      It seems the response to greater competition and slower sales is increased price per pint, gallon or keg. It's not sustainable. It's pushing people away from pubs, taprooms and beer bars and into packaged beer consumed at home.

      Well, they always had a state commision and tax for alcohols, so like 30 dollar bottles were 45 up there. 25% increase i guess. But then beer had a much lower tax, but they were talking about increasing it in 2011. Maybe it happened. But back then it was like3-5 for a pint. Shit, some strip club had anything for $2 during happy hour. No cover fee either, or if there was it was like 5 bucks. Didnt even have to tip the girls.

      People who keep saying this need to get a life. There are cities that have low moments all over the country. Portland has complex issues. The big idea was that the customer was getting something handmade, special and unique, in an upscale setting. They got greedy and priced themselves right out the general, walk by market. Then the virus/lockdown killed off what little was left of their customer base. Most of their beers tasted terrible anyway and the burgers were the exact same slack attempts at all of them.

    • @jonathanweir6084
      @jonathanweir6084 8 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, for those that dont know the customer service in portland is extremely bad. People talking making average food but pricing it high, wait staff that will act so superficial and like you are not worth their time and then call you names for tipping only 15%. Owners taking all the tips and paying it out in paychecks so they can steal some because it is too hard to figure it out between the large wait staff they dont totally need and the deductions from your pay. Lived there in the 2010's when it was a place people were moving to because san francisco was too expensive. Was way different then, not much violent crime. But even before 2020 i heard it was really getting bad I heard. Like in 2018 the police were quitting because the mayor didnt support them.

    Yeah tastes change, I remember when Hipsters and rich college snob kids would buy Pabst blue ribbon beer because it was a trendy thing to go slumming and seen drinking this beer meant for the lower working class , around that same time the younger drinkers were in on that nasty tasting IPA beer as a cool thing, it only lasted a while because of the stigma that if you didn't like IPA beer you had a unrefined pallet and not sophisticated enough to enjoy it, then it faded away as people realized it sucked no matter what somebody else said

  • @pdxtomct
    @pdxtomct 9 місяців тому +5

    Decent story that lacks depth. Yes, we've lost some breweries. And there will be more. One of the big problems is that consumer tastes have shifted away from draft to packaged beer. The pandemic accelerated that trend, but it was already underway prior to 2020. Draft beer (cider, too) is fairly profitable when sold directly to consumers in a pub or brewery (or cidery). Packaged product isn't nearly as profitable because there are a lot of additional costs. The ongoing collapse of draft has really hurt small breweries, which depended on direct sales and can't afford the cost of packaging and distribution. This development has been documented in the beer media and should have been mentioned by someone in this story.

    Here in the Seattle area, I see pints going for $8.25. Now a pint in the US is typically 14 ounces, not 16. I love my craft beers, but I can go to the store, and buy canned cocktails with 2 shots of liquor and around 12 to 14 percent alcohol for about $5 a can. And the only reason they're $5 a can is the local liquor tax . So why is beer so expensive? At $8.25 for 14 ounces, we're at about 59 cents an ounce, and the canned cocktail at $5 for a 12 ounce can is less than 42 cents an ounce. And again the canned cocktail can be 12 to 14% ABV. I feel that perhaps breweries have gotten a little too greedy.
