I thought Filip Leu was gonna be the best modern tattoo interview one could find online. But jeez this sure gives it a run for its money. Incredible work Andrew such a joy to watch, thank you so much
I met Leo back in the early 90s in Los Angeles when he owned Black Wave. He’s honestly one of the kindest, most down-to-earth people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting.
Got tattooed by Leo in 2018 and was one of the best experiences ive ever had. He gave me one of his new business cards that said Leo Zulueta retired. "Catch me if you can" im certainly glad i did catch him.
I’m happy that tribal is coming back around. I think it’s so powerful and, when executed correctly, looks better than most tattooing. Also the fact that you talked to Mike Tyson about his face tat rocked
Leo is the nicest tattooer I’ve ever met. We owe a lot to him. Anyone who made a living off his flash in the 90’s owes him 100 bucks for paying our rent !❤❤ great interview I’ve been tattooing 35 years. He had such an impact on me when I started out. I can’t wait. Fir my book to arrive
Where to start? I met Leo in the mid 80s at Little Dave’s. Becoming fast friends (OK… Let’s not be stupid… Leo is everyone’s friend), getting tattooed, and having many, many conversations about religion, philosophy, art, music, model-building and painting, motorcycles, and anything else that would come up… An old Filipino man came up to me at the local hardware store (National Lumber), and seeing my tribal-tattooed legs, exclaiming “I’ve seen these ones! I KNOW these!” Not a Filipino tattoo style. Weird reaction. 🤔 Later on, Leo tells me that the old man was his father, and that his dad immediately called him after getting home.😂 About the slide guitar; We had a VERY interesting conversation about *resonance.* Leo was using a three-quarter inch socket for a slide at the time. Weird and *_interesting_* sounds… kind of like Sonic Youth meets the blues. From his wide array of interests, I suspect that Leo might be an actual genius. His peers and mentors, maybe the same. Boredom, and sitting still are not options for those kind of people. All that aside, he’s the single most *_respectful,_* kind, and unassuming person I have ever encountered. I have had the great honor to know you and call you my friend, Leo. Deepest respect. ✊ I hope to see you again soon and… where’s the reef, Chief? _-Friar Chuck, the Punk Monk of Anaheim._
@ That was a great interview bro, thanks for the certainly Herculean efforts to do these interviews! With tattoo people, it’s always hard to keep it to only a couple of _short stories._ ✊

@ great episode. I like so many have been inspired by Leos work and mostly his humility
long live the king 👑
@samoanmiketatau respect! Thanks so much for watching
If you don’t at least think tribal paved the way for any tattooing then you have no respect for the trade !
Or maybe they just don’t know. Hopefully this episode can give some important context for those who need it! Thanks for watching 🙌
😮💨 just amazing
Kyle butler next!
I second this! Kyle is a beast!
KING.
Magic
I think that’s a good way to sum this one up 🙌

The old Filipino tattooer that kicked Leo out of his shop on Hotel Street had to be Rosie Camanga
