Good photography is often difficult, but for me it's a little easier when I keep a single question in mind. That's the point of this video, to discuss what I ask myself before I point my camera at something. Also I'm out walking in Snowdonia, which is nice.

Tension = Attention
Thanks for watching :)
ahah remind me of a really bad french song from the 80's . thanks again for the great tips! ua-cam.com/video/LRAwB4Nrybo/v-deo.html wait for 1:21 to hear it ;)
Gopro 9 is better
Sight + Sound + Motion = Emotion
"There was no tension but I wanted my chocolate." 🤣
Relatable.
When that bird flew over the crest of the mountain... damn that'd have made a class photo
I thought the same
Stabilised image quality was a clear winner for me. Would totally understand if you went for what is easier to use though!
I don't understand why I don't have more success... people ask plenty of questions about my photos, such as: why would you shoot that? What were you even trying to do? or What were you doing in those bushes?
:D
haha!
I definitely prefer the GoPro footage, I prefer the super wide angle as well the stabilization
"I'll just clone them in, maybe I'll cheat and do that" haha feels good to be in your circle of trust
I've seen that 2:21 picture of the football about to hit the game board before on a meme, "Those kids are about to learn a load of new swear words"
Oooh another video. You're spoiling us.
"I shoot with what I like" - this is why yous is my favorite "photography" YT channel, and why i've bought your book and puppy print. 5:22
Much appreciated mate :)
Been giving this idea of taking photos "about" things rather than "of" things a lot of thought. So far, to me it relates to taking photos that put the subject in context. I can take a picture of a flower. Easily done. But, it's the location of that flower, and its surroundings, that could make it really interesting. In my case, it's flowers in a garden at a local historic site where the flower is one part of the story. Great philosophy!
So glad your knee is better 👍. I prefer theGoPro footage, less jumpy. Loving the new paint colour on your wall, very impressed with your matching hoody and the drawstrings picking out the teal of your lights, I love blue n teal.
Yes, thank you squarespace !!!
This opening shot blew me away.
Also clip from GoPro is much better.
Love the honesty in your videos
Many years since I went past Llyn Idwal. Lovely to see the area again.
Another excellent video. Good to see you back out in the hills.
Just seen the news on Instagram. Many congratulations to you & Emily. 👍🍻
"The aim of the game remains the same ..." what a poet ! Thanks for the (always good) video(s) James !
I'm never tired of this scenery.
Me too :)
@@JamesPopsysPhoto To answer your question in the end of the video - I did not for one second analyse the video quality nor the sound the microphone picked up of you in the mountains. That is a good thing since I only focused on the story! The set up works nicely.
@@jonathanbooj8347 Thanks mate :)
Why don't you just vlog with the G9 you big girls blouse?
Stabilisation in the body and lens!!!
Three exclamation marks above, life's to short man! Do it, be like Bazmatron ✌️
Hi James,
I've got the same problem with the knee. I start to believe it's from driving to and from work. Get well soon.
Great stuff about the video too.
Wow, when that bird flew into view over that mountain. Also I love the shot where you blended those two walkers into the best position to walk into the fog. That was one hell of a difficult landscape to walk into while nursing a recovering knee! As for the video, I don't know which camera you used to film the scenic shots at the start of the vlog, but it was tack sharp and brilliant. That said when you showed the comparison section at the end I would always prefer the stabilized version of those clips - to avoid seasickness. Thanks for an excellent video.
Loved the tension explanation. Thank you. And the GO Pro is the way to go
Love the attention to detail in the office portion at the end... making sure the jumper colours match the room lighting.
Nice video. Love the studio setup. Really nice. Go with the GoPro. The stabilization is very important to not make us feel ill ;)
Glad your knee is healed up! Gotta love the scenery. Can't wait until we're allowed to cross the border and I can return here with camera and bike! I enjoy these kind of videos from you. I was lucky enough to stumble across one of your earlier videos when I started photography last year where you were talking about making images about something, rather than of something, and that really struck a chord with me. It's helped me loads and I'm sure cut years off of me taking rubbish snapshots and wondering what is missing!! This takes it to another level so cheers.
excellent tip re: the relationship of attention/tension... re: the cam to use for video, I think I would prefer the go pro, simply because I get motion sick easily.
Thanks again for a great discussion! Love those mountains.
You can always use one of those motorized gimbal Stabilizers with your Sony. They are compact, light and gives you what you what.
Some filmmakers say -- sound quality is more important that the image quality (sorry Go Pro).
Injured my knee pretty bad about 2 years ago snowboarding. I find using a compression wrap or sleeve helps for hikes or activities, it keeps the knee stable and adds some extra support. Hope your knee feels better 😊
GoPro field of view and stabilization are a big winner. Maybe try a flatter video profile on it so you don't get the super contrast and crushed blacks.
Amazing! loving the drone shots.
Hi James, as long as there is not too much wind I agree, the gopro is doing a better job.
Killing the drone footage at the mo!
thank you James my mind's boggled just simply brilliant view point on creation of photos. Tension is a good thing.!!!
Got the same La Sportiva boots👍🏼
I do learn a lot from this type of video James
Amazing cinematography in this one.
Great opening sequence. Go with image stabilisation over external mic.... Keep shooting, love your work
James, really cool photography concept, you are absolutely bang on yet again.
The Sony footage was frustrating with the stabilization for sure, the GoPro looks significantly better. Perhaps look at the Insta360 One R or One X2 but the One R has the mic jack right on it, no media mod and reviews seem to indicate it's an excellent camera (even better stabilization than the GoPro 8). Another option is simply an external audio recorder plus the GoPro, that's probably ideal.
Nice to see my backyard through other eyes. Say Hello if you spot me out and about 😊👍
The GoPro is easier to watch, but if you want us to imagine you walking up rugged terrain then the Sony gives that added vibe. (Nice to know the wind picks on you, too. Me: doing a plant close up, wind out of nowhere moves everything.) -Elaine
Was at that lake on Christmas Day! Great to see you out and about. We're about to go to Aber falls despite the driving rain, screw the weather - we have freedom! PS: GoPro was better 👍
I am a photography student at the moment and I think this is the best concept to adapt when I’m taking photos. Thanks for the great insight ✌️
As a married man of thirty years, I know who tells you what to do and when to do it, and it ain't Lumix.
He is still a younging
haha, shhhh - she'll hear...
Personally, I discovered something similar to what this video covers a few months ago but it took the form of "Take photos that make you ask a question." I found that my favorite photos frequently made me ask things such as "why is it like that?", "how did that get there?", "who is that?", etc.
Stabilization is way more important than "maximum image quality" although I have to say that, in this example & side-by-side at least, the GoPro look is just.....different, from what you usually do. That being said - did you consider a DJI Pocket? It'll stabilize even more bonkers-er and you can do some nifty stuff with motionlapses that might be interesting to see. James at work and what not....
GoPro footage hands down. Might be worth reaching out to David Manning to see if he has any Media Mod / external mic advice.
Get a Røde Wireless Go (just updated to v2 but the original is fine). The receiver clips onto and plugs into the Media Mod. Easy peasy. You may still have to fiddle with sound in post because the GoPro preamps aren't great. But overall, a great solution for the money.
I'm glad your knee is better. Those driving injuries can be nasty. 🙄
Last fall I rented a ZV1 for a couple of weeks. I didn't do any vlogging with it but did do some walking around filming and with the camera pointed away from me I never noticed a real problem with the stabilization and was actually impressed with the video quality. I had a mini tripod on it that I could use as a handle and I think that helped with stabilizing too. Your Go-Pro was definitely better.
Lovely location James! Nice tips thanks👍
Hi James, great Video as always.
ImO the gopro does a better job.
It shows more of the scenery and it's much smoother.
So glad you're knee is getting better , I need you up in them thar mountains, hopefully be up y Garn myself soon. The shots you took were so simple and effective loved the vlog bud. 💪
Nice video, thanks for sharing. About the question, have to rule in favor of the GO Pro regarding stability and easy looking. Very happy your knee is better, it's more than enough to cope with Covid and lock down and not get your knee to worry about also.
Was so good to see you on Joe Allams podcast the other day. The video looks great so far.
Cheers mate! That was fun :)
You can get a 3.5mm adapter for the GoPro so you can attach an external mic
Try using an external audio recorder. Zoom and others have compact devices.
Clap your hands at the beginning of the recording for the video and audio and syncing is easy in post.
I always enjoy your videos James, in terms of the vlog camera, I’d go with whichever one gives you the better audio.
Really nice video James. Def agree with your thoughts on photos about things and unresolved elements.
I too have the Sony ZV1 and was amazed at how poor the stabilisation is. Especially given what it's designed for! Must say I didn't notice it while watching but these things grate during editing I know. Just do whatever is easiest out there in the hills I'd say.
Cheers Paul, appreciate the feedback :)
Thanks for the video James! I like Gopro footage much more than Sony's.
Liked the gopro’s fov, stabilisation and general look more than the Sony, also would cut down on what you need to bring considering you’ll probably have the GoPro with you all the time for the chest mount
The views and your commentary are way more important than the quality of the video. Couldn't say there was any noticeable difference for me. "Now, where ARE my glasses." Hoping to visit Wales in June, holiday cottage booking from last year!
Honestly, both cameras were fine. The sound was definitely better in the initial set up, and the gopro was of course smoother. I didn't notice a "problem" with either until you mentioned it though.
Hi James, the GoPro is definitely better and the footage is way easier to watch. Great video as always, thank you.
great opening to the video James and nice presentation of your ideas.
well that was a nice opening shot.
Loved the opening drone shot going up as you climbed the steps! I have no opinions to add about the GoPro vs Sony, they both seem fine. Just different purposes it seems to me.
Great video subject....I always learn something new watching your content! Thanks and look forward to your continued work:-)
If you do get the MediaMod for the GoPro, also get an external mic, the one built in is less than ideal
Diggin the triadic tone in your studio James, it’s very you....
I Like the go pro! Pretty sure I saw you out on your bike today - My partner said I looked like I had just seen a celebrity
I use a "DJI Pocket 2 Creative Combo" for my videos. Ever tried that before? The gimbal is awesome. Really nice stabilization!
Ahh nice, I haven't - will take a look :)
Now that film could well prove useful to virtually everyone. It's very easy to take photographs for the sake of it, then we wonder why others don't share our enthusiasm! You often include people in your photos and it can make a huge difference especially in big vistas. The GoPro wins out in the stabilisation stakes by miles. Perfect colour coordination this time in your office! PS I think you have firmware updates for your camera! Cheers.
2 videos and a guest shot with Joe Allam, we are blessed. 👍💪⚡
when the bird showed up around 7:32 i was like "GET THE BIRD GET THE BIRD!!"
Super!
Very interesting and truly beautiful scenery. Keep it up and stay safe.
Enjoyed the video as I always do. I don’t think you can have much more tension in a shot than that soccer ball shot, lol.
Which Sony vlogging camera? Was image stabilization turned on? Was there a choice between just “on” and “active”?
There’s also tension in composition and I’d love to hear your take on that in a future video. Thanks for sharing this one.
GoPro. 👌🏼
Love that the pre-roll ad was for Gitzo! 😜
gopro image looked better to me - figure out the mic and you're golden :) Nice seeing you out and about again...
I think the GoPro is better unless you want to show the roughness of the terrain or similar. If you think the GoPro audio is poorer...you can always voice over parts in post 😀
I felt tension when you were calling out critics of your partnership with Lumix.. in other news amazing location in many ways similar to over here in Ireland
Hope the knee gets better soon James
It was interesting that you addressed the vlogging cameras you were using because throughout the main part of the video I was trying to figure out what you were using! I thought it couldn’t have been the g9 or S5 due to the fact the AF wasn’t hunting! And I thought the image was too nice to be a GoPro. So I’d say the Sony was better as I didn’t even notice the lack of stability to be honest. But then the GoPro held up well also...
So probably not much help there haha as they both looked fine!
That picture at 8:08 is so interesting! I find that the perfect example of a picture that draws attention.
The Goto is the GoPro based on the clips...easier on the eyes...
Bought myself a cell phone gimbal, and began wondering if maybe I should have just bought a gopro. I think used well shaky cam can add interesting elements to video. I wasn't put off by it especially on such a rocky terrain.
I have to say that the shakiness went well with the uneven rockiness of the location. It fit the environment and mood that way. However, the GoPro provides an overall better video record.
If I ever decide to actually have a website, that I have a worthwhile reason to have one, I will check out Squarespace. Thanks.
If you like really light and steady video try a DJI Pocket 2 maybe? The creator kit has the wireless mic with a deadcat and tiny tripod?

Tension = Attention
Feels like a simple formula.
Use premier Pro warp stabiliser plus the Sony!
Well now I'm tense about taking photos with tension. :p BTW: The ZV-1 stores gyro stabilization information, you might want to research using Catalyst Browse with your ZV-1.
Yep I recall some thing along those lines. You might want to check out Gordon Laing from camera labs, he does a vlog test with virtually every camera model he tests including medium format! Lol
stabilised GoPro although not as clean as the Sony camera, the stabiliser makes it a clear winner for me
Everytime I hear "Snowdonia" I imagine some actic wasteland...anyways great video as always! I honestly preferred the GoPro footage vs the Sony and the audio was good enough for me, I think with a small grip to get your hand a little out of the frame would make it pretty watchable.
The Sony has a much nicer image quality than the GoPro, but like you said the stabilization is rubbish. Overall I am not thrilled with the quality of either.
I liked the subject of your video and as always I learned something new.
Great video James. Never thought of tension in landscape photography before. At least not consciously.
non-shaky footage = good
good sound = good :)
Doesn't the gopro mic adapter work on your gopro?
I couldn’t tell the difference in the clips but when I watched again I think I couldn’t tell the difference. 🥂
I'll admit I'm not using top quality headphones whilst watch, so the sound difference between the Sony and GoPro seems minimal at arms length so I'd go with better stabilisation... for what it's worth :) 'nother great vid!
Really interesting, and helped to clarify something I felt has been missing from a lot of my photography. Thanks.
As for the video quality, stabilised is definitely better. You can always record your mic into a field recorder rather than the camera. Yeah it's another thing to carry but something like a Zoom H1N weighs almost nothing.
Hi James, personally I prefer the gopro footage. Can live with less than perfect audio (you are up a mountain....) but the stability really helps avoid distraction. The Sony vlog cam distracts me - always think you are going over! Great video - sometimes harder said than done but what we should aim for, for sure!
Cheers Tom, I'm definitely siding with the GoPro too! :)
@@JamesPopsysPhoto I think the Sony lens just isn’t wide enough for vlogging and while it may not weigh much - the GoPro or even your phone will be with you and do the job. Others have mentioned stabilising using catalyst but yet another step, probably not worth it…
thanks for this nice video full of tension :-), I like the video filmed with the GoPro the most
