This performance always blows me away. I was a very young child when dr. King got assassinated and yes we had already had a president and his brother be assassinated but apparently when Elvis first got the news, he was on the set of a movie they were filming and they had to shut down production for a day because he went into a back room and just cried and cried and curled up into a ball. You can hear the pain and agony in his voice. And I loved your point about how he was crying inside but roaring like a tiger outside. As someone who has sung in front of audiences so many times before, it is so very difficult to sing if you get choked up with emotion but somehow he managed to walk that tightrope. What a message that still resonates all these decades later.

@@mikem957 you say from 1968 onwards. What was wrong with him saying or doing anything prior to the year 1968? Was it because they were chasing the white dollar and once they had the white dollar, they figured, lets chase the black dollar. So they made a nice propaganda video about Elvis and the black community. We will get a whole lot of black musicians to say some nice things about him, because we know the black man will never disrespect a white man, will he? After all he knows the consequences,
"what's that hanging from a neighbors tree? why it looks like colored folk to me!
And prior to 1968 it is well documented Elvis only used white musicians.
Now Mike Mikesell, pay very close attention again here Mike Mikesell.
I have never hated on Elvis.
You are just like the rest of the Elvis fans.
The moment someone comes along who doesn't agree with the comments foolish people make about Elvis, you either go the hate card or the racial card. You have proven this again to me, thanks. You drew the dislike card, same as hate.
Perhaps if you Elvis fans had the ability to read something and fully understand it perhaps you all wouldn't need to carry a gun for protection. Are you aware of how many Elvis fans have commented things like, If only Elvis stood up to the colonel!
More than you have had a roast lunch.
Bottom line is this Mike Mikesell.
I have never said Elvis didn't have a good voice, wasn't aa good looking guy, and, was not a good entertainer. NEVER!!!!
I have said, and I will stand by my comments, Elvis was a puppet.
Sure he went against the colonel on a couple of occasions. If only he had the balls to do it earlier. But he was afraid.
I actually feel sorry for the poor bastard.
All the writers stopped writing for Elvis because the colonel wanted 50% of the rites to any song Elvis sang. Can you imagine doing the same show night after night with no new material? No wonder he used drugs! I hope the above comment helps you.

Colonel Thom Parker, his manager promotor, told him to stay away from songs that would be contravercial or political. He forbade him to do this song on his 1968 Comeback Special. Elvis felt so strongly about it being included in the show, he did it anyway.
He also did a similar thing when he recorded "In the Ghetto". This was not usual for him to not honor Colonel Parker's wishes / orders. Elvis was the real deal. American, true "Rags to Riches" story.

Some corrections needed here. This song was written and performed for Dr Martin Luther King. After Elvis agreed to do this song, against the wishes of NBC Studios (due to the race riots and unrest) RFK was assassinated, the SECOND KENNEDY publicly assassinated in the same decade.. So this song was dedicated to MLK and Robert Kennedy and recognizes the ENTIRE DECADE of unrest, violence, racial strife and various major controversial news items of the day... Vietnam War, sexual revolution... all the things pulling Americans apart. This song was reminiscent of the entire decade of violence and pain, and it directly and effectively spoke to the nation better than any political speech ever could. Sadly VERY relevant today -- as if it were sung today. So you were right this is a clear personal dedication to Dr Martin Luther King, but the song had ADDITIONAL MEANING due to everything else going on at that time, even WORSE than today, if you could imagine. Only Elvis could have pulled off a song like this, and given it the power it STILL HOLDS TODAY to anyone who listens to it. Perhaps the greatest social justice songs ever written or performed.

This is the story of how “If I Can Dream” was written from Steve Binder, the director of Elvis’ ’68 TV special for which the song was written.
“One night when we were rehearsing, the television set was on the other room and all of a sudden there was this moment of silence. And I said, 'I think Bobby Kennedys just been shot'. And we all rushed into the other office and that's exactly what happened. They had live at the Ambassador Hotel, Kennedy making his speech. We were in the piano room at the time, but there was just something weird that evening and I just sensed something had gone wrong. Then we spent the whole night basically talking about the Kennedy assassination, of both Bobby and John.
And, Elvis basically had in those moments of pure honesty, had been saying things that I felt we should say on the air in the special. So I went to Earl Brown, our special material writer and choral director, and to Billy Goldenberg and I asked them to … go home and write a song about the philosophy of what I was hearing from Elvis personally. That, you know, we're all created equal. We're all deserve to walk hand in hand with our brothers, and all that stuff.
And, one morning, very early in the morning, I got a phone call from Earl Brown saying 'I think we did it. I think you've got your song'. And so we rushed down to the studio to hear it and Billy Goldenberg played piano and Earl sang 'If I Can Dream'. And I said 'Well let's wait till Elvis shows up and we'll play it for him'. In the meantime Colonel Parker was saying over my dead body 'Are we gonna play that as the last song of the show?' And I waited for Elvis and Elvis came into the dressing room.
And we played 'If I Can Dream' for Elvis and Elvis listened to it. He said 'Play it again'. So we went through it again and Elvis said, 'Which I had become accustomed to'. When Elvis was really making decisions he didn't just want to make rash fast decisions. He wanted to, you know, absorb it and hear it over and over. He had Billy and Earl play this song I would say three or four times. And he looked at me and said, 'Okay I'll do it'.“

The song was influenced by Dr. King's I Have A Dream speech and in honor of him after being assassinated a couple months earlier. Producer Steve Binder has stated that all Elvis wanted to talk about was Dr. King's death and how it affected him. Earl Brown who wrote the song said that Elvis told him what he was feeling inside and that Brown then put it to words and arrangement overnight. They had 24 hours to write, produce and record the masterpiece.

Within a short span of time, Dr. King and Robert Kennedy were assassinated. Dr. King in April '68 and Bobby Kennedy in June '68. It was Elvis reaction of Kennedy's assassination that lead to the creation of the song "If I Can Dream" and a tribute song to King, featuring quotes from the Civil Rights Leader. After seeing the news about Kennedy's death on TV, Elvis spent an entire night with the show's director, Steve Binder, and his friends talking about the assassinations and Elvis' wishes for the world. The conversation was heartfelt and honest and Binder believed Elvis had an important message for the country. Binder went to Director Goldenberg and Earl Brown and told them about the discussion. He wanted a powerful and meaningful song that would close out the show instead of a Christmas song. But Binder had other plans.......it wasn't long before "If I Can Dream" was born.

B. Filme, Bücher, Shows, Charaktere usw.)! Ich werde weiterhin ein Elvis Presley-Fan sein, aber gelegentlich höre ich auch Musik von anderen Sängern und Musikgruppen! 🎼🎙🎸

...and, to make it more of his heart being in it...MLKjr was killed about 12 miles from Graceland! so, Elvis had the(unfortunate)connection to his hometown.

I don't know if is still avalable on You tube, but there is still a BETTER VIDEO of this song...the same concert....but showing public reactions, members of the band, one woman in public with tears in her eyes , and the chorus with one sweet young afro-american girl keep on smileing while she is singing !!!
