Splash was the first attraction I worked on way back when as a new Imagineer. We programmed all the animatronics between October and Christmas of 1988 with about two days off total, one of them being Thanksgiving. We were working long hours in essentially a big rock sculpture with water flowing thru it, in the winter. Everyone at some point caught pneumonia. Just another day at the office at Imagineering!
It opened on July 17, 1989. It was originally scheduled to open In the Fall of 1988, but the ride system wouldn’t cooperate. The brakes didn’t stop the logs and would instead tip them up causing water to come into the logs from the back, sinking them. The logs and the brakes had to be completely redesigned. They had to scrap the entire original “fleet”!. So...eight months later, the ride worked and the attraction finally opened. The rest is history.
A big Thank You to all the guests for making it one of the most beloved attractions ever. The Tiana attraction will be great but we’ll always keep a special place in our “Disneyland memories” for Splash Mt.

Tiana's whatever won't hold a candle to splash mountain. It will be just another candy coated overly tame ride with no dark side to it. Will be fun once or twice for adults and younger kids will probably enjoy for more. Splash mountain was basically cherished by everyone all age groups and will live in our hearts forever . When Tiana's eventually shuts down , it won't get the fanfare that splash did that's for damn sure .

      @@judebarnes9209Yeah,
I will never understand how they gotta destroy Walt's work like that.
Although I love Tiana to death, I have to admit that I kinda hate that they chose ' The princess and the frog ' for the retheme.
Tiana's story is so bland compared to the other princesses, it just doesn't feel like a fairytale. The whole thing with the restaurant takes from the fairytale it's supposed to be.
That's at least what I noticed when I read all of my Disney Princess Little Golden Books.
Tiana's Definitely won't do what Splash has done, but it'll do something.

For those asking why we get emotional Because, it's the first real cornerstone ride to be closed/rethemed in recent memory (not including fireworks, stage shows and parades). The most recent one I would argue would be Submarine Voyage in 1998 became the Nemo Subs, and "Tarzans tree house" which isn't so much a ride. Disney for a lot of people have these rides and memories in our bones. We can be emotional saying goodbye to an attraction, and still be exited for the retheme. Some of us, like myself, are nervous that the attraction will lose the animatronics and switch to more screen based rides. Not to knock runaway railway, but there is something special about the animatronics and immersion that these amazing sets create. It's also a little sad if you're a Disney history buff and know those animatronics were repurposed from America Sings and know those animatronics have been in the park since 1974. It's goodbye to one of the big four.

The theme of Splash Mountain makes it a great ride. There is absolutely no reason to change it....

    • @Facilitate.Inform
      @Facilitate.Inform 6 місяців тому +1

The theme is based on Songs of the South, which perpetuates racial stereotypes and glamorizes the post civil war south, which even after emancipation still relied heavily on impoverished African American labor. The intent of the film was pure I'm sure, to dissole racial boundaries a promote a better "South" of racial harmony... but history has clearly betrayed that original intent ie: racist Jim Crow laws, KKK's, civil rights abuses, and today's still unresolved systemic racism/discrimination. For Disney to have themed Splash on Songs of the South in 1989 does show their tone deafness and lack of historical wisdom and foresight as to how it could be negatively perceived. Disney's just adapting to a changing, complex world, and being sensitive to fundamental social issues, to not be party to perpetuating false, harmful narratives. This is a good thing. It will be an even better, more exuberant ride.

@@tfperry21 that's fine, majorities aren't necessarily a good measure of truth though. People had an emotional attachment to the theming I get it... I'm just helping people understand the reasons WHY Disney made this change, and why Disney has integrity and ethic to do so, however unpopular. For all the fandom for Disney few seem to stick up for its humanitarian and moral principles which underly the parks/and films, and make it so special and critical a force in our afflicted world which is only getting worse. We take it for granted.

Yeah, i cried. I was 7 when Splash opened. I have so many memories of that ride. Lots of summer family trips when tickets were only $25 for zipcode locals. I went many times as an adult. Haven't been back in a few years for obvious reasons, but I'd like to. I love Disneyland so much. My father died when i was 13, so i don't have many memories of him. But i do remember Disney trips with him.
I'm totally fine with new things replacing old things. It's just the natural progression of time. I'm looking forward to the new Tiana area. I'm sure it'll be fun. But that doesn't mean I won't get emotional about a childhood ride disappearing. It was so iconic.
I know kids won't understand what their parents are feeling in regards to this old ride, but they will once they're our age and they have to watch their childhood things being replaced. Hell, kids won't even know the whole story behind Briar Rabbit and the racial controversy. Which is a good thing in a way, lol.
But yeah, this ride meant the world to us Californians. I'm an older millennial, but it would mean a lot to Gen X and Boomers, too.
To all Gen Z and Alpha who frequent Disney parks: if you have a favorite ride and love it to bits, imagine it being torn down right in front of you. That's how this feels for your parents and grandparents. 34 years of this iconic ride, kids. :)
I'll miss you, Splash Mountain. You'll forever be in my memories and, obviously, live on for eternity on UA-cam. 😆❤️

Sometimes Disneyland management leaves a lot to be desired. Anyway David, thanks for all your time today. Cheers, Chris Perry.

The characters riding the ride would've had to been setup beforehand with them getting on the ride at the bottom of the last lift hill which would've taken too long to lock out the ride. It would be cool but everyone would have left by then.

I’m looking at Splash right now. The walls are already up with a security CM patrolling them. Surprisingly, the water is still running… The secret path is still open. The Twain just went by and I heard part of the new spiel. Need to go ride it to hear the whole thing.
Edit: the spiel on the Twain has changed only by Tiana’s. It finally got rid of that terrible “splashing good time line”. The new lines even mentions that Tiana’s isn’t quite there yet, so it will change again when the ride reopens.
Another edit: the spiel on the train has been updated as well. In fact, it uses some of the exact same lines as the Twain.

Fresh Baked! I was part of the last log! Thank you for getting the drop from the front perspective! We purposely screamed so loud after the drop cause it was so exciting ans the last drop needed to go out with some noise and in hopes it would identify that was the last one with guests! I can hear our scream after the drop and you making a comment on that. 🙈🤗

Oh awesome, David!! So glad you got to ride that last ride and take "Fancy Cam" with you! Great footage as one final homage to "Splash." I could really feel the excitement you all felt with the energy of the crowd and seeing the other vloggers around! I'm looking forward to the next adventure for this attraction. Unlike some, I'm an old-timer and grew up with "America Sings" (and still see the songs those critters sang in with your vlog!), so I never really developed an emotional attachment to Splash. Great ride, great characters, great music; hoping the new one will have great characters, new effects and great music as well. Thanks for taking us along! 😀

while i was in the single rides line for the last day, i met this really cool girl who came from san jose just to ride splash mountain all day and was worried that she wasted her time since the line was becoming longer and didn’t think she’d get too many more rides in. i spent some time convincing her that it was going to be fun and she was excited for her disney day and was telling me about it. i saw her in line a few more times and we would wave to each other and say hi and chat every time we passed each other in line. i wish i got her name or something, she was so much fun!

I LOVE hearing people’s reactions when they’re getting soaked; I’ve heard so many different reactions and they’re always hilarious. I remember when I was in middle school, I was in line for Splash Mt. exactly where you started your queue in the standby. A girl sat on those wooden handrails and it broke sending her and the whole row of railing down with her. She was so embarrassed. Her face was red as a tomato. Cast member came over and she was not happy. Lol.
    I'll miss Splash.
