@@redrick8900 he was in hospital I’m pretty sure at the time of the show. And he wouldn’t have been able to really recommend any other drummers given there were only a few there who knew Metallica’s material well enough

Yeah Joey is one of the best drummers ever in my opinion! It’s not about technical abilities or anything like that even though Joey can play technical and with precision but he’s the best imo because of the drum parts he comes up with!
1. There is no best drummer. 2. If there WAS a best drummer it wouldn't be Joey or Dave, lol. Expand your horizon.

Put Bill Ward, John Bonham, Niel Peart, Alex Van Halen and Danny Carry all on that list just for being the talented pioneers they were. They each dominated their era which makes them the greatest.
Rob, Lars, and the rest of Metallica know Dave and Joey are better drummers.
But they are better off in slayer and slipknot respectively than Metallica

We should not forget that Lars created the drums on Metallica's songs, including the starting days of trash metal, no one told him how to do that, yet, no one seem to give him credit for this.

It’s funny laughing at Lars being uncomfortable, but he did however do these song justice long ago. :) nowadays he’s not his former self, but it could be the way that he’s setting stuff up. He can improve just by making a few adjustments.
Lars is in excruciating pain & discomfort KNOWING everyone in "his" band enjoyed the sh*t out of playing with Dave & sounded way better...and far more hardcore.
I always thought Lombardo was an obvious choice. But Jimmy DeGrasso would work even better with Rob on bass (see: Suicidal For Life). Add Zakk Wylde on lead (sorry Kirk) and you have the Metallica James always wanted. And a badass biker gang.
Zakk Wylde is a God, but he would sound terrible with Metallica. I don't think anyone wants to hear a pinch harmonic every 5th note of Master of Puppets.
