The Biophilic Movement, Biophilic Design in Japan, Creating Biophilic Experiences
This video encompasses my hopes and thoughts for a movement in art and design that isn’t just classed as contemporary, but in which we come back to using our five senses and experiencing our natural world in all aspects of our lives.
This is the first longer format video in which I have created all aspects, including the background music. In this video you can hear glass bells, a baby harp and a song thrush. I hope to create an overall relaxing space where we can think about art and how it can benefit our lives. This is my first time creating music, so bear with me as I find my way. I believe it is part of my journey to using all of my senses artistically.
Some thoughts that go with this video
Breath,
Feel the textures of your environment,
Sit in silence and listen,
Bathe in the colours of the sky,
Appreciate your favourite beverage,
Be nothing,
Be everything.

I am a Scottish ceramic artist based in Shonan Kamakura. Theaster Gates, Creating Communities Through Art

I discovered Theaster's work though his connection to Japan and the Mingei movement. Theaster is an accomplished potter and learned pottery in Tokoname Japan, but his art cannot be defined by one medium. Theaster's main works are on a much larger scale, where he concentrates on the regeneration of cities by reusing waste materials to redevelop unused buildings into spaces to be used. His curren...

Handmade Ceramics Brand Ocean Ridge Kiln Introduction
Please pull back on the music volume, it’s distracting from you talking and hard to hear you.
Thank you for you feedback. Sometimes it is hard for me to judge volume in the editing process
@@OceanRidgeKiln thanks! I’ve heard much worse on UA-cam, but this video of yours definitely was just at that edge where I found it hard to concentrate on what you were saying. Love the content though!
Lovely thoughtful video, thank you. You have understood one of life’s secrets, which is how to help other people.
Thank you Mark. I appreciate your comment.
i am so gratedul i landed here. thanks so much for making this for us
I am glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching! 💕
The levels of beauty in this short video are inspiring. The deep inward reflection expressed vocally is simply golden. Your chosen visual elements are breathtaking--I had to pause the video often just to admire the scenes. I am your dad's age and without knowing him think he would be so proud. You're doing it, you're living the life, keep going!
To receive words like this about my video makes its creation worthwhile. Thank you so much for connecting with me and for your support.
Beautiful!
Thank you so much Linda!
Beautiful!
Thank you! 💕
Hi, lovely work, Thanks for sharing. Could you please tell me what is the glaze or underglaze that you used in the white and green plates?
Thank you! I use a iron oxide wash to pick out the details and top with a crackle glaze that has a greenish blue hue. I don’t make my own glazes yet as I’m having too much fun experimenting with what is available here in Japan. Hope that helps.
Thank you for the insights you have given in this vidro. I found you by accident... I am at the beginning of the same journey here in Germany, now that I am free from family commitments.... I am also self-taught in recent years and I find your work amazing! My interest and inspiration is exactly in the same direction as yours. That's why you are very encouraging for me.
Thank you so much! I hope to make lots more inspiration videos this year that might be of interest to you. Please feel free to message me on instagram or email if you have any questions or want to chat. 💕
Great video! I really appreciate the close ups and the slow pace and the focus on the wonderful Japanese antiques. You could have held my attention for hours. More, please!
Thank you! I will definitely be posting more of these in the new year! My main focus is pottery and art inspired by nature or using natural materials.
Ohisashiburi my friend! Hope your doing well. This was a gorgeous video. Perhaps we can do a catch up call before Christmas. Glad to see your still chipping away at it 😊
Hey Luke, thank you! Definitely up for a catch up. It’s been a difficult year but here’s hoping next year I will be able to be more productive. Hope you are doing well!
What a beautiful video! Your pottery is so textural and unique. I recently lost my pottery studio to hurricane Helene in SC, USA. It was a very sad day, but I am rebuilding and improving what I had. I have learned so much from you watching your videos. Thank you for sharing. .... And your Japanese is amazing!!
I’m so sorry to hear that. So many people have lost their homes and livelihoods, it is so sad. I’m glad you are safe though. I hope the rebuild goes smoothly and the space turns out better than ever. You are so incredibly kind to say such lovely things on my videos. I really can’t thank you enough. Your comments push me to keep going. I hope I can do the same for you through my videos. I would love to see your work and stay connected. 💕
Love your pieces and glazes. Do you make your own glazes or are they commercial? ❤
Thank you so much! Japan has a wonderful history of ceramics and a wealth of supplies. I haven’t felt the need to make my own yet but will do once I get more into wood firing I expect.
you are amazing, keep going <3
Thank you Sasha! Trying to pick myself up and keep creating. 💕
I’d love to see a video about your firing process :-).
Unfortunately my firing process is not very interesting as I use an electric kiln. I plan to learn and practice wood firing more in the future which I think will be a lot more interesting than pushing a button
@ I think that you use electric is interesting in itself, you get some very nice glaze effects. I just set up a new studio and after a lot of thought I went full electric, but now I’m trying to figure out how to make the glazes a bit less predictable. I really like electric though and think it is wonderful and would never go back to gas or wood fired ;-).
@HenryBurlingameIII thank you! My aim is to have interest with each glaze I use. I love the effects wood firing has. I choose glazes that already have variations in colour depending on the thickness in application, then because I like the meditative painting process I enjoy applying it with a brush by hand. This means I can control the thickness with less glaze around textures so the details are not lost and more where glazes are needed for functionality. I have shown glazing processes in other videos. A clear glaze and stains to brushed into details is another of my go to for me. I hope that helps! Keep experimenting!
Thank you very much!❤️
thank you for sharing this. super inspirational... Looking forward to seeing where the cultural hybridity "permission" Theaster Gates' work gives you takes your own work
Thank you! Whatever I do it will be an expression of me and what inspires me. Thank you for watching.
Amazing! 👏👏👏
The time I spent visiting Charleston and Monk’s House (Virginia Woolf's home) was one the best weekends of my life. The two houses are so inspiring. Thank you for sparking so many happy memories.
Sounds fantastic. I love seeing creative lives depicted in everyday objects. They really made everything art.
looking for some tips for an upcoming trip - whats the best antiquing area in tokyo.and oskaka? our trip is still fluid so welcome other locations as well....thanks in advance!
I like going to antique markets and shops near me in Kamakura mostly and sometimes in Tokyo. I have made a Kamakura video which details some of the places I like. There is a regular flea market at Ohi Racecourse in Tokyo. I love the shop Antique Yamamoto Shoten near Yoyogi Uehara. There are so many places! The best thing is to search in Japanese on google maps for shops and google search for markets running on the days you are here. Have a great time!
Gorgeous if you understand the thought process behind the creation
This week I am practicing keeping the form in. And doing a undercut.😊
Let me know how you get on. 🙂
I like the organic nature of your work
Thank you so much! ❤️
I have tried to imagine a Mug. On the pottery wheel it turns 🛞 out closer to a bowl 🍜 form. I guess 🧐 I may end up only producing 🥣 bowls
Throwing on the wheel for me is a practice in being still. Try focusing on pull up and inward first and then you can open up to where you want. After a while you will be throwing whatever you want. 💕
Where can I find a similar rolling pin?
This is a very cheap rolling pin. I believe you can find handleless rolling pins in Daiso.
It was very satisfying and relaxing to see your beautiful video. I hope you make more good finds in the Japanese Flea Markets. Jouko from Sweden
Thank you! I love seeing the way things used to be made. Thank you for for watching.
love your comments on the subjects.
I really love this texture that you made. Thank you for showing step by step process

I'm making a video on the Ainu People and Rev. John Bacthelor. I find that Ainu, being descendants of Jomon, have a lot of common! Beliefs, and genes. Like having facial genes from Europeans, heavily related to ancient Asians. As well as their beliefs. Can I cite your video? Thank you.
Yes of course. I love the pottery and that is really the reason for me making this video. Thank you for watching.
@@OceanRidgeKiln Script is finally done and recording should follow shortly as well as editing. Say, what brought you to Japanese pottery? More specificity, Ainu and Jomon?
@Turkmen2005 it is very hard to ignore all the different kinds of pottery in Japan. I quickly became fascinated by the history and especially fell in love with Momoyama period pottery and pieces used in the Japanese tea ceremony. In my investigations I saw Jomon pottery as the origins of pottery in Japan and pottery from China and Korea brought about extreme diversity. I was so taken by the intricate patterns of Jomon pottery and how unique it is. There is something very magical about the very 3D nature of the pieces. At first they look abstract but then you start to see symbols of nature and the life these people led. I myself love nature and use it as inspiration for my own work and through my videos I explore art that uses nature as its muse.
Excellent content, Laura. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you for watching and reaching out! I really appreciate it.
Pearson-san, Many thanks for video program. Of course the best way to make 茶碗 (chawan) is not to think while we make it. Hard to get to that point, though. Many years and much clay! 宜しくお願いします。
I think repetitive processes can lead to this state of mind. There are endless possibilities with clay. 💕
Oh, I can't wait to see your new collection!!! I think I am going to have to have one if they are available for purchase? This one is just exquisite.
Thank you Nancy! Hope you are doing well. Yes the pieces will be available to ship worldwide if purchased directly through my website. 💕
The 2 color combo is so pretty!
Thank you so much!
I cant stand their middle class woke socialism but i like the visual art
“Middle class woke socialism”?! Seriously? 😂
Lol.
I collect ceramics, him, kwai and Hamada are my favorite Japanese Mashiko potters.
thank you for this.
Whom wrote your script?
These videos are all written, filmed and edited by myself. Really it is a conversation with myself to solidify my learning and document my journey. I hope others can relate to my experiences and be inspired to find their own inspirations to create from a personal and meaningful place.
Sales is no barometer for success, as long as you have enjoyed your spiritual journey is the best way.
I believe this is true, and making connections through our art is an important part of the journey.
I am interested in Art that teaches us about life and ourselves and getting used to our imperfections. It is the imperfections that is Art. Pottery can never be perfect because it is created through imperfect people. Your pieces is a reflection of this belief.
Thank you so much! I think we are all surrounded by soulless mass produced items and my work is a reaction to that. I want to bring nature into peoples homes and create strong connections between ourselves and our belongings that serve our daily routines and rituals.
Thank you for sharing your spirit with us through your Art
Thank you for being here and interacting. I hope this space can be a place for a conversation and a support network.
Beautiful work!!!
Thank you so much! 💕
Thank you for sharing, its very insightful video. Can you please also share more on the glazing process that suits this style
Thank you so much! I use a variety of Japanese glazes and clays but do not follow the methods used by actual Raku masters. My pieces are all stoneware. Raku bowls are fired at lower temperatures using lower temperature glazes. My go to methods for textured teabowls are simply a clear glaze with iron oxide to bring out the texture or black on black clay. I enjoy the process of hand painting my glazes so I try to use ones that I can do that with. I would say experiment with what you have available to you but often simple is the best way to go.
@@OceanRidgeKiln Thank you so much! Will definitly give them a go.
Beautiful
Thank you!
Nice presentation. Rosanjin was indeed a very interesting and inspiring man and artist. If you are not already familiar with the life of Ōtagaki Rengetsu (大田垣 蓮月), I highly recommend finding out about her, as she had also had a fascinating life and created very inspiring pieces of great originality and beauty.
Thank you so much! I have written about Otagaki Rengetsu but I haven’t yet put together a video. She is a big inspiration for me. I definitely plan to make one on her.
I love this wonderful museum like but what the background music
Thank you for making this video about my favorite style of pottery. I too fell in love with the philosophy of Mingei and the pots made in this style. I've been making pots for 57 years, trying to be simple enough to make work as good as these.
Glad you enjoyed it. I don’t know if my own works falls into this category but I do love the mingei style overall. Living in Japan it can be seen in interior design and there are many exhibitions right now making it a very popular idea and style. It is interesting to see.
@@OceanRidgeKiln Yes, I'm sure my pots wouldn't ever be labeled Mingei, but I hope people can see it as an influence in them. Are any of the current Mingei exhibitions available online?
@dottiebaker6623 the events and exhibitions I talk about are not online because they are currently showing but the Mingeikan has some great pieces from their collection up on their website mingeikan.or.jp . One recent exhibition I saw was Afro Mingei by Theaster Gates. There is also an exhibition currently at the Setagaya art museum. Have a look also at Mogi shop and Beams Fennica for actual shops selling Mingei products.
@@OceanRidgeKiln Thank you so much!
thank you, this will be added to my inspiring pottery videos (I'm from New Zealand)
Thank you Joyce! Glad you enjoyed it!
A lovely video Laura. I'd not heard of Rosanjin before watching this, but you've inspired me to find out more his work.
Awesome! I recommend the book I flick through at the end. I think it shows how varied his work was. He had a very modern approach to traditional techniques. The book is Kitaoji Rosanjin: A Revolutionary in the Art of Japanese Cuisine.
Thank you. I’ll check it out. Always love a book recommendation 🙌☺️
