica. It seems like the right tool for you though. (I'm taking about Leica M here by the way) Thanks for making the video!
Check my Summicron 35 first impressions video for the answer to that question. Price aside the 'Cron has lovely rendering and the size is perfect for my style of shooting.
i recently got my hands on an M6. Made the decision in a split second when i compared the M6 rangefinder with the Canonet QL17 G3 that i was using; the difference in clarity of the patch was night and day! Also the light meter pointing the direction you need to turn the aperture felt second nature as soon as i used the camera. These don't sound like a lot to shell out $2800 for a 3rd or a 4th hand camera, but to me it just made sense. Fun part, i don't have buyers remorse (yet) and i have been carrying this camera and shooting it ever since i bought it. Every part of the camera is refined and a joy to use, The film advance crank is butter smooth, the frame counter looks splendid, the camera feels sooo good to hold. Its a luxury item and i think i am going to click a lot of more bad pictures on film than i have been doing for the last 4 years.
I compared the M6 with my Fuji gs645s, I strongly recommend folks to try the gs 645, the rangefinder is not as good as the M6 but still very usable, the widest aperture on the fixed lens (close to 35mm on ff) is f4 and the build quality is not as nice as a leica. It costs a fraction and you get the resolution of medium format. I am now trying to bulk load 120 from 70mm spool film to use this camera in an affordable way.
I use my Kiev-4a that I bought for around $15 with a lens, and it works just fine. No viewfinder blockage also. Looking forward into Konica IIIa with 48mm lens, albeit it's almost impossible to find in my region ;(
I had a Leica X2 and absolutely loved it. Small, nice photos, and fun to use. I eventually picked up a Leica TL2 when they went on discontinued discount for $975 new. Absolutely NO camera on the market that could touch that camera body and sensor at that price point. Even at full retail average price of around $2200, it’s just a great of deal and competitive as anything else In it’s price range. Some stuff I don’t agree with for sure ($600 for an evf?) but from a marketing standpoint it makes sense. Can’t have a premium product and then sell dirt cheap accessories. I’ve been fortunate to have tons of different cameras from Pentax to Fuji, etc… every time I pick the TL2 up and hold it in my hands, I’m blown away by the build quality and feel. I honestly mean it when I say nothing I’ve held before compares. I’m not a Leica fanboy and I’m not a Leica hater either. I’m just someone who loves photography and cameras passionately and speaking the facts when it comes to Leica. They really are in a class of their own
I would also add that Leica lenses are known to be one of the if not THE BEST. I have used all the major brands professionally for the last 17 years (including medium formats) so not new to the game, thank you
I mention Leica glass in the video. Definitely agree with you on the character and quality of these lenses. Especially when you consider the small size of the M lenses. Incredible stuff!
Photography is about the resulting photo, it doesn't matter what tool you use to achieve that result. Any camera that gives you pleasure while using is the right one for you. If it happens to be a Leica so be it. Some Leica afficionados (users or wanna have) arguments are also just copy-paste B.S from each other. And yes, I truly love Leica, I could afford it but chose to go with another brand because I always choose the right tool at X moment to do Y. But I hope to buy one or two one day. Why? Cause it's a damn well made, sexy and attractive tool! And also because I want people to think I'm a rich and good photographer.
i didn't realize there were leica haters . my only problem is they are to expensive . it is hard to be carrying around a camera worth more than my car . my first leica was a llla that i found in germany for $50 while in europe in the middle 70s . it really stimulated my interest in photography , and i used an m2 for many years until i lost my darkroom and went to digital . i have used the fuji x100 and x100t , but they are not the same as a true rangefinder . a few years ago i was able to buy an m8 , and recently , an m240 . the m8 was reasonable , but the m240 was a little more then i really wanted to spend . you are absolutely correct ; it is a joy to have a camera , a tool , that makes you want to go out and use it . i actually find the m leica faster to use because of being able to zone focus .
The haters are weird, the lovers of many brands are weird too, we are all not the same. If I could afford I will definitely choose Leica, it is so attractive to me, but if I have to stick with one camera, Leica will never have me
Many different cameras makes photography fun, more the better, if we only have phones or just film models to choose from, it would for me seems that something has been lost from the hobby that I enjoy! I use a 5DIV with the Canon 35mm 1.4 L lens, it has not made a me better photographer, but I strive to improve my technique. People should just stop complaining, have fun, after all we are all brothers and sisters in the hobby, no matter what brands we use.
well done! I’m not a Leica hater, I’m not a Leica liker, I’m just a Leica user, because after a couple of years looking for the „best“ camera for my photography, I find that Leica M is the right camera for me
@@karledwards I used a M6 for 20 years and upgrade to the MP in 2021. I also have a M2 from 1964, witch is my year of birth. Digital is the M10R in black paint my all day camera. My favorite lenses are the Summicron 28 asph and my 1972 Summilux 50mm.
I have not tried one myself. The range finder experience is unique though, but I could not justify getting one as I have a contax ii with a full set of lenses. May be, in a few years , a iiig just out of curiosity. If money was better an M3 or if money no object a m-a. I do agree with you about the shooting experience. If it encourages you to get out, go for it!
Hello o/ I chose the Leica m4 not because it is a Leica. I chose it because I heard a lot of good things about its operation, size, weight, simplicity, good viewfinder, build quality, but most importantly. I can use my old camera lenses for the m39. So far, I have only taken photos with cheap cameras and only the Fed 5c survived with me for more than a year. I also have a Leica IIIa but its viewfinder is too small for me. Generally, I think that Leica is a good product that is predictable and does not surprise with anything unpleasant. A nice man bought himself a camera. Someday I want one too :3 Regards o/
I would love to have a Leica. I definitely understand wanting one from a “nice to have and I can afford it so why not” perspective as well. I get a certain amount of judgement for owning two Lexuses, one of which is only a couple of years old. Oddly enough, that judgement comes from a very similar set of demographics as Leica haters. I bought them because they’re going to last me a very long time, they make driving an enjoyable experience, and one of them is basically a Land Cruiser in fancy dress 🤣 I imagine having a Leica is about like that. I’ve been so close to buying one many times, but I look at the price and see how much good I can do for my business and how much return I can bring home with that same money invested into gear for the business, and practicality has (up to now) won out. I often wonder if I had the chance to get some hands on experience with one it might make pulling the trigger on picking one up a little easier, but I’ve just never had (or rather, allowed myself) the opportunity.
I'm a Leica lover. Own a Leica and inherited vintage Leicas from my uncle. I danced around buying one for quite some time until I finally gave in and bought one. No regrets whatsoever. A wonderful product that defines premium quality workmanship and performance.
Being German, I am a Leica-Liker! Unfortunately, due to bad budget planning, I have to stick to the "poor man's Leica", a Fujifilm camera. Two of them; but I can't argue with myself to get rid of one of these.
Nothing wrong with Fuji cameras!! I'm a bit of a Fuji fanboy myself... Only gave up the X100V because I'm determined to shoot nothing but film for the next year. Otherwise I'd still be rocking that little puppy!
I use fuji. When I move to the full frame it will be a Leica. I am not a rich dentist. The investment is worth it, if you value quality. Also there is nothing wrong with having more than one brand. Thank you for your video.
The people who are complaining that it's a waste of money are telling the world how broke they truly are...It's their fcking money they'll spend it how they see fit.
Great video, I mean on point on most of „haters”. But I feel like Leica might not be for me. I want and could afford one... but then here it comes: parallax issues, no corners in viewfinder frames, M6 lightmeter works only when cocked. It’s just not for my style of shooting. I know I would love one, despite its flaws, because it’s a mechanical masterpiece. But my pet peeve is most Leica articles/videos omit those facts, while in fact every tool has it’s cons.
Not sure it's an omission to not cover facts that don't come up under most shooting situations. The rangefinder system is far from perfect but the advantages far outweigh the lack of frame accuracy at closer distances (at least for me...) It's all about the psychology of the frame so I'm not afraid to clean up the edges when needed. As for the M6 light meter only working when cocked... That was a battery saving measure that's not present in the MP (which is essential the same as the latest revision of the M6.) This being said most Leica shooters aren't metering per shot and instead meter for the lighting in the environment so it doesn't come up that often.
@@karledwards agreed, so it all depends on the point of view. It’s probably similar rabbit hole we dwelled into to the discussion about viewfinder coverage in SLRs and why 100% is superior and a must. If you love (any) camera, the cons will be always out weight by pros. I’m happy that you found a camera that you love and fully support positives of Leica community. Cheers!
It’s a lot more fun using my M7 than my old Minolta. I really like the stealthy looking MP, but can’t seem to find a place that has a new one in stock.
Leica M's are just great. I have been using an M6 since 1996 with a 50mm and a 35mm f2. Luxury brands always attract haters regardless of the high quality aspect. Rolex haters are just the same. I came across a Hasselblad hater while I was traveling as well and I made an apology for not having an Alpa just to see his reactions.
I'm not a Leica "hater", in fact I don't hate any camera. However at 65 and having been a photographer since my late teens and used dozens (maybe hundreds) of cameras down the years, my opinion is.... Well first let me clarify. I've had four Leica's, a 1c and an M6, but it's the other two I want to talk about. Back around 2012 I had too many cameras and lenses so decided I wanted to get back to basics with one body and 3 primes. Leica had brought out the full frame M9 so I went for that plus a 28mm, 50mm and 90mm. I took the brand new M9 out of the box and did some test shots expecting to see some razor sharp images. They were soft! So I set up a test with a row of clothes pegs and discovered the rangefinder was off. This was confirmed by the technician when I brought it back to the shop which meant the camera would have to go back to Germany. They hadn't got another M9 in stock so loaned me an M8. But the M8 was a crop sensor which meant I hadn't got a true wide angle. They also gave me some center grad filters because the M8 had a metering issue?? So the camera I paid €6,300 for body only was faulty out of the box, something I've never experienced on any camera costing any price before or since. As time rolled on I began thinking about other things I didn't like about the M9, the way the rear screen couldn't be viewed in anything but subdued light, or the painfully slow recall of the image if "chimping". After three months of waiting I went back to the camera shop and they gave me a credit note for the full amount. I tried out the Fuji X-Pro 1 and immediately fell in love with it, which in my opinion was way better than the M9. I also got some Fuji lenses to go along with it and still had loads of money to spare. However I held onto the three Leica lenses with the idea of using them with an adapter because they're Leica, right? Not really, because I found when comparing that the Fuji lenses performed just as well so I eventually sold them off. So my thoughts on Leica is this. Yes they produced some long lasting quality cameras and lenses down the years (for a hefty price!), but they absolutely dropped the ball when digital came along. They are also waaaaay overpriced and there are plenty of other cameras out there now that perform just as good for way less money. I don't "hate" Leica cameras, but I think there's an element of "emperors new clothes" surrounding them and that when people pay BIG money for a camera they tend to love them and ignore any criticism because....they paid big money for them so they're going to learn to love them ("it HAS to be great because it cost so much right?") My go to cameras for image quality now would be the Fuji GFX 50r in digital or the Mamiya c330 for film, both bigger than a Leica obviously but both would blow Leica away for both image quality and price, and if I want to go smaller I'd take my Fuji X-T1 or Nikon FM. Just my two cents and I'll probably be classed as a Leica hater which I'm not, I just wouldn't buy one again?
Thansk for your comment. The idea that they're "waaaay overpriced and there are plenty of other cameras out there now that perform just as good for way less money" is covered in detail in the video. ;) It's really just another way of disguising the anti-Leica sentiment as a statement of common sense. My point is simply that the Leica M series (rangerfinders) offers a way of working that no other camera replicates. It might not be important to every photographer but definitely works for some!
I'm a rare doesn't care what another camera a person uses kinda guy. I don't own a Leica but I've never understood the Leica hate. I do appreciate things that were made to a high degree of quality though. My general suggestion: Buy what you like, buy within your budget. Focus on photography, not wasted negative energy. Live life, enjoy...😀
Did shot with some leica lens :)) most love is the r 135, the worst is the 35 summilux shoot in color, load of distort vignette, Chromatic Aberration, though shot on digital can make it less soft but its still a soft lens wide open .-.
Hmm... Not sure about R lenses but the 35 Lux Asph. FLE for Leica M is widely regarded as one of the nicest 35mm lenses anywhere. Just about any 1.4 lens is soft wide open - just the nature of the beast. But it's all about image character with the FLE.
I’ve tried the Fuji X100F and the Ricoh GRII for street but they never felt right to me. Since getting a Leica M I’m always looking for an opportunity to go out and shoot.
I would like to say I enjoy very much your channel, as for this video, even more. I bought my leica M11 in July 2022 full price in Cad dollars.....hell of expensive. Beautiful camera especially the black version for its lightness. I own also a leica MP Balck and Leica M10. I just realized that the M11 was not for me, and the Leica M10 was more than enough. I feel so liberated. My wallet as well. My opinion about Leica Haters, they should just Let us play with our toys and let it go. Oh, by the way...... I'm a Leica Lover ✌🔴👀
An even better example is watches, people will pay tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars on a device that tells time... Your Leica is able to produce hundreds of thousands of images over dozens of years without maintenance. It has immense value!
It is true that expensive cameras and expensive lenses do not make better photos. But, if you enjoy photography and want to save up, then sometime in life, you will have them and they last forever. RS. Canada
i shoot primarily on an M6 and as someone who has been shooting leica for a while i understand why people get upset it is over priced but the experience you get from a true range finder if you enjoy that style of shooting is something we will all gladly pay for
Thanks for the comment! As i said in the video I don't agree that it's overpriced - a term that implies its price is greater than its value. We're not just paying for a style of shooting - these are hand made precision instruments that are built like tanks. For me they're worth the price. :)
@@karledwards well we can agree to disagree I think its still overpriced for the bodies alone at the end of the day it is a box if we are talking about digital then at the end of the day its just a sensor that is easily out performed by everyone what they are really selling you is the rangefinder experience which i agree is unique but if another company would make a rangefinder for half the price im sure everyone would immediately flock over now if we are talking about the lenses thats a whole other topic since most people are talking about the bodies and not the lenses the lenses are amazing adn worth the price in my opinion
@@Hackzyyz Yup, I agree to disagree. But I have to say that you're basically mirroring the same arguments any Leica hater would make. "It's just a box" "Any other camera does the same or better for less money.." I've heard it all before... :) To say its overpriced is to say the price is greater than the value. But as I said in the video, value is a relationship that exists betweeen the consumer and the product the have purchased. This is not something that can logically be assigned as a blanket statement. Leica cameras and lenses are definitely expensive but that doesn't equate to being "overpirced". I'm also not so sure most people are talking about the bodies. Again, this sounds like a rationalization determined to paint the Leica user are irrational. Leica as a brand exists as the pairing between its bodies and lenses. And I'm not sure anyone would think a camera body itself would change the final image. It's much more about the experience of shooting with a high quality tool... Thanks for the comment though! :)
You are right. I love Leica. Tho to be fair. I only shot the Q2 for a year. And then there was dust on the sensor. And they refused me service at the store (not Leica).
The Q2 is a bit of an issue to clean the sensor because of the fixed lens. Send it to Leica... They'll fix you up and it sounds like you're still under warranty.
If you offered a hater a Leica for free, no strings attached, they would take it. That tells you all you need to know about haters. Use whatever you want to enjoy your creative pursuits.
I've never shot a Leica, but would love to one day and just see if it's the camera for me. I'm abusive to my cameras, just today I dropped my Olympus OMD EM10iv, and it seems to still work. I don't do it on purpose, it just happens. I would love the opportunity to own and use a Leica, i'm just not sure I can justify the cost on a teachers salary, but I do think they are one of the most well designed cameras out there in both appearance and functionality. Besides, people are always going to judge another person or brand, so let them.
I have never owned or held a Leica before but I always wanted to but what kills me is the price, always. I understand Leica is a luxury brand and is up there with Ferrari and Rolex, but I really wish Lecia would make "affordable" cameras for the masses. A lot of people want to use their cameras including myself but we have priorities or are intimated by the price. I know we can always buy a used Leica or a film one but with the rise in film and the used market sometimes being shady, it would be nice seeing Leica commit to the average camera consumer. Maybe someday I will own a Leica
That would be nice but I really don't think it's part of their DNA. They make a very specific product for a very specific group of people - kind of always been that way with them too!
I believe people don't like the Leica fare, not the camera. Many dream of it. I believe that the current prices for analogue models are still correct and affordable (I won't say the same for digital). The price is justified because they are real jewels of watchmaking and precision micromechanics mounted and adjusted by hand. An automatic Omega will always be more expensive than the digital model. The silver Leica M are timepieces. In addition, Leica is the only manufacturer to offer an attractive financing plan for its new devices.
You're just wonderful and i mainly agree... Se U for quite a longtime and mostly ... Think you're sensible as well as sensitive. And, with a good deal of humor ✨
I think some of the flak has come from the reissue of the M6 (personally I think it’s ridiculous and would rather have a M-P any day of the week) and the price if it. I think Leicas are the best camera in the 35mm world, and they’re perfect for street photography (and a lot more besides) - so any haters are wrong basically 😂
The new M6 is actually an MP with M6 livery... I think it makes a lot of sense for people that like the idea of an M6 but really want a "new" camera. For me? I'd wouldn't trade my black paint MP for one. But that's just me!
I like it because you tell it like it is, I want one, have always wanted one but my bank is an issue, so I'm shooting fuji now, maybe one day I'll have the opportunity, until then I still be doing photography and hoping.🤔
Not bothered what brand of camera a photographer uses. If they want to use Leica, Nikon, Hasselblad etc. all the power to them. Their money, their choice. I'd love a Leica, but just because I can't afford one doesn't mean that I'm going to hate on the brand or the people that buy Leica products. Use what you want.
If people think an M camera makes you a better photographer then it shows you that they're simply ignorant. I had few rangefinders and now enjoy an M11. That being said, I really need to put in a lot of effor into each shot comapred to my Canon R5. Haters will be haters!!!
The longer you own a Leica the less it costs. It is an investment in yourself and the used market doesn't hurt either for resale. Try that with a 5 year old Canon or Nikon. LOL Great video!
@@ofeykalakar1 I’d argue that all the current range of Leica M cameras tend to hold their value in the used market. There are certainly some that are more desirable than others though!
I love my Leica M10-D, I know why other cameras are better in specs. I know, coz I've own a few of them. In the end I just love using this camera more. If people call me dumb for spending lots of money on it, so be it. I couldn't care less. ;P
For (insert any brand) haters: If you don't like the product, don't buy. If you think it is overpriced, don't buy it. As simple as that. It means, you are not the target market of those products.
If one could afford $10 a day for two years you could have a leica body (M10) and lens for two years and sell it after 2 years and have $5k extra in the bank... if one can't understand the logic, to their loss.
l love leicas, but I hate people that want to point out in every opportunity that they are leica owners (same goes with other luxury brands). If I buy some luxury item it's only for my pleasure and I don't care about other's opinions...
Hmm... Not sure I've ever met anyone who does that with any product or brand. The presence and use of a camera does not equate with bragging about owning it...
Nope. Not a Leica hater. Just got the RF bug burnt out of me shooting okay Oly compact RFs, expensive Mamiya RFs, strange Koni-Omega press cams and hybrid Contax autofocusing RFs. Debating between picking up a Leica SL or a Panasonic S1R as we speak actually. Now, Lomo. Lomo pisses me off. $500 for plastic crap to foist onto impressionable, new to film photogs.
Ha! You could argue that Lomo's whole "don't think, just shoot" book was the precursor to Instagram... Fun little cameras... But everyone I've ever shot with broke pretty quick so you have a point! :)
I’m in the later group. I don’t care what gear others are using. I am a hobbyist. I know the gear I use will not make me a better photographer. Too bad. It is about seeing and using the features your gear has to the greatest advantage. Does Leica gear cost a lot? You know it does. Maybe the quality proposition is there. Maybe industrial design works for you. I don’t need the best in anything other than a physician or surgeon if I’m in need of healthcare. I hope never to have charges against me that requires my appearance in court. Again, having the best legal counsel may save the day. This does not translate to my use case of camera gear. I buy used. So I’m not using the latest and greatest. I use APSC and micro 43 bodies. They make sense for my use case. I’ve used Leicas on loan when on camera store photo walks. During the short periods I’ve used the gear I haven’t been impressed by the output I produced. Yes, too brief a period to make a statement about the quality of the gear. I can say using the gear briefly hasn’t made me want to purchase a Leica. I do not hate Leica. Most of my photography heroes used Leicas. That says something. None the less, the enjoyment of my hobby will not be enhanced by my using a Leica. A part of me wants to purchase a Leica. I will retire in a couple of months and will be on a fixed income. I don’t see a big ticket photography purchase in my future. For me, enough is enough. The gear I have is smarter than I am. I don’t use all the features build into these light capturing machine. The new models are getting better. I am happy with my two to five year old gear. I am satisfied with the results I achieve. My money is better spent on taking workshops and reading books than purchasing better equipment. For those that fell you need a Leica, you probably do. I don’t feel the need for a Leica. I can use my gear and purchase a red sticker to place on the body. I can make believe I am using a Leica and I am a better photographer than I am. Some day I may have the feeling I need to make the Leica purchase. Not now. God bless those who make that decision. Mask On Nurse Marty
The Leica/Rolex is more apt than haters think. Both are brands with incredible design, engineering and quality. Both brands' flagship products are heirloom quality. With care and service they will last forever. They also each started out as being expensive but affordable and have evolved to luxury brands because capitalism. Is this a bummer for people (like me) who can't and probably will never be able to afford Leica cameras? Sure. Does this detract from how great the flagship Leica cameras are? Absolutely not. I'm a Leica lust-er. I want one and I'm jealous of people who have one but I will probably never own one unless it's a once-in-a-lifetime thrift find (I have a friend who found an M3 with several lenses at a Talize in Toronto for ~$250 so it's technically possible).
If Leica can charge what they do and have customers lining up to buy their cameras then they aren't overpriced. Expensive yes, but not overpriced. If I had more cash to splash around I'd consider their monochrom camera. Their other cameras don't really inspire me much though I've heard their lenses are top notch.
Thanks for the comment... As I said in the video - Value is determined by each person's relationship with the product they have purchased... As a result, eorth cannot determined simply by the willingness of a customer to spend more or less money. Also agree that they're expensive rather than over priced! The monochrom cameras are definitely nice... Kind of interested to see what the M11 Monochrom will be like!!
I don’t feel I’d be a good enough photographer to get a Leica. Too easy for it to get stolen around the city too. Maybe when I’m 60 and have a good career behind me.
That's a good point for sure. It's funny... People often dismiss older guys who buy expensive cars as having a mid life crisis. But the reality is that it takes them that long to be able to afford a purchase like that!! Leica definitely isn't for everyone and the knowing that you have an expensive camera around your neck is definitley daunting when you're out shooting. But to be fair? I worried about that with any camera that I own. From my trusty little X100V to my Sony FX3 that I use for shooting video.
Those who criticize Leica does not make them "Leica haters." Let's put this way, if I show you five photos without telling you if these were taken by a Leica, can you tell which photo(s) were taken by a Leica? If not, it means it doesn't matter what equipment that one uses because it's the person behind the camera that matters. Without unique vision and personal sensitivity, a Leica does not make one a great photographer. Anyone who thinks that a Leica makes him a great photographer, he is clueless about photography. For those who have the extra money and enjoy a well-made good looking camera, sure.
This is the "straw man" argument that I describe and debunk in the video. Literally NOBODY thinks buying a Leica (or any camera) will make them a better photographer. This is just another tactic used by Leica haters in an effort to paint Leica users as irrational because nobody "in their right mind" would buy a Leica. Just not something that happens in reality though...
I found your channel today and watched some of the more recent videos. They're on the mark. I've subscribed in the hope we may be treated to some more of your well thought through, produced and presented videos sometime. Thanks.
I owned m10r, m11, sl2s, sl2, and some apo lenses, I also have Hassy, Panasonic, Canon, and other cameras. All my leica cameras and lenses have exquisite workmanship on the surface, but they cannot withstand severe tests. They all have many drawbacks that are not commensurate with the price. People are fond of talking about Leica colors, but I found the "leica look", or "leica colors" are not better than others, for example, the magenta shift on the m11 and SL2s, which is particularly severe in low light. I am not rich enough and can't bear so many cons. In the end, I sold all my Leica gear.
Wait, you're not rich enough but you owned an m10r, an m11, an sl2s, an sl2 and "some" top of the line apo lenses. LOLOL! This is pretty much the "double agent" tactic that's outlined in the video. Appreciate your comment though!
It's the virtue signaling, the signal that says I'm better than all of you because I have this camera. It doesn't really matter how you come to have that camera. It looks the same to those that don't have it.
Bulls eye…. Yes, I have a Leica and only the new Hasselblad X2D gets my attention from Leica. I’ll wait for 2024 when the Leica MF mirrorless comes onto the scene. Hard to deny the quality after holding one…
Oh noooo! A dentist with a Leica!! :)
Same here - the dentist :) I have an M11 and tape the red dot! Haters will be haters.
@@Eliehbk LOL! I'm actually going to put a red dot sticker on my MP! Just to be that way!! :P
Goes to show you. I’m just a primary school teacher and I shoot an M10R. 🤷🏻♂️
The last year+ with my M6 has been delightful and, wait for it... fun.
Ahh... Another convert!! :D
!!!
Def worth the price of admission and I haven’t looked back 🎉
Amazing! I decided to shoot film for the next little bit so I'm on the MP but the M11 is another great choice! Did you get silver or black?
@@karledwards silver :)!
I'm the third type:
From auto white balance and exposure issues, to not really being able to see the range finder patch in low light, and low quality screens.
On point.
M11... still no tilting screen.
@@mainStream-user It’s great solution for street photography.
Mmm.. APO 35... ;)
Agree 100% with everything except two comments about the Leica T ❤
Hehehe. I actually didn't say anything negative about the Leica T... But that video!! It haunts my dreams!!
I am so happy you enjoy your Leica. May you have many years of wonderfully inspired photography! Fuji X100V owner, here ;-)
Thanks gregpantelides1355.
As a M3 and M2 user for about 50 years never saw the need to get a new one, but if I were in the need then I’d opt for the MA
If only those people put that time and effort into becoming better photographers than worrying about what camera someone else is using…
I’m a Leica admirer. Will never be able to get my hands on one, but love the craftsmanship.
Look into the Leica Barnack cameras. Still a great buy.
@@garysong8163 thanks for the recommendation.
You have no idea how good this video is. Hopefully you upload more soon
I think Leica can be summed up as follows:
1. unique actual rangefinder system for focusing and framing.
2. incredibly compact full frame system
Nobody else have those combination of attributes.
(I'm taking about Leica M here by the way)
Thanks for making the video!
Hi Karl, if budget is no objection. Which lens would go for?
Looking forward into Konica IIIa with 48mm lens, albeit it's almost impossible to find in my region ;(
Glad to hear your camera works fine. A bit off topic but good to know! ;)
I bought my Leica hoping people would think I'm a dentist! So far it hasn't worked! LOL!
@@karledwards 😂 this is because you're scary! You look like someone who likes to inflict pain, Leica or not, I'm not gonna trust you with my teeth 😆
@@REMY.C. LOL! A wise decision... :)
i didn't realize there were leica haters . my only problem is they are to expensive . it is hard to be carrying around a camera worth more than my car . my first leica was a llla that i found in germany for $50 while in europe in the middle 70s . it really stimulated my interest in photography , and i used an m2 for many years until i lost my darkroom and went to digital . i have used the fuji x100 and x100t , but they are not the same as a true rangefinder . a few years ago i was able to buy an m8 , and recently , an m240 . the m8 was reasonable , but the m240 was a little more then i really wanted to spend . you are absolutely correct ; it is a joy to have a camera , a tool , that makes you want to go out and use it . i actually find the m leica faster to use because of being able to zone focus .
People should just stop complaining, have fun, after all we are all brothers and sisters in the hobby, no matter what brands we use.
well done!
I’m not a Leica hater, I’m not a Leica liker, I’m just a Leica user, because after a couple of years looking for the „best“ camera for my photography, I find that Leica M is the right camera for me
Nice! Which M did you pick up?
Hello o/
I chose the Leica m4 not because it is a Leica.
I bought them because they’re going to last me a very long time, they make driving an enjoyable experience, and one of them is basically a Land Cruiser in fancy dress 🤣
I imagine having a Leica is about like that.
These cameras are very triggering for people who love photography but cannot afford them.
All haters are weird not matter what their hate is based on.
Finally someone says it... No one ask you to like it but there are people just do. Respect please...
The people who are complaining that it's a waste of money are telling the world how broke they truly are...It's their fcking money they'll spend it how they see fit.
I don't think we'd be having this discussion if Leica cameras were priced the same as Sony or Canon. Price really seems to be the trigger here... :)
Cheers!
@@Netcom27 Thanks!! For me is always about the psychology of the frame over the precision of the edges. But I’m weird that way! :)
I hope you’re alright.
All's well. Just took a little break... Stuff's happening again though!
It’s a lot more fun using my M7 than my old Minolta. I really like the stealthy looking MP, but can’t seem to find a place that has a new one in stock.
I'm pretty sure it's still a 2 year waiting list. I got super lucky and found one in stock at the Leica Store Amsterdam and had it shipped to Canada.
I don't "hate" Leica cameras, but I think there's an element of "emperors new clothes" surrounding them and that when people pay BIG money for a camera they tend to love them and ignore any criticism because....they paid big money for them so they're going to learn to love them ("it HAS to be great because it cost so much right?")
My go to cameras for image quality now would be the Fuji GFX 50r in digital or the Mamiya c330 for film, both bigger than a Leica obviously but both would blow Leica away for both image quality and price, and if I want to go smaller I'd take my Fuji X-T1 or Nikon FM.
It might not be important to every photographer but definitely works for some!
this was fun to listen too. I don't really know any Leica haters but fun to listen too.
Glad you enjoyed!!
100% agree!!
Your attitude is always spot on, John! Love it.
@@karledwards oh i forgot to mention its a v1 :)) i just dont like its vignette and distort.
@@ducnguyen1999 Ahh… There’s a reason they update these things… have a look at the latest FLE and you’ll be surprised!
I want on the Leica teams so badly. One day!
I’ve tried the Fuji X100F and the Ricoh GRII for street but they never felt right to me. Since getting a Leica M I’m always looking for an opportunity to go out and shoot.
Leica cameras have their charms, that's for sure!
Great video. Leica owner here!
I've heard from a lot of Leica shooters that have shifted back to the M10 from the M11. The M10 just hit the sweet spot it seems...
An even better example is watches, people will pay tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars on a device that tells time... Your Leica is able to produce hundreds of thousands of images over dozens of years without maintenance. It has immense value!
what's bad about wearing an expensive watch? it is not just to tell time, but is also a piece of jewelry.
@@eelcj1 I agree, I was just giving an example on how you cannot judge these items by their basic functions only.
Yes. I like Leica. The quality of the lens is good and captured sharp image better than some dslr or mirroless cameras.
@@karledwards well we can agree to disagree I think its still overpriced for the bodies alone at the end of the day it is a box if we are talking about digital then at the end of the day its just a sensor that is easily out performed by everyone
what they are really selling you is the rangefinder experience which i agree is unique but if another company would make a rangefinder for half the price im sure everyone would immediately flock over
now if we are talking about the lenses thats a whole other topic since most people are talking about the bodies and not the lenses the lenses are amazing adn worth the price in my opinion
@@Hackzyyz Yup, I agree to disagree. But I have to say that you're basically mirroring the same arguments any Leica hater would make. "It's just a box" "Any other camera does the same or better for less money.." I've heard it all before... :)
To say its overpriced is to say the price is greater than the value.
So often street photography is' Boring photos of people walking" ☺👍
I couldn't resist! :)
Spot on. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
If you offered a hater a Leica for free, no strings attached, they would take it. That tells you all you need to know about haters. Use whatever you want to enjoy your creative pursuits.
Yup, even if the price was the same as Sony or Canon... I don't think we'd be having this conversation at all! :)
I love my Leica, and I don't give a damn about those haters. 😆
Right on! :)
People worry too much about how other people spend their hard earned money.
Agreed!
Ain’t nothing wrong with Fuji cameras! The X100 series is just about my favorite camera ever… :)
Thanks mister!!
That’s the case for their film cameras- probably a select few digital M’s like special editions and the rare M10-D’s
I couldn't care less. ;P
Where did you go?
Had to take some time off... Hopefully back at things soon. I have an X100VI in house and will be filming some stuff this week!
funny, i wish there was another brand with real rangefinder/ovf still alive. like bessa - a subaru of rangefinders.
For (insert any brand) haters: If you don't like the product, don't buy. If you think it is overpriced, don't buy it. As simple as that. It means, you are not the target market of those products.
Like I said in the video, I wonder if "not being the target market" is what's fueling the Leica haters. Explains a lot!
Why wasting our precious energy on empty negativity.
Let people hate, if they want to hate.
I'm afraid there's little we can do to stop the Leica haters. But it was a fun excersize to try and figure out where they're coming from! :)
i dont really care what gears ppls used but "special" gears "wow"ed me. leica and hasselblad are two example of "special" gears on my eyes
Never tried one. Too expensive for me :)

What strap is that?
The strap is from harrybenz.com - but mine is an older color that he doesn't make anymore. Amazing straps!
I, myself, drank the Leica Kool-aid. Sooooo tasty!
I found your channel today and watched some of the more recent videos. They're on the mark. I've subscribed in the hope we may be treated to some more of your well thought through, produced and presented videos sometime. Thanks.
Much appreciated. Took a little break but more vids are on the way!
Neither a hater nor a Leica. Far more ostentatious neophytes buy top-of-the-line Canikony than Leica. I'm content with what I can afford.
Really don’t care what camera you use, just happy that you use a camera😊😄
I hear that!! :)
@@karledwards But that being said, I am a slight tech geek so I am always curious about tech😅😁
Well said !! 👍🏻
It's the virtue signaling, the signal that says I'm better than all of you because I have this camera. It doesn't really matter how you come to have that camera. It looks the same to those that don't have it.
That's just a value judgment you're bringing the experience. I've ever met anyone that feels that way about anything they own. Camera or otherwise.
Bulls eye…. Yes, I have a Leica and only the new Hasselblad X2D gets my attention from Leica. I’ll wait for 2024 when the Leica MF mirrorless comes onto the scene. Hard to deny the quality after holding one…
