  • I discovered Theaster's work though his connection to Japan and the Mingei movement. Theaster is an accomplished potter and learned pottery in Tokoname Japan, but his art cannot be defined by one medium. Theaster's main works are on a much larger scale, where he concentrates on the regeneration of cities by reusing waste materials to redevelop unused buildings into spaces to be used. His current exhibition at Mori Art Museum in Tokyo moved me so much that I had to talk about it. I want people to see what he has made and what he has done for communities around the world. Theaster celebrates his African American roots and the connections he has made in Japan in this exhibition. His work show his spiritual connection to the people who have made him and taught him. As I consider how I can make meaningful connections and build communities through my art I will continue to look to him for inspiration. I hope you enjoy this short video about this wonderful exhibition and go and see it for yourself.
