If I Can Dream was written by W. Earl Brown as a request by Elvis in response to the assassinations of MLK and Robert Kennedy, in 1968.
Producer Steve Binder says that Elvis passed out after the 5th take because of the emotion he put into the song.
The song was released as a single - b/w Edge of Reality - peaking at #12 on Billboard.
The Comeback Special was filmed between June 24-30, 1968 and released in NBC-TV on December 4, 1968

Wow! You've discovered Elvis! He performed this song in 1968; and, sadly, it's still relevant today. If you choose to delve into his music and his life, you'll find that he was truly one of a kind. He recorded over 700 songs in all different genres so there's a lot to explore.

Keep in mind that this is a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. and Dr. King was murdered 15 minutes from Graceland, Elvis’ home. That added to the agony of Elvis Presley’s heartache of King’s assassination!

The song was not only inspired by MLK but by Robert Kennedy's assassination also -- it was after Kennedy's assassination that Elvis & producer/director Steve Binder had a long sit-down discussion, & Binder asked songwriter Walter Earl Brown to compose a song to reflect what had taken place (based on MLK's speech). Parker wanted a Christmas song (of course) but after Elvis looked at the song sheet he told Parker i want to give it a shot.

@Vee Onoja This song was written by Walter Earl Brown. Walter Earl Brown was inspired to write this song because of two key things: Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a dream" speech & Elvis's own expressed sentiments on what was going on (in America) at that time.
It is most definitely a song that everyone can relate to & Elvis's performance elevated the song all the more.
It is both a song and a performance that will ensure generation after generation.
Thank you for giving this song & Elvis a listen.
You should also check out Elvis "How Great Thou Art" live 1972 & "Bridge Over Troubled Water" live 1970 Las Vegas (New Mix Great Sound!)

@@carolhayar3037 I know the story in full. I prefer to keep it short and sweet because the full story is a much more in depth and lengthier one.
Also: Not everyone in the world know American history or politics. The majority of Americans know who MLK was and why he was/ is still an important historical Civil Rights leader to this day.
To go into the fuller story would mean to go into fuller history of the Civil Rights movement and the racial tensions at that time in America.
It would also mean going more in- depth about who The Kennedy family was and who JFK was and who RFK was and the story of both of their separate assassinations.
Again, not everyone in the world is aware of or taught American history and politics.
But thank you for providing the additional information.

Elvis is singing from the very depths of his Bowles. These lyrics mean so much to Elvis. He Elvis said " if you can't speak it than you sing it"!++ Praise Jesus for Elvis.
