My full sized astro turf from pegasus arrived today from subbuteoworld. I got the one already attached to mdf as I'm terrible with glue. I've not opened the box yet but I'll send you a pic on Twitter once the rest of my stuff arrives. Thanks for all your help on twitter these past few days advising me where to buy and the subbuteo fair etc
I ended up here because my SO didn't know what Subbuteo was and it was easier to show her a video than try to explain it. This video reminded me of the wooden board my grandfather put my pitch on when I was a kid. I actually spent more time playing with myself and trying to recreate the excitement of a real football match than playing games with other people. It was a football-related way to occupy my time when my team wasn't playing before I discovered football management sims. I wish I still had the Subbuteo related bits I had when I was younger but life intervened and they all dropped off the radar. I like the idea of collecting Subbuteo teams but I have enough collections as it is and I can't justify devoting space to something I have no practical use for. I love the table you've built, though. Very nice work.
The boy done good! One thing I would just say is that the thickness of MDF might be a bit excessive. It just adds weight. If you use thinner MDF, and use your skirting board or battening around the outside, you can use similar battening down the centre bottom of the board, and two supports across from width to width to stop the MDF from distorting. Tidy it up by using the same battening all the way around the bottom of the board. It takes a bit longer and costs a little more, but it will mean your board is lighter. Unfortunately when I play, I have to lug my table downstairs, and the first board I built used 18mm MDF, like yours! I didn't fancy a hernia, so I rebuilt mine with thinner board!
Andy Henly yeah i is a tad heavy but heard stories about was board less than 18mm bowing out of shape. Luckily being a smaller pitch it’s not as heavy as it could be
What you heard is correct Stew, IF you don't put support underneath. You can get away with it, if you make a framework of battening underneath. I build model railway boards like this. My oldest one dates back to 1999 and it's still as good as it ever was!
Great effort!, I think back in the day, my mate had his on plasterboard, I think his dad done it for him, but the pitch adhered to the board perfectly, no need for any adhesive. The lines around the pitch were perfectly straight, the fence surrounding and goals were held down by drawing pins(only goals removed after games). Best pitch I ever saw or played on, the ball ran perfectly. I close my eyes and we are still playing on that pitch, happy days indeed!!
@@SubbuteoCollector yeah, the wood was lightweight, the ball ran so smoothly. I had mine on a board too, a thinner kind of wood, it was ok, but nothing like my mates. I remember him getting the World Cup edition for Xmas around the same time (late 70’s), with the 3 teams, Argentina, Brazil and Germany if I remember right. I always wanted that set. He was a Birmingham fan and I’m Villa, it was the only Subbuteo game we never played, it would’ve caused us to fall out!

Nice job, I'm imagining doing the same but hinged in the middle so it folds into a carrycase, open the hinged case out, remove the folded-in-two pitch from on top of the one side, dig out the players, goals and ball from underneath, put empty boxes back in case, open pitch (mounted on split board, (if there was a little routed recess/step in all around the inside edge of the case the pitch would drop snugly in so it lays nice and flat (that recess would also provide a perfect cavity to house the folded pitch securely when the two recessed halves are married when the case is closed) .. oh for the tools the time and the space lol
You've got it worked there pal. I just couldn't work the hinges out when I went for it. Don't forget to subscribe and hit the bell to stay up to date :-)

Quality! Iv has a subbuteo set from when I was a kid, been wanting to mount it on some board for a while but not known how best to do it. Cheers for the tips 👌🏻
Another thing - saw the video with the 'sponge' balls, played with these when came out with the smaller goals too, balls were OK but I missed the sound of 'plastic on plastic' but they were good for getting height.
I think it looks excellent. If I had the time and patience, I'd do likewise but instead I have ordered a bespoke 5 a side one from Gareth at FlicksforKicks. As much as I would love a full size one, the colour arena one from Flicks is perfect for holidays away and my 2 lads to play on before I introduce them to corners, throws in etc! That and I like the look of it. I think you did an excellent job on yours.
@@SubbuteoCollector You're welcome! I saw you just subbed to my channel, thanks for helping out my Subbuteo related channel which I just created. If you wonder Marigliano is a small city in Naples (Italy)
When built my first it was a mess.. So your one is great. The art is to paint all bits. Forget about them. When dry sand rough spots and then do pitch first onto the main board. Pull the edges as far as possible over the edges and pin, tack, staple until happy all lines are straight and then you screw in the skirtings and add the extras. But brilliant job mate

I don’t have anyone to play with, that and I’m not sure where I’d stow it once I make a table. One question. Why cut openings near the goals? The ball will just roll off on the floor and you have to chase it. Just a question
David Southwell it’s so the goalkeeper rod sits flat behind the goal and so that you can get your hand on it properly. Plus if you hit the target, no ball rolling off
Hi mate - great video! It has inspired me to build one for the kids (and me of course) quick question on the link for the pitch - it takes you to the website and says the product already comes mounted on wood? Is that how it came or is that link wrong?
