      This has helped me so much because I don't think I have been consistent with my routine and haven't paid enough attention to my hair. So every week are you doing the exact same things step by step or do you sometimes skip ahead to deep conditioner or just a co-wash?

      It depends on your hair type. Do you need protein? Is your hair feeling really “mushy” and too elastic? If so, then I would recommend doing a protein treatment.

      I have to admit, I feel a bit lost and people be like pre-poo and LOC while I'm still learning that I'm a 4c. I don't even know what is deep conditioning and how is it different from using a normal conditioner?

    • @nkechi4635
      @nkechi4635 4 роки тому +26

      @@laurasibiya4385 a normal conditioner will just be called a conditioner. It stays in your hair for a few minutes and then you rinse it out. A deep conditioner is usually literally called "deep conditioner'" or "masque". You leave it in your hair for like an hour or even overnight, then rinse it out. It provides more hydration to hair and usually helps stengthen it. You can use normal conditioner pretty often but deep conditioners usually need to have more time between each use (like a few weeks or once a month or more).

    I would like to add a few constructive comments: I don’t think your hair is naturally dry. I think you should spend more time saturating your hair with ALOT more water before cleansing. You should notice your hair looking substantially longer and stays long/stretched when it has received all the moisture (water) it can. If your hair strands are not taking in the water this means the cuticles are not opening up thus not allowing moisture to get in which means your conditioner is just sitting on top and will not be effective. Because you like to use oil for pre- poo, think about incorporating a moisturizing shampoo in your routine. Really massaging the shampoo into your hair strands. Shampoo helps lift the cuticles. The use of oils may be causing your hair to not receive the moisture it needs.

    • @kaydeep7880
      @kaydeep7880 4 роки тому +26

      Yes! Type 4 hair needs constant conditioning and hydration! These oils do nothing but clog pores on the scalp! Oils should only be applied to ends of the hair, as sebum from the scalp is harder to reach the ends of type 4 hair.

    • @boomboom6577
      @boomboom6577 4 роки тому +12

      Dawn’staste i agree. People often don’t realize that oils are deeply drying. I use oils on my hair daily, but I always make sure my hair is wet when using them. Also, I found that putting conditioner on my drenched hair and then adding more conditioner and water halfway through showering makes it more hydrated. Actually, my dermatologist told me to add water to my conditioned hair halfway through the shower. Super pro-tip that had a huge impact.

    • @YaraMel
      @YaraMel 4 роки тому +2

      This is very eye opening. I have dry brittle hair. Would you advise me to stop pre-poo? And to stop adding an oil after the leave-in conditioner?

    • @lonnisplace1459
      @lonnisplace1459 4 роки тому +5

      Yeah. I learned about pre poo and tried it, but every time I did it our tried the LOC method, my hair would end up dry and oily. I wasn't sure if it was the type of oil I used or if it was becauae I used oil at all. I decided to skip the oil. I have a routine now where I just wash my hair, deep condition with regular conditioner or a maske with rice water, rinse that out and I wet my hair with water, put petroleum jelly on it, and then put some curl activator cream on it. My hair becomes soft. I used to just put petroleum jelly on it with water when I learned that my mom used to use it on my hair, but when I started using the cream, my hair was extra soft. I usually just do twists or braids and that's it. Quick, simple, no crazy products. I just realized that petroleum jelly is like oil. Oops, but I guess it's the oil thay works for me. Everyone has different hair and what works for one person may not work for the next. Bit it's always ALWAYS important to moisturize and take care of your hair. Keep it healthy, whether it's short or long. Health is what we need to focus on first. I don't have 4c hair. I think I have a mix. Idk. But, our natural hair is beautiful and we need to treat it like our bodies: like a temple.

    • @boomboom6577
      @boomboom6577 4 роки тому

      fanatsywriter 12345 I would think that using petroleum jelly is kind of damaging, if you aren’t regularly using a sulfate shampoo. There are plenty of oils that act like petroleum jelly, but allow your hair to breathe, and also add beneficial nutrients. Petroleum jelly is occlusive, and it adds nothing whatsoever. Even a nice herbal pomade would do the same thing and also give you the added nurturing benefits. There are some really well-formulates pomades around, with an oil base, maybe a mango butter or something for the base that would step things up a notch. But I wouldn’t use petroleum jelly and curl activator unless I washed my hair at least every other day with a sulfate shampoo that can get that stuff off of your hair completely. You are blocking our moisture just as much as you are sealing it in otherwise. And the buildup.

    A few of my take-aways are: 1. Pre-Poo 2. Deep Condition 3. A confirmation that what worked on my shorter hair will not work on my longer hair.
    4. Detangling with fingers and low manipulation styles. 5. SECTION MY HAIR! Thank you, thank you!

      @@TZ2nd one??? Omgosh. I thought my mom was trippin when she got my hair permed at 6. But yeah I feel you on the insecure part...I am tired of fighting with my hair texture and decided to transition. My last perm was in January 2020. Usually around 3 months post I start getting the "when are you getting a retouch,your roots look so nappy" from relatives but now im just gonna suck it up and let my 4c hair grow out.

      Enn Vee it’s the inevitable stage... the awkward stage. We’ve all had one, some can make it work with manipulation, others just have to soldier it out. I’m in the “growing out twa” phase. You don’t know how many times I’ve woken up and wanted to chop it all back off. But I’m riding it out!

    For 8 years I have always started my routine by detangling my hair with Apple cider vinegar and water mixture, but I think I'm going to try the prepoo with oils. The thought of washing all those good oils out my hair is a little hard for me to grasp but I'll give it a try. Also I like how you keep your hair stretched during each routine, that should eliminate single strand knots.

    • @JennJackson
      @JennJackson  4 роки тому +1

      I did the same years ago as well but I find the oils to be more moisturizing. I totally get washing the oils out, so that's why I use a simple oil like almond oil. Good luck and let me know how it goes! x

    I would suggest a prepoo with a leave in conditioner along with an oil. It softens the hair by the morning before your wash routine. After shampooing I would suggest condition and detangle with a moisturizing conditioner rinse then deep condition. Hope this helps some one if still struggling.

    The Mielle Pomegranate and Honey line (shampoo, instant conditioner, leave-in conditioner, styling product, and almond mint oil) moisturizes my hair when I do not deep condition...I agree that pre-pooing really cuts down on tangles (I use a hair mask or a hair oil)...

    I used to do all that but it broke off my hair. Too much manipulation breaks your hair. Then I shaved off my hair and I decided to do low manipulation. Aztec clay mask for cleansing (no detangling) first I follow up with a deep conditioner with heat then I detangle. My knots melt it’s def bc of true Apple cider vinegar. Hair loves acid bc it’s acidic. I legit use a brush meant for scalp massaging and it doesn’t break my hair off. Been doing this for 2 years after shaving my head and my hair is pretty long.

I normally use aloe fresh plant,castor oil,argan oil and any other available oils,cover it for as long as I can,wash, deep condition, rinse out condition! To style, I use a leave in conditioner spray,then add some oil and lotion,and plait it! I let it air dry and then I use electric comb to dry and straighten my hair! 😁 I shared my own tip too

      Merilynda Phiri I had the tangles till my scalp hurt from combing. I got rid of that by changing how I wash my hair in the shower. No more bend over and keep my hair in one direction. I also sectioned and I make sure to hold each section downward. After a while I didn’t need to. My sister plaits her hair in the shower then styles later.
