- 2020 BMW X3 M40i Exhaust Flap Fuse Removal to keep the dual exhaust open at all times tutorial.
Please do this at your own risk.
Easily reversible.
The purpose is to make your start up a little bit more aggressive sounding with dual exhaust pipes open, and as well as driving in other modes besides Sport + or under heavy acceleration.
This does NOT throw a CEL.

Have the same vehicle and went to setting and was able to have the exhaust sound change to sport for the louder sound.
That turns on the internal fake sound through the speakers. And the exhaust flaps only opens more on hard throttle. This keeps the flaps open all the time no matter what mode youre in.
I am so trying this free trick. Especially that it can be done in under 10. The wife will never know. Shhhhh.
I don't understand what the point of this is... just press the sport button and both of your flaps are open instantaneously. Why would you want to remove the ability to make exhaust quieter???
I don’t think this is true - even in sport the left flap only opens when the cat is hot enough
@@Gordofilms7 I didn't notice that maybe you should put it in the sport+ mode. Also, maybe it's to protect the engine...
2 reasons for this. The option in the iDrive uses ASD which is a fake sound in your cabin pumped in through the speaker. And the exhaust flaps will only open in Sport or Sport + mode under full throttle. Removing the fuse is real exhaust sound and the flaps are open no matter which mode youre in or if youre just barely giving it any gas.
@@mapletree4283 it's for emissions, free flowing exhaust specially turbo can only improve performance/reliability downside is higher emissions/sound
Thanks man ! Very helpful 🤙🏻
Sam VanHeukelom Glad it helped.
Does this work for my 2016 (f26) X4 M40i ? If it does it will be amazing, you already know how amazing that m2 engine sounds
Just did this mod. Part of the reason is because I seen an x3m’s exhaust have both sides open lol
Awesome. Glad it helped.
Heard the 2021 model has reduced crackles and pops. Did anyone with 2021 do this and notice any improvement in the crackles and pops?
Yeah stock 2021 is even quieter.
I am going to try this tomorrow. I have a 2021 and can confirm the stock exhaust is much quieter
How did it work for the 2021?
@@kevinmarinellie306 it definitely does work!
Just subscribed just to follow up on what other little tricks you find lol. Thanks
LOL same for me. Good stuff
Yeah please keep them coming!!!
Hey guy. Thank you for your share of this video. But I have a question. Could it damage the circuit board?
Thanks. It is just a fuse so its easy but everything should be done at your own risk.
I’ve had my fuse pulled since Jan 2018 but just recently I’m getting CEL.... codes 138102, 13820A, 13820B ....BimmerLink will NOT clear the codes....can anyone help?

@@Gspeed35x Does the x3 m40i and the x3 35i have the same engine?
@@thedoor4807 I dont think there is a X3 35. But a 30i. Thats a 4 cyl. The M40i has a V6 turbo.
@@Gspeed35x you mean in line 6
Any updates on this mod? I saw someone said they got a CEL after removing the fuse. I have a 30i 2019 and would look to try this
It did on my '20 750. Seeing as the car is under warranty I have an appointment with the dealer to see if thats really the problem.
What update are you looking for? I have it pulled out still sevaral years later. You need to make sure you have the HK system and this is for the M40i you probably have a different fuse box in your 30i. Thanks.
the frist 3 second when i just starup the left was opend, can i do it at that time ?
袁吉帅 Yup. Should work. Try it. It’s completely reversible.
Think there's an option on the screen. To keep sport exhaust on all the time. Mine sounds like that everyday in comfort even.
Mine's Canadian version and there's no such a function... where should it be?
@@mapletree4283 keep in mind I have a 2020.. it gos...car...settings...general settings...engine sound...the options are... depending on driving mode...sporty(on all the time)..balanced...or reduced..
@@milehigh3054 That is for the ASD which is the fake engine sound in your speakers not the actual exhaust option sound.
@@Gspeed35x think my neighbors would disagree . 😆
@@Gspeed35x I have a 2021 and when you use the iDrive settings you can literally hear the flaps open and close. Not sure if the older models have this or not. I also don't hear additional exhaust pumping through the speakers at all. In comfort its quiet with one flap open, and in Sport Plus its wide open.
Hey man Really Nice Video👌🏻👌🏻! I had a question would this work on a G01 or only the M package?
The Bawazir Brothers Thank! This should work on all G01 and F97. M Performance only has a louder exhaust. A regular 30i will have the valve open to be a little louder too.
Thank you 🙏 I’m Going to subscribe to your channel
Gspeed 35x Hi, I have tried it and it works to perfection. However, after go back to the dealership, they had reinstalled the fuse for me. I have since then try to remove the fuse like the first time, but this time it doesn't seems to work.... To make matter worse, it makes my sport plus mode sounds like the confort mode now, only the popping sounds remain. Its like the exhaust has a congested nose. You know how I can fix this? Thanks alot
@@cyrusau9949 You need to make sure the flap is open first. So you need to drive it hard to have it fully open.
@@cyrusau9949 start the car, put it in sport plus mode, tap the gas so the flap opens, then you can remove the fuse. Therefore the flap is stuck open. You probbaly pulled it while the flap was closed, so now the flap remains closed
why? there is a sound setting for each mode. You can set it to sport sound to comfort mode. Just a few clicks...
Not true. OEM Sport mode only opens the exhaust flaps fully under WOT. This keeps it open all the time no matter your RPM.
@@Gspeed35x thanks for the detail!
Can’t see the vapors from driver side.
Hey have you ever tried disabling the ASD pulling out the F218 fuse?
What is ASD
Is it just me or are the gears held in gear while In sport & sport +
Yea correct Sport holds gears a bit versus Comfort. And Sport+ holds it a lot longer. Thats why never drive Sport+ Auto. Only use it for racing when using Launch Control. The rest is using paddle shifters in Manual.
I have a x5 i40 2019, does it work as well?, just wandering if the fuse box and number are the same, thanks
No idea it should be a similar process but you should check your fuse box and locations.
I used to have a 2019 X5 40i but I used this app called BimmerLink with my OBD to open the valves then go under the car and unplug it
Hey man, what engine do you have? I love the sound. I have 2022 BMW X3 30I and I want to make it sound aggressive.
This is B58 TU. 3.0L V6 Turbo.
@@Gspeed35x It’s a straight 6 😂. not a v6
6 Cylinder. Aka Inline 6. I always call it a V6, no point getting that technical in this case but sure.
@@Gspeed35x well calling it a v6 is just wrong. Especially to a brand which is famous for its inline 6 cylinders.
@@Gspeed35xbro it's a completely different design being straight as opposed to v with countless different characteristics.
Will this work on 2022 bmw x3 xdrive30i?
It should as long as you have the Harmon Kardon audio system. If you do you can try it and you can go back to "stock" by plugging the fuse back in.
I have an X3M I wanna do this but how can I reverse it when I need to bring it back to the dealership?
Danny Cohen Put the fuse back in. Or literally the dealership will put one back in for you. Lol if you forget. It happened. No charge.
Gspeed 35x ok but I don’t need to have it on sport plus? It will just
Or just put the fuse in and the flaps will go back to normal ?
Danny Cohen Yes. Put the fuse back. And shut off car. And turn on again and its back to regular programming.
Gspeed 35x cool. I don’t need to drive the car right just have it running until it’s up to temperature?
Hey man nice video. Just wanted to know if the mhd tune is working fine with your 2020. Also if i flash stage 1 do i still need to remove the fuse to keep the flaps open or does the mhd tune does this for you? Thank you.
Mohit Arora Yes you would need to remove the fuse if you want to keep the flaps open in all driving modes. MHD is still in BETA no public release date yet, and you can adjust the burbles with the MHD. Or if you have a down pipe you can set a the cold start to be quieter. That is what I will do when I buy mine ER DP this week.
@@Gspeed35xThanks for your reply. Actually my car is leased for 45k miles and i recently got it about 3 weeks ago. I am really new to this and dont know much about tuning. I got into it as mhd has made it easier. The car will have to be serviced for about 4 times, so everything will have to be reversed. Is the downpipe easily reversible and also worth it compared to the stock? Also i saw another vid of changing your air filter does that also helps the car in making more power?
Mohit Arora A downpipe should be a 2 hour job. It is reversible. So you have to decide if you want to spend 4 hours each time you got to dealer right? You get most power. It makes your car sound mean. And you can do stage 2 tune. And you protect your stock cat. It will burn out quicker like others said. Filter doesnt do much maybe better MPG. But I dont drive it to get good MPG.
@@Gspeed35x lol i think i am going to keep the stock cat with the stage 1 tune and the fuse removed, hopefuly i dont burn it out within the lease but how much extra power would it make with stage 1? Also would stage 2 be really bad for the stock cat?
So the guy from MHD is saying that the DME cannot be flashed directly on these as of now because its locked
That sucks man
Oh ok didn’t know that...
Lol never mind I had to really look due to the lighting.
Why not just change the option setting for engine sound to Sport? Works on my 2020 M40i.
Would this void the warranty pulling for a day and putting it back?
@@collsguyno
How does this affect the mileage? Does it consume more gas even in the eco mode?
I dont think it affects your MPG by having the flap open. It does make you want to zoom faster to hear it so your MPG will go down. lol.
You bought the wrong car if you're worrying about mileage
@@Bestwick1983 haha that's only the first 3 months of ownership. Now, I am mostly driving in the eco mode lol. No matter the income it's tough to see 1/4 of tank filled with 91 octane gas gone in just 1 hour of sport plus driving with the gas price these days lol
Hey man, I just did that but it disabled my parking sensors. I have a X4 2020 but it should be the same?
Do you have HK audio? It will not work without the HK audio, the fuses are set up differently.
Gspeed 35x no I don’t :/ is there any way I can find out which fuse it is??
@@Gspeed35x hey so I don’t have HK audio - if I pull out the fuse 203 ’to keep flap open it won’t work ?? Thnx
