Agree 100%. I was an avid collector in the 80's. Bought Topps for years, picked up Fleer and Donruss when they came around, and then Upper Deck. Never heard of Tiffany. Which makes this video kind of useless, since it's 90% Tiffany.

I have several of these cards. I started collecting (again) around 1980. I had a collection as a kid, mostly 60's cards, and gave them away. I stumbled upon a card show as a 30 year old and I couldn't believe what I had given away. So I started collecting again and built up a decent collection. 🙃 Some day I am going to get motivated and go through them and sort them out. Maybe find out what they are worth. I do have a sentimental attachment to them.
The Canseco rated rookie was so popular that there was a full size poster sold. My friend had a a huge image of Jose's face staring at him over his bed. Weird to think about that positioning as an adult.
The Jack Buck call was good. But nothing could compare to watching that game live in 1988, when I was 9. Hearing Vin Scully build that at bat pitch by pitch until it's ultimate conclusion of Gibson's homerun. I still get goosebumps when I see that ball jump off of Gibson's bat on that 3-2 backdoor slider.
i remember him limping around the bases. i was little & didn't realize he was injured and only asked to pinch hit because they had no-one left on the bench. if it was a regular season game he would've been on the DL. how crazy
I love those 1989 Bowman cards!!! I bought them up when they were new. I was a kid. I hated that the cards didn't fit in my binder sheets. I think it is one of the best looking sets of all time. So simple. Great photography. A work of art.

I have every card in this collection. My dad bought every set and traded set for me until 1992 then I started to buy them myself and continue for my kids now. Dad has passed away so the collection is crazy I have every complete set of topps upper deck fleer etc going back to the 50s never opened still in boxes.
I’m with you I collected in the late 70’s and into the 80’s before going to play college ball at USC. My most memorable was catching Randy Johnson during a Saturday Morning in early Feb in 1986 just before the start of the MLB spring training session. I still have the Catcher’s mitt I used during the Bullpen session.
I'm at about 90% of the ones shown. It's a shame about Sosa and Maguire . I definitely have all of those Griffey Jr. Only problem is how to unload them.

I got a sales and use tax license, started buying boxes at wholesale and sold at card shows, bringing $800 a day! Freakin special cards, Tiffany cards and all that crap ruined it and priced me out of things by 92. (that and being in College and doing "other" things, ahem...

We have three boxes of 1986-1991 cards. Some even still in the bubblegum wrap. I calculate over 2000 cards. Took a couple handfuls out and a lot of the cards on this list within the years I stated, are in there. Just fun to watch the videos and then search the cards. Thanks for the information. I know I have some of those cards in my collection from the mid to late 80s - brought back some old memories instantly. My parents found my card collection when they recently moved, but I haven't gone through it yet.
What memories. '83--'86 was a tremendous run of quality sets and tons of rookies with HOF/speculator interest. Alas, some didn't pan out, but generated a ton interest at the time. Eric Davis comes to mind. Nobody remembers him, but back in the day, they were comparing him to Willie Mays.
I remember Eric Davis well. He was one of my brother's favorite players. I watched a retrospective of his career recently and I did not realize his career was hampered so heavily by injuries.
Eric Davis in '87, watching 'This Week in Baseball' talk of him chasing Maris's hr record while he was jumping over the fence to steal home runs from his friend Daryl Strawberry. He ended up with straight terrible luck with injuries, but what a talent.
His wrists were so quick they didn't want to change his mechanics but that hitch didn't end his career..those damn injuries! He still had a nice career though.

First pack I ever got as a kid was 87 Topps with the wood border. I was 7 years old and just started baseball, my parents would get me packs every week for many years into the 90’s. I remember my prized card was the Upper Deck rookies of Griffey JR, I had a bunch of them, wish I knew where they went, worth a good amount these days.

Great stuff. Everyone talks about the power of the pop report, which is important. But the power of nostalgia is just as important. Canseco, Gooden, Strawberry - not HOFers or rare but cards everyone who grew up in the 80s needs to have. Surprised Eric Davis 85 Topps did not make the list.

Enjoyed the video as I grew up with these cards in this era. May finally get me to look through my collection and maybe grade some. My fav is the Rickey Henderson when things were simple with only one to three cards vs today with so many variants. Things I learned was how the value of non rookie Nolan Ryan''s may be worth and need to dig in about Tiffany and what the differences are. Again good stuff!

For the next version of this video, you might consider including: - 1983 O-Pee-Chee Tony Gwynn - 1983 O-Pee-Chee Ryne Sandberg Both of those are rarer in PSA 9 or above, and often command prices over US counterparts. - 1987 Donruss Opening Day Barry Bonds error (showing Johnny Ray) This card is quite scarce, and in PSA 9 and above, often sells higher than standard rookie cards

I remember in 1986 the donruss don mattingly card was the highest value card that year. I had 2 complete sets. Also in 1986 I went to about 30 met home games because a company that came to our restaurant had season tickets 10 rows behind the Mets dugout. The only 2 players that signed autographs, and they did every time, was Raphael Santana and Darrel strawberry . I had at least 20 signed cards of each of them.
I remember I had 4 of the Bill Ripken Error Cards and my little Brother ran his mouth and told my Parents who immediately confiscated them! They were going crazy that one of their boys had a card with "Such Language" on it... I had every intention of killing my Baby Brother... The Good Old Days...
How can you say these are worthless!!!!!! They are priceless to me. The years I’ve put into going to shows ripping packs and categorizing with my son are some of our fondest memories. Could truly care less how much they sell for. Mine (all 3 sports) have endured the years and wouldn’t be for sale anyway
Another interesting video might be "The Most Valuable Cards(Inserts) of the 1990's" as this is when inserts took off. And there are some very big prices for some of these inserts!
I have a majority of those cards. Some are graded PSA 7, 8, and a lot of them in raw form with sleeve protectors. Nice video overall & thanks for sharing!!!
stumbled onto this video today. My Youngest Son and I started collecting these cards in the early 80's. I cant remember the exact year we started, now after watching this video i want to get them out. They have been in storage for years. I dont even know if my Son still has his. He ended up joining the service in the early 90's, at a much older age than most young ppl join. He did very well, he was with the 3rd Infantry division who first went into Iraq for that war. He took care of all the weapons for them, and his vehicle he rode in, armored, was kept back in the line, and well protected. He came home eventually, but was in one of time/life magazine called 21 days to Iraq. He then started teaching weaponry at our local base here in Wi. He earned many certificates, and was trained in many different jobs he held. He had framed certificates that covered all of one wall in his large study. He really enjoyed teaching there at that base. But the work he had to do in Iraq caught up with him, and he separated from the Military employment. But it didnt stop him from going to school. He is in the last page's of that Time/Life magazine, he is pictured with one other, and they were tasked to do what we would find very hard to do as citizens/non military, and that work came back to haunt him in later years. It is a picture, their backs only, and they are just following orders, tagging and Identifying. Now I want to get those cards out and remember a better time with him as a teenager, the fun we shared with those baseball cards. They have been well stored. Should all be in good condition. All bought new.
Looking at the numbers Bonds and Canseco belong in the HOF. Jackson probably would have had he just played baseball. Murphy probably belongs there too.
I was 20 in 1988 and usually every weekend we’d go to this bar in the next town over that would serve us but one Saturday night I was sick and watched the Gibson homer live. Crazy.
Great video, Chris. I know the Tiffany cards bring rarity, but the fact that they could not be pack pulled has always been a sticking point for me personally. It would be cool to see what shakes out when non pack pull-able cards are taken away. Great video none the less. Thanks for being such a key contributor to the hobby, and the YT hobby community!
Tiffany's were not for sale in 82-91 the years of production. They were given to certin people that Topps thought deserved them such as hobby shops, advertisers, employees, and dealers. 1984 only had 10,000 boxes produced from Ireland. Don't know why the show's even put a Tiffany card price up. 99,% of collectors don't even own 1. I know I don't after 55 years of collecting.
I have sold all of these cards raw this year! I only have a couple serious collectors around me here where I live. Of course can't get any retail,but there is a store called second hand Sam's that a friend has a booth with just about any thing from the 50s to the present. He has a Satchel Topps that he is asking 200$ for. Looks good,just a little corner wear. Piece Chris!
Ryne Sandberg is from where I live. Spokane, WA.. Had that Nolan Ryan card and Rickey Hendeson rookie until they were stolen along with others out of a storage unit back in the early 90s..those were the two cards that got me back in the hobby though!
I think I may have some of the Randy Johnson Donruss cards in my garage. I remembered having a (just about) complete set of the '89 collection, but like a lot of people, felt overwhelmed when everyone and their aunt started producing cards.
I have all of Sandberg's and Boggs. Several of the others I have 1 each. Mostly Topps. Have been trading and buying this era the past year during the pandemic.

I have so many baseball cards ranging from the late 1950's to 2020. I have a couple of the Rickey Henderson cards on this list amongst many other I have no idea the value honestly. Binders on binders bro.
That is for the memories. Like approximately 108% of kids I collected heavily from 1986-1990. But this list brought a smile to my face as I remembered having many of these cards and was able to watch with my 12 year old daughter and show her the cards. I know I had the Jr. Bowman and remember trading it to a friend of mine. But I might still have one. I also got the 1986 Topps Traded set for my birthday. Mostly I wanted the Wally Joyner card but was willing to take the Canseco, Bonds, Jackson, et al. if that had to be so.
I have most of these cards if not all of them. (Have to look) I’ve been collecting since 1969. I collect certain players that have their own binders like Rose, Bench, McGwire, Ripken, Boggs, Sandburg, Ozzie Smith and a few others. As a kid I’d buy boxes of tops, fleer, donruss and UD and put together sets and buy the update and traded sets. This has been a great hobby for a long time. Plus I’ve always loved baseball. Have a lot of football cards too. And some really good hoops rookies as well. I still love it. :)
I have several of those 1980 Rickey Hendersons. That was the first year I collected baseball cards as an 8 year old. But they're not in mint condition.
I have a couple Griffey Jr rookies (‘89 Donruss). I also have that Bo Jackson Future Stars card you showed, as well as the ‘87 Topps Barry Bonds card, and an ‘89 Donruss Randy Johnson rookie.

My wife and I adopted a baby from Kazakhstan in 2008. I've got 1,250 cards at PSA to pay for his college. Lots of Griffey, Bonds, Bo Jackson, Thomas, Shaq and Jordan's! Thankfully, I was able to take advantage of the $9 bulk rate.
I had a few of these cards as a kid. 38 now. Time to dig out the containers and look thru. I know I still have the Nolan Ryan one and the upper deck Griffey.

Yeah it seems unfair that the Tiffany were only available to card dealers. It's like the hobby was already going in the direction of the rich in the mid 1980's. Personally, those pictures of the Tiffany cards looked kind of blurry anyways and the card stock doesn't seem to impress me. It made the players look more soulless and lifeless. I think regular Topps cards would be more valuable as they're on regular card stock and they have soul!
Loved watching ... brings me back to being a kid in the late 80's for sure ... I agree that a list without Tiffany would be more relevant for almost everyone (i have 1 topps Tiffany... orel hershiser... dont remember how I got it but I was always told tiffanys are 10X the value of regular topps (?) )

I feel like Beckett kind of screwed me over as a kid... For a long time they didn't list the "traded" sets as RCs, but called them "XRC's" so me and my friends didn't think they were rookie cards. So of course I collected the ones from the regular Donruss and Topps sets that aren't worth much anymore!
I was 15 during game 1 of the World Series in 88. Still get chills listening to that call.

What's sad is that I have over half of these listed, but pretty sure they aren't PSA 9 quality. Didn't take proper care of them when I was a kid.

Great stuff. Everyone talks about the power of the pop report, which is important. But the power of nostalgia is just as important. Canseco, Gooden, Strawberry - not HOFers or rare but cards everyone who grew up in the 80s needs to have. Surprised Eric Davis 85 Topps did not make the list.

Enjoyed the video as I grew up with these cards in this era. May finally get me to look through my collection and maybe grade some. My fav is the Rickey Henderson when things were simple with only one to three cards vs today with so many variants. Things I learned was how the value of non rookie Nolan Ryan''s may be worth and need to dig in about Tiffany and what the differences are. Again good stuff!

Back in the early 90s as a high school graduation present one of my uncles gifted me each year in the 80s complete card set of Donruss and fleer and tops!
This was when I was growing up and collecting cards as a kid. I still have most of them but may go hunting to get graded copies of them.
Have had my Kirby Puckett and Mark McGuire USA card in a hard case since the 80s, never touched, mint condition...thanks!

Both of those are rarer in PSA 9 or above, and often command prices over US counterparts.

This card is quite scarce, and in PSA 9 and above, often sells higher than standard rookie cards

you have no idea how much this has helped, watched this video as i was going through my dads old binder, turns out he has the rare darryl strawberry, and 3 of the rare roger clemmens, aswell as the future stars cal ripken rookie.
I remember in 1986 the donruss don mattingly card was the highest value card that year. I had 2 complete sets. Also in 1986 I went to about 30 met home games because a company that came to our restaurant had season tickets 10 rows behind the Mets dugout. The only 2 players that signed autographs, and they did every time, was Raphael Santana and Darrel strawberry . I had at least 20 signed cards of each of them.

Heading home to check my cards, I collected heavy in the late 80's. I bought complete sets of most major brands and left them in the box
I remember I had 4 of the Bill Ripken Error Cards and my little Brother ran his mouth and told my Parents who immediately confiscated them! They were going crazy that one of their boys had a card with "Such Language" on it... I had every intention of killing my Baby Brother... The Good Old Days...

How can you say these are worthless!!!!!! They are priceless to me. The years I’ve put into going to shows ripping packs and categorizing with my son are some of our fondest memories. stumbled onto this video today. My Youngest Son and I started collecting these cards in the early 80's. I cant remember the exact year we started, now after watching this video i want to get them out. They have been in storage for years. I dont even know if my Son still has his. He ended up joining the service in the early 90's, at a much older age than most young ppl join. He did very well, he was with the 3rd Infantry division who first went into Iraq for that war. He took care of all the weapons for them, and his vehicle he rode in, armored, was kept back in the line, and well protected. He came home eventually, but was in one of time/life magazine called 21 days to Iraq.
He then started teaching weaponry at our local base here in Wi. He earned many certificates, and was trained in many different jobs he held. He had framed certificates that covered all of one wall in his large study. He really enjoyed teaching there at that base. But the work he had to do in Iraq caught up with him, and he separated from the Military employment. But it didnt stop him from going to school. He is in the last page's of that Time/Life magazine, he is pictured with one other, and they were tasked to do what we would find very hard to do as citizens/non military, and that work came back to haunt him in later years. It is a picture, their backs only, and they are just following orders, tagging and Identifying.
Now I want to get those cards out and remember a better time with him as a teenager, the fun we shared with those baseball cards. They have been well stored. Should all be in good condition. All bought new.

Looking at the numbers Bonds and Canseco belong in the HOF. Jackson probably would have had he just played baseball. Murphy probably belongs there too.
I was 20 in 1988 and usually every weekend we’d go to this bar in the next town over that would serve us but one Saturday night I was sick and watched the Gibson homer live. Crazy.
Great video, Chris. I know the Tiffany cards bring rarity, but the fact that they could not be pack pulled has always been a sticking point for me personally. It would be cool to see what shakes out when non pack pull-able cards are taken away. Great video none the less. Thanks for being such a key contributor to the hobby, and the YT hobby community!
Agree. Like to see this done without the Tiffany cards. Leave them out for the same reason the "oddball" cards were omitted.
Rarity is the key. There is no asterisk for what makes it rare.
Tiffany's were not for sale in 82-91 the years of production. They were given to certin people that Topps thought deserved them such as hobby shops, advertisers, employees, and dealers. 1984 only had 10,000 boxes produced from Ireland. Don't know why the show's even put a Tiffany card price up. 99,% of collectors don't even own 1. I know I don't after 55 years of collecting.

Of course can't get any retail,but there is a store called second hand Sam's that a friend has a booth with just about any thing from the 50s to the present. He has a Satchel Topps that he is asking 200$ for. Looks good,just a little corner wear. Piece Chris!

Had that Nolan Ryan card and Rickey Hendeson rookie until they were stolen along with others out of a storage unit back in the early 90s..those were the two cards that got me back in the hobby though!
I think I may have some of the Randy Johnson Donruss cards in my garage. I remembered having a (just about) complete set of the '89 collection, but like a lot of people, felt overwhelmed when everyone and their aunt started producing cards.

I have so many baseball cards ranging from the late 1950's to 2020. I have a couple of the Rickey Henderson cards on this list amongst many other I have no idea the value honestly. Binders on binders bro.

First pack ever was 1988 Topps. Pulled the Mac all star rookie. The card that started it all for me!!!!
That is for the memories. Like approximately 108% of kids I collected heavily from 1986-1990. But this list brought a smile to my face as I remembered having many of these cards and was able to watch with my 12 year old daughter and show her the cards. I know I had the Jr. Bowman and remember trading it to a friend of mine. But I might still have one.
I also got the 1986 Topps Traded set for my birthday. Mostly I wanted the Wally Joyner card but was willing to take the Canseco, Bonds, Jackson, et al. if that had to be so.
I have a plaque with a Wally Joyner signed baseball and his rookie card attached.
I have most of these cards if not all of them. (Have to look) I’ve been collecting since 1969. I collect certain players that have their own binders like Rose, Bench, McGwire, Ripken, Boggs, Sandburg, Ozzie Smith and a few others. As a kid I’d buy boxes of tops, fleer, donruss and UD and put together sets and buy the update and traded sets. This has been a great hobby for a long time. Plus I’ve always loved baseball. Have a lot of football cards too. And some really good hoops rookies as well. I still love it. :)
I have several of those 1980 Rickey Hendersons. That was the first year I collected baseball cards as an 8 year old. But they're not in mint condition.
I have a bunch too, although they have been put away. I know there were a couple of really nice ones, but what grade they are, I don't know.

My wife and I adopted a baby from Kazakhstan in 2008. I've got 1,250 cards at PSA to pay for his college. Lots of Griffey, Bonds, Bo Jackson, Thomas, Shaq and Jordan's! Thankfully, I was able to take advantage of the $9 bulk rate.

Yeah it seems unfair that the Tiffany were only available to card dealers. It's like the hobby was already going in the direction of the rich in the mid 1980's. Personally, those pictures of the Tiffany cards looked kind of blurry anyways and the card stock doesn't seem to impress me. It made the players look more soulless and lifeless. I think regular Topps cards would be more valuable as they're on regular card stock and they have soul!

I feel like Beckett kind of screwed me over as a kid... For a long time they didn't list the "traded" sets as RCs, but called them "XRC's" so me and my friends didn't think they were rookie cards. So of course I collected the ones from the regular Donruss and Topps sets that aren't worth much anymore!
It was pretty common knowledge even as a kid that the XRC was the rookie card before the rookie card and even more valuable
