Also, they're all just too damn heavy for the eagles - they can carry a man some short distance, yes, and hobbits and Gandalf the White (who Gwaihir said was "light as a feather") were ok, but the rest just weigh too much for long distance cross-continent flying journeys. @@Rocket1377 It can enhance a story if it's meant to make a specific point about the time and culture you're writing about. But otherwise, it kind of limits and hinders the story. To be clear, allegory isn't just symbolism and parallels. You'll find that in pretty much everything, and it's everywhere in Lotr. Allegory is when you explicitly are making the story about something else. For instance, in C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia, it's explicitly an allegory for Christianity, and reading it in any other way is actually inaccurate. By contrast, In Lotr, the deity/deities definitely parallel Catholicism, but they aren't explicitly allegorical, and are meant to be their own thing in the world of Middle-earth.

You can clearly tell this when Frodo is stabbed. The Nazgul are white and glowing. Everything else is dark. When Aragorn jumps out to defend him, he's surrounded in black mist. Btw, the name Beren in inscribed on the memorial stone of Prof Tolkien, and Luthien is inscribed on the memorial of his wife. In Middle Earth, Luthien is the daughter of King Elu Thingol, king of the Sindar elves, and Melian, a person of the angelic race of the Maiar (other significant Maiar include Sauron, Gandalf, Saruman, and another found on the journey in Part 2 of this movie). The story of Beren and Luthien was important to Tolkien's overall sub-creation. Yup, the Wizards are Maiar, timeless angelic beings already in existence and present at Creation, they are undying, although the bodies they "wear" while in Middle Earth are certainly mortal. And yes, might consider them "Angels", while the next rank up, the Valar (the actual Creators of Middle Earth), might be "Arcangels").
But keep in mind the Istari (Wizards) are "under orders", and their divine powers are somewhat "nerfed" while in Middle Earth - they are there to INSPIRE the Free Peoples to rise up and defeat Sauron, not to fight the battles themselves with their full powers. So the only times Gandalf gets to use his full powers in Middle Earth are when the opponent is an actual fallen Maia, as dark angel, if you will. So he can use his powers against Durin's Bane (the Balrog, who fell to Melkor / Morgoth during Creation), and then against the recently-fallen Saruman. If Gandalf had had to face off against Sauron (another fallen Maia, corrupted by Morgoth), he could have used his full powers. I'm not sure about the Witch King, though, I mean, he was a Man, corrupted by Sauron, so maybe maybe not (they never had a face-to-face in the books like they did in the movies).

I hope Natascha doesn't think she is the first to wonder if the giant eagles could just drop the ring into the fire at Mount Doom.
There are several good reasons for this.
    1) The Eagles don't do someone's bidding just because they are asked. They saved Gandalf's life because he owes them a favor but they are certainly not his servants or his minions.
    2) The Eagles are just as corruptible as anyone. If one of them had possession of the ring, he would not hesitate to take it for himself and try to wield its power.
    3) The mission depends highly on secrecy. If some giant eagles flew toward Morder, Sauron would see them and wonder why. .He definitely has the resources to stop them and take the ring away from them.

When Isildur cut the ring from Sauron's hand, it was burning hot, and so Isildur was able to transcribe the inscription before it faded.
He described it to be written in an elven-script of Eregion in a language that was not known to him.
Gandalf first learned of the inscription when he read the account that Isildur had written before marching north to his death and the loss of the Ring.
When Gandalf subsequently heated the ring that Bilbo Baggins had found and passed on to Frodo, the inscription appeared, leaving him in no doubt that it was the One Ring.
Long before, at the creation of the One Ring, the smiths of Eregion who had forged the other Rings of Power heard in their minds the voice of Sauron, reciting the words. They then realized his plans, removing the rings from their fingers.
The inscription is in black speech. Twisted and cursed elvish and Adúnaic but prime black speech is twisted Elvish.
“Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk, agh burzum-ishi krimpatul.”
These words were disturbing to any Elves who heard them as well as made them gravely ill if it doesn’t kill you or make you go deranged first, as any words of that "Black Speech". When Gandalf recited them at the Council of Elrond, the sky darkened and the Elves trembled and covered their ears. This was the first time words of that language had been spoken in Rivendell.
Roughly translated, these words mean: “One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them.”
At some point following the gifting of the rings, a verse was written and kept as part of the Elven-lore as a way to make sure everyone remains vigilant since he could always find other ways to interact with the world and deceive someone into toppling the entire world, what's left of it.:
    (Full poem inaction below)
☆"Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie." ☆
◇Oddly enough: From the poem, we get the numbers, coming from the number of rings, 3, 7, 9, 1. Now, if these numbers are flipped, we get the year 1973, THE YEAR IN WHICH HE DIED!◇
((Mordor {BlackLand}wasn’t always what it was either, it was given this name after it became this way. Let’s just say it was once a VERY beautiful land where elves lived and then I believe certain clans of mankind later on. ❤. You’ll find no work of art is as detailed and endless as the works of veteran and Oxford professor named John Ronald Raul Tolkien. ❤

Firstly: All 16 rings were meant to go to the elves ( which lead to 300-500years of his infiltration & deception down the drain.) but Mairon of the Maiar(primordial angelic beings in simple terms as they are sort of beyond angels) disguised as a high elf named Annatar when he came to the elves pretending to be an emissary from Valinor on behalf of the Valar so it makes sense how alluring the ring is and how strong it’s pull on people is. (A bit too instant in the movies though) Galadriel soon saw right through him and especially when after speaking with him regarding not remembering him when in Valinor long ago where she learned from all the Valar thanks to being dominantly Vanyar/Teleri side over her Noldorin side where she gleaned from that encounter that she did not study under Aulë the Vala with any elf named Annatar ! But later named Sauron by the elves meaning deceiver! After all of this, The three elven rings were made in secret without Saurons touch upon them thanks to Kelebrimbor! Remember Gandalf before he became Gandalf was the same species of entity Sauron used to be!! Wow hey?
The Rings in this case, would have lost their powers eventually due to the lack of the One Ring and possibly because they were designed to defeat evil, & evil in the form of Sauron had been defeated twice already in the past.
The Three Elven Rings served their purpose for a long time. Two out of three of them had several different bearers Unlike the other Rings, the main purpose of the Three is to "heal and preserve", as when Galadriel used Nenya to preserve her realm of Lothlórien over long periods. The Elves made the Three Rings to try to halt the passage of time, or as Tolkien had Elrond say, "to preserve all things unstained". I can expand upon this based on any further statements & questions you have for me as a reply to this comment ! ❤
There is problem here with the Rings, the Three were supposed to be never touched by Sauron and that's why they were not corrupting…Sauron had not taken part in their making which made the Three more 'pure' unsullied by his dark power, unlike the Nine and Seven Rings! But Sauron in the show touched the very material they were made of!!! So technically he could have tainted them and corrupted!
Even appendices of Lot tell us the order of making the rings, so they didn't even need the righs to more detailed writings in UT or Silmarillion:
    1200
Sauron endeavours to seduce the Eldar. Gil-galad refuses to treat with him; but the smiths of Eregion are won over. The Númenoreans begin to make permanent havens.
    c. 1500
    The Elven-smiths instructed by
Sauron reach the height of their skill.
They begin the forging of the Rings of Power.
    c. 1590
The Three Rings are completed in Eregion.
    c. 1600
Sauron forges the One Ring in
Orodruin. He completes the Barad-dûr. Kelebrimbor perceives the designs of Sauron.
    1693
War of the Elves & Sauron begins.
    The Three Rings are hidden."
'Did you not hear me, Gloin?' said Elrond. 'The Three were not made by Sauron, nor did he ever touch them.
But of them it is not permitted to speak. So much only in this hour of doubt I may now say. They are not idle. But they were not made as weapons of war or conquest: that is not their power. Those who made them did not desire strength or domination or hoarded wealth, but understanding, making, and healing, to preserve all things unstained.
These things the Elves of Middle-earth have in some measure gained, though with sorrow. But all that has been wrought by those who wield the Three will turn to their undoing, and their minds and hearts will become revealed to Sauron, if he regains the One."
The 3 Elven Rings are not susceptible to “The One Ring” in any direct way.. They’re only tied by fate to lose their power if Sauron is defeated completely & absolutely. As they were made by the elves and as always they make things for a purpose and pour their literal spirit into things they create. So if Sauron is defeated then the three rings power will fade and basically become almost useless or diminished versions of their original design since by this era magic has bled from the world by a huge degree thanks to Morgoth’s poisoning the world itself with his very essence that he poured into it. Called The Long Defeat By The Elves and The Men Of The West.

Bilbo Walking Song: “Roads go ever ever on, Over rock and under tree, By caves where never sun has shone, By streams that never find the sea; Over snow by winter sown,
And through the merry flowers of June,Over grass and over stone,
And under mountains in the moon.
    Roads go ever ever on
    Under cloud and under star,
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known”
The original version of the song is recited by Bilbo in the last chapter of The Hobbit, at the end of his journey back to the Shire. Coming to the top of a rise he sees his home in the distance, and stops and essentially sings what I shared above!
There are three versions of this walking song in The Lord of the Rings.
The first is sung by Bilbo when he leaves the Shire and is setting off to visit Rivendell:
“The Road goes ever on and on,
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
    Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.”
The second version is identical except for changing the word "eager" to "weary" in the fifth line. It is spoken aloud, slowly, by Frodo, as he and his companions pause on their way to Crickhollow, looking beyond to lands that some of them have never seen before.
The third version is spoken by Bilbo in Rivendell after the hobbits have returned from their journey. Bilbo is now an old, sleepy hobbit, who murmurs the verse and then falls asleep.
“The Road goes ever on and on
Out from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
Let others follow it who can!
Let them a journey new begin,
But I at last with weary feet
Will turn towards the lighted inn,
My evening-rest and sleep to meet.”
1977: The Hobbit (1977 film): Sections of the poem are sung during the trip through Mirkwood. It appears on the soundtrack titled "Roads".
1980: The Return of the King (1980 film):
A song inspired by the poem is sung at the end of the film called "Roads Go Ever, Ever On".
1981: The Lord of the Rings (1981 radio series):
Bilbo sings the song as he leaves Bag End. It is sung by John Le Mesurier to a tune by Stephen Oliver.
    1997: An Evening in Rivendell:
The Tolkien Ensemble adapted an original melody to the song, composed by Caspar Reiff.
2001: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring:
Parts of the song are sung by Gandalf in his first appearance, and also by Bilbo as he leaves Bag End.
2006: The Lord of the Rings Musical:
The poem is the basis of the song "The Road Goes On" sung by Sam, Frodo, Merry, and Pippin in the first act.
2014: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies:
Lines of the poem partially make up the lyrics of The Last Goodbye, performed by Billy Boyd(Pippin) for the credits of the film.
This is just stuff to know when you see the next films. Maybe seeing this will spark something you read here or in other people’s comments via future reactions to the other 2 films as well as the 3 The Hobbit movies!

Tolkien(the OG of all Authors) was a veteran of the First World War and many other battles such as The Battle Of Somme etc. his works of art were to give back to the England as a form of restoring lost mythologies that he himself was a master of since he was a top professor of philology at Oxford. He did ALOT of his writing while in the trenches during WWI during small “breaks” while down in those trench forts built into the ground. And while he eldest son was in the Second World War; his Lord Of The Rings writings was strictly created above all else to give his eldest something to read while stationed wherever he was stationed. I forgot that part. They sent letters back and forth about it all the time. He was also the one and only son that actually protected his fathers legacy and work. A lot of his other work were put together BY his son after his father passed away. It’s well worth to react to the documentary behind the scenes film the director and crew and cast created together as well as the interview with the son Christopher Tolkien who you get to sort of enjoy a nice indoor and outdoor chat for like what came to about 1-2 hours of wonderful footage from an era that really must not be forgotten.
His work shed a light on things like The Finnish Kalevala, Norwegian Elder Edda, The Welsh Mabinogion, The Norwegian Nibelungen, The Indian Bhagvagita & Several Irish Folklore + other Cultural things! The man also restored and translated ancient relics for the governments as one everyone trusted. Much of what’s in our dictionary come from his efforts as well.
Anytime he spoke & even posted several comments into the paper as an editorial or response to certain issues as a very involved man for the world and the environment everyone turned their head to listen to him as everyone knew his worth and respected him greatly. His works show how NOT to glorify war; shows in the films if you pay close attention while watching the next films. Sharing what you know now via the after thoughts at the end of the second film! Remember. Extended edition. There is a lot missed out on especially in the second movie regarding Boromir backstory which there is much more in the books but the films WANTED to keep more but the cinemas literally harangued him into making a “theatrical cut” which is why you have two versions. The real version and the “theatrical cut”. It was all to make more money for the company that is the theatres/cinemas. To get more showings in per day during the year. And believe me. People were camping outside and travelling the country to watch it MORE THAN ONCE.
His creations literally lead to inspiring the most currently famous books games & movies we all literally wouldn’t have enjoyed and be touched to our souls core without him and his spiritually connected brilliance. That and he was a philologist professor at Oxford first and foremost which covers so many things. Not just linguistic. The man was a true genius and Jack of all trades but ultimately LOVED the simple life.
The inspiration for Lord of the Rings was not any war, but author J.R.R. Tolkien's love of language. Especially Welsh, Finnish and Old English. He lamented the loss of any true English folklore, that was wiped out after the Norman invasion of 1066, so Tolkien wrote many books on these new "legends" he came up with himself. Much of which is centered around three languages he fully developed himself. Two Elven languages and Dwarvish.
They all have alphabets, syntax and vocabularies and can be learned. Tolkien did draw upon his personal experience in the trenches of World War ONE, not Two, as inspiration for some parts, most notably, the Dead Marshes that Frodo and Sam and Gollum pass through in The Two Towers. But war was not the inspiration for the entire series.
World Of Warcraft. Skyrim, Harry Potter, Diablo, D&D, even Warhammer and so forth wouldn’t have. Existed without taking inspiration from and or completely ripping off from Tolkien. Many great documentaries to react to about him also more about him and AWESOME stuff from the hours & hours of behind the scenes documentaries from the DVDs of the movies which are also on UA-cam & I can send you a playlist to react to from top to bottom on the channel called Pajasek99.

Elrond has full hope in mankind. Especially the Númenoreans remaining in Gondor and the far North where the Dúnedain rangers and chieftains of said rangers. Aragorn is the main chieftain. Elros was the first king of Númenor who was Elronds twin brother. Tar- Minyatur: meaning "High first-ruler" in Quenya, consisting of tar ("high") + minya ("first") + tur ("master, lord"). All the Kings and Queens after Elros also used the prefix Tar- in their royal titles in the Scroll of Kings. Aragorn directly descends from Elros through Isildur into Arvedui and so forth.

The song heard when the elves were spotted in the forest by Frodo&Sam near the beginning of the movie: here is the song the Elves were singing & chanting a very special Hymn along their journey:(With English translation)
    * Á Elbereth Gilthoniel
“o Elbereth who lit the stars”
    * silivren penna míriel
“from glittering crystal slanting falls with light like jewels”
    * Ò menel aglar elenath
“from heaven on high the glory of the starry host”
    * na-chaered palan-díriel
“to lands remote I have looked afar”
    ò galadhremmin ennorath
    “from tree-tangled middle-lands”
    * Fanuilos, le linnathon
“and now to thee, Fanuilos, bright spirit clothed in ever-white, I will ... sing”
    * nef aear, sí nef aearon
“here ... beyond the Sea, beyond the wide and sundering Sea”
    * Ã Elbereth Gilthoniel²
“o Elbereth who lit the stars”
    * Ò menel palan-diriel
    “from heaven gazing far”
    * le nallon sí di’nguruthos
“here overwhelmed in dread of Death I cry”
    * Á tiro nin, Fanuilos
    “o guard me, Elbereth”
(The elvish name given to Varda is Elbereth Gilthoniel is one of the main Valar who are of the main group of entities known as the Ainur who sang the world into being and helped shaped it further from within after some entered into the young world. She is most loved & honoured by the elves for many reasons)
It’s very important as regarding the elves history that spanned over 40,000+ years. Because even one of the three high kings within Valinor was 30,000 years old well before the third age. Galadriel is his granddaughter just do you know. Yeah. She’s very important throughout the entire histories. They are passing away with what’s left of their kin to the undying lands. Many thousands had their home in middle earth just like the high kings ancestors that woke to the stars. Their birth is shrouded in mist as is their entire existence itself. That in itself is a whole story. You’d love to react to the immersive and entertaining lore videos like moviejoob & OmarioRPG have done. It’s ever vast and rewarding to let touch your soul.❤❤❤❤
Varda is a Quenya name of Valarin origin meaning "Sublime", "Exalted" or "Lofty"
Elbereth is name given to her by the elves meaning ‘Star Lady’
    Gilthoniel essentially means Star Kindler
An original title of Varda, meaning 'the Kindler', and deriving from her making of the first faint stars in ancient times which was to light the dark world which had no sun yet and they loomed over the original Dark Lord (Fallen Valar named Morgoth by the elves) who he feared most above all even as supposedly he was the mightiest and first of all Ainur to ever exist (Ainur is the ultimate race of both Maiar and Valar)
When, long afterwards, she used the dews of Telperion(one of the two sacred trees that predated the Moon of which it birthed later on) to kindle brighter stars still, this surname seems to have fallen out of favour. After that time she was called instead Elentári, the Queen of the Stars.

Fun trivia: Gandalf, Saruman, Sauron, and the Balrog all knew each other, back before the world was made. They were even in the same choir.
Also, elves don't grow old. They can be killed, but don't die naturally. Elrond is one of the oldest elves in Middle Earth at the time -- Galadriel is the oldest. But the oldest being around will make an appearance in the second movie.

At 48:55 you ask, "Are the Elves quite tall, like taller than humans?" In general they are. Tolkien's writings equate tallness with virtue; it's one reason the Elves (literally) look down on the Dwarves. I believe Tolkien envisioned Elves as averaging around 6'8" or so. This would make casting elven extras pretty hard for Peter Jackson & Co., but they wanted their Elves to be well over six feet. Aragorn and Boromir are both tall Men, height not otherwise specified.

Well. there is some on Aragorn's height, as a pure Dunedin, he inherits the height as well and "should" be (or so I've read) closer to 7' tall. I mean, mad respect to Viggo and all, but he's just too damn short to be Aragorn. Boromir was said to be somewhat shorted and broader than Aragorn, but as near-pure Numenorean blood himself, should have been well over 6'.

The magic here is actually just requesting the elements help. Arwen asks the river, which is the border of the Elven realm of Imladris(Rivendell in Westron/modern human tongue), of which the darkness fears, for its help, Saruman asks the mountain to wake up and stop the fellowship, Gandalf asks the mountain to go back sleep and be at peace. It’s authority based and the type of relationship you have with the world around you.
All waters in middle earth are connected to one of the 7 Valar who sang the world into being long ago named Ulmo and this is another main reason why they are afraid and he had huge influence and connection to their now sunken island continent of Númenor. That and the water reflected + echoed the first song of that creation(The Ainulindalë) which is why they cannot stand it.
Magic here is is authority based, not simple latin based incantations, like Harry Potter (JKR a genius in her own right though); or Game of thrones, just two of the stories highly influenced by JRR Tolkien's scholarly works. Even Diablo, D&D and WORLD of WARCRAFT was heavily influenced by Tolkien. Even EldenRing Bloodborne, and DemonSouls/DarkSouls but those ones took major inspiration from the folklore and mythologies of our own world which is Arda/Eä(our Midgard). Just like professor and WW1 veteran Tolkien himself ❤ which is why they are beloved games. They have great depth!

The current ages of the characters: Frodo Baggins is 53. Samwise Gamgee is 38. Meriadoc Brandybuck (Merry) is 36. Peregrin Took (Pippin) is 28. Gandalf (Olòrin) - is 15,000 (in his current form. Aragorn is (won’t say, you’ll find out). Legolas is 2,931. Gimli is 139. Boromir son of Denethor II is 41!
Elves aged differently than men and dwarves. They did not suffer from old age or disease, and their lives were not limited by a fixed number of years. Instead, they aged very slowly, remaining youthful and vigorous for much longer than mortals. Though they could voluntarily leave their bodies and the ultimate thing that can kill them is grief or Sorrow that’s palpable enough for them to just not wish to live anymore.
Here are the ages of some of the main Elves of the Third Age, as of the War of the Ring:
    1. Elrond Half-elven - over 8,586 while his daughter is 3,777 old!
    2. Galadriel - around 20,000(180.000 in solar human years [1 elf year is one lifetime of man] but time is counted and felt and experienced very differently before the birth of the sun and moon. ❤)
    3. Celeborn - 20,000; (he may have been alive before her birth or around the same time as his lineage that he lived amongst his forefathers and kin might suggest he is older but they are both very ancient.)
    4. Glorfindel (replaced scenes with Arwen in the movies but it helped prop up Aragorn’s Film character progression. I still think they could have incorporated them both in the scenes somehow and included the other important stuff that went on in that forest meeting Glorfindel and his company of elves)- he’s over 2,000 (although he had been re-embodied after dying in the First Age which means his Fëa {spirit} is far older than 2000.)
    5. Thranduil - over 8000, (as he was born in the First Age and lived in Doriath with his father Oropher; Thranduil is also the father of Legolas. (As Haldir mentioned him when speaking to Legolas in Lothlòrien during the first movie’s extended scene. He shares the same kindred elven clan as to Celeborn(Galadriel’s husband).
It's worth noting that Elves could choose to die voluntarily, usually when they grew weary of life or when they had fulfilled their purpose in the world. However, their spirits would then depart to the Halls of Mandos and could eventually be re-embodied in a new
    body
I meant to add that Frodo was 51 when he left due to the whole Gandalf coming back to the shire after many years. that explains why his youthful appearance didn’t change much throughout the entire film!

I love how inspirational Tolkien's work was for the entire genre of fantasy. I always viewed it, not that people stole from him, but that he's the father of it all. The same level of awe and inspiration and appreciation that learning about Tolkien brings you now is very similar to what it was like for me to discover the Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov, the father of all modern scifi. I hope one day we get movies to do the full Foundation Trilogy in all its glory and they do justice to the books just like the LotR movies. (commenting on your video as I watch it, I feel like I'll have a lot to say, this is a great review, I love getting to see you re-experience it as an adult, and enjoy it so much.)

Seeing British people get turned on to Tolkien makes me happy in a way I can't explain. And, yes, pretty much all MODERN popular fiction lifts heavily from his writing, but usually only in aesthetic ways. Tolkien, in turn, lifted heavily from Beowulf, the Arthurian legends, Biblical writings and other sacred Christian legends as well as many other specifically medieval stories. So people steal his tropes and aesthetics, but no one really writes he did.
Also, I've got good news: You're just going to keep loving Sam more and more. As one should.

The name Legolas is a Silvan dialect form of pure Sindarin Laegolas, which means "Greenleaf". At one point he is called "Legolas Greenleaf" by Gandalf, coupling his name and its translation like an epithet.
Legolas consists of the Sindarin words laeg, a very rare, archaic word for "green" (cf. Laegrim, Laegel(d)rim, the Green Elves), which is normally replaced by calen (cf. Calenhad, Parth Galen and Pinnath Gelin); and golas, a collection of leaves, foliage (being a prefixed collective form of las(s), "leaf")
    ❤❤❤❤❤
"The name Legolas Greenleaf first appeared in The Fall of Gondolin, one of the chapters of The Book of Lost Tales Part Two, written in early 1917. The character is mentioned only once and is unrelated to the character discussed above [LOTR]. As the Lost Tales were the first embodiment of Tolkien's mythology, and by the time The Lord of the Rings was written much had changed, this in all likelihood is not the same Elf, and he was not included in the published The Silmarillion.
But the others, led by one Legolas Greenleaf of the house of the Tree, who knew all that plain by day or by dark, and was night-sighted, made much speed over the vale for all their weariness, and halted only after a great march.-The Book of Lost Tales Part Two, "The Fall of Gondolin"The Legolas of Gondolin, who Tolkien would likely have renamed, has a different etymology. His name (Laiqalassë in its pure form) comes from the primitive Quenya (Qenya) words laica ("green") and lassë ("leaf"). The names are very similar, but the characters were different: Legolas of Gondolin was possibly a Noldor in exile, of the House (kindred) of the Tree. However, the published Silmarillion, in describing Turgon's founding of Gondolin, states that Turgon took with him up to a third of the people under Fingolfin, but an even larger number of the Sindar. Thus, whether Legolas of Gondolin was of Noldorin or Sindarin descent is debatable."
    ❤❤❤❤
Legolas’ name known to mankind is GreenLeaf. And elves don’t have sirnames. Sometimes there’s mentioned “son of so and so” be it the mother or father as an honorific. Second names are often given by friends and simply due to their deeds and signs of close friendship etc.
The old joke was “greenleaf greenleaf” which doesn’t make sense so it’s either greenLeaf or Legolas in common elvish.

First off, you make a most lovely elf. 🙂
I first heard this story when I was a kid, ten years old back in 1978, when my dad (a huge fan of Tolkien) read The Lord of the Rings to my little sister and I as a bedtime story for a year or so. My sister, being six, went to sleep quickly, but I was enthralled and stayed awake most every night until dad was done reading, and then I dreamed of exploring Middle Earth and taking part in adventures there.
While the movies diverge from the books and leave quite a bit out while altering other things for ease of presentation (otherwise the movies would each be thirteen hours long instead of three and change) they are brilliantly and wonderfully done. A complete masterclass in all aspects of movie making. I never get tired of watching them.
The actors all deserve immense respect for their dedication to the craft. Viggo Mortensen especially went to the max in becoming Aragorn, all but living every moment of his day in Aragorn's kit so that he grew used to it and could move as freely and effortlessly in it as he could his regular clothes. This is why he seems so very comfortable in his kit on screen, because he was. It adds so much verisimilitude to his character. And Sean Astin as the ever loyal Sam was just perfect too.
Extra props to the craftspeople in charge of all the physical FX. Making all the orc, goblin, and Uruk-hai outfits to scare the snot out of the unprepared seeing their hideousness for the first time. It requires so much dedication and so much hard work to make all these individual pieces to give so many individual looks for each of these evil creatures. So bloody brilliant.
Looking forward to the rest of your reactions!

Way older. Gandalf (Olórin) is the same species of being as the Balrogs/Sauron before twisted by Melkor[Morgoth]. They are all Maiar (primordial spirits) created by Eru’s Thought (extensions of Eru Îlluvatar himself whilst they had their own free will & individuality.
He essentially got the chance to experience and study other parts of himself through this.) among the other Ainur before the Years of the Lamps roughly 9,000+ years before arriving in Middle-earth; In Valinor he was known as Olórin.(Remember though he formally existed before the world existed and his form becoming Gandalf hadn’t happened yet. He was sent to Middle-earth in human form around the year 1000 of the Third Age.
      ❤️❤️❤️❤️
So his many forms had different ages in length of existing. He’s very cool right! Could he get any cooler!? 😎❤️ Another thing is when he arrived in middle earth he was disguised as an elf & lived among them whilst they were unknowing & he became to be known as Mithrandir to the Quendi/Eldar❤️ He could have very well dwelled with the elves far earlier just do to his curiosity & simple desire to explore and be around the firstborn (TheElves)
      Gandalf The Grey/White
Estimated at 15,000 years old (following his quote "300 lives of men, I have walked this earth"), It says that Gandalf was the wisest of the Maiar besides Melian herself. There were a lot of Maiar that were considered really great and powerful. 300 lives of men, according to Tolkien, the average life span of a man is 70 years. So, 300 x 70 is 21000 years.
      ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
However, there is a much longer answer. Like Sauron(former name is Mairon) & the other Istari (the order sent around the same time & of which he was appointed leader but he being who he is & a student of the Vala by the name Nienna & Lorien(Irmo).
Gandalf was one of the Maiar, an angelic spirit created by Eru at the beginning of time and therefor one of the many Ainur who sang the world into being & Eru just helped their creation take shape and basically stated “behold YOUR creation” & basically what happens in that world goes sort of preordained as by that song eons ago so really only the ages after Dagor Dagorath will truly be an age that isn’t full of strife; sadness; and longing.
      ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Also. These lamps are what were before even the two trees. These were Giant mountains but also like light houses but housing a great power but it may have also been where two special Maia lived that helped in the creation in the sun and moon after Melkor With eldrich terror Ungoliant killed the trees, so yea “Arien” is the Maia who basically exists with the sun and her brother and or lover of sorts is the one who wanders with and guides the moon. Of which that other Maia was “Tillion”
Galadriel herself not only witnessed this but as a student of Aulë and the other Valar she obviously had involvement in helping create the hallowed objects that housed the final flower of the silver tree Telperion that was the father of the moon and the mother of the sun was Laurëlin the golden tree and prior to the sun and moon they too used to wax and wane!

Saruman never served Sauron nor bent to him at all in the books. The Gandalf locked in the Tower bit is explained ONLY in the Unfinished Tales Book: In [manuscript-C) The Black Riders arrived at the Gate of Isengard while Gandalf was still a prisoner in the tower. In this account, Saruman, in fear & despair, & perceiving the full horror of service to Mordor, resolved suddenly to yield to Gandalf, & to beg for his pardon & help. Temporizing at the Gate, he admitted that he had Gandalf within, & said that he would go & try to discover what he knew; if that were unavailing, he would deliver Gandalf up to them. Then Saruman hastened to the summit of Orthanc - & found Gandalf gone. Away south against the setting moon he saw a great Eagle flying towards Edoras.
See, the thing is he was always master of studying the enemy & even being able to think like they do to always know exactly the best ways to handle ever situation and so on, but the thing is he didn't just become the enemy, he at this time in a sense for once actually grew afraid of him, probably Sauron did what Sauron did with Finrod Felagund(Galadriel’s elder brother who by the way was the most important in the Legendarium & is the main reason the third age even exists) which basically widdled Saruman with various visions of the past and future until it wore him down, but Saruman(Curumo) was the mostly already becoming weary due to what was called The along Defeat, magic bleeding out from the lands of middle earth and subsequently certain things become less and less possible and the elves begin to go west. Even the ones who never wished to leave middle earth and many of which were born here by the thousands.
So him also being a student and helper of Aulë of the Valar he was going to fight fire with fire and make a bid for the ring just so Sauron could never regain full power and if Saruman found a way to release himself from his power restrictions even by any small margin or worked with Eru in some way it might have worked out in the end if things went differently enough to where such action from him would be needed. Ontop of that he was growing ever jealous of Gandalf for he received the Varya from Círdan and prior to that was chosen by the other Valar, Nienna’s chosen champion to go to middle earth. But Gandalf(Olórin back then) refused over and over and exclaimed his fear of Sauron(Mairon), varya I feel would have kindle the heart of Saruman to stay strong as he had been fighting the evils of the world for a very long time since he had been sent to Middle Earth.
And for the is reason Saruman wished to hold the ring at hostage. Keep Sauron from taking back his full strength and basically use it to stave off The Long Defeat

He didn’t mix Christian stuff into it he hated allegory ontop of the fact it was the Norman war that destroyed the Anglo Saxon culture to a huge degree which was a crusade of sorts which lead to this culture he used all 25 of his books to recreate and revive ancient knowledge! Especially on Anglo Saxon and olde English cultures/mythologies and so forth. Whilst shedding a light on the Finnish Kalevala(more than one) and the Welsh Mabinogion etc. ❤

I truly believe you have elf in your DNA! Great cosplay! Tolkien himself said he didn’t invent medieval fantasy, just rediscovered it. The world building in his stories is off the charts. He did the maps himself and made languages and their alphabets for multiple races and cultures. The history of middle earth (The Silmailion) reads more like a text book than novel, and given he was an Oxford English professor that kinda makes sense. Sadly he passed away before he fully finished the Silmarillion. The task to finish it fell to his son Christopher Tolkien who had it published. Also props to you for watching the extended versions!

I've lost count of the number of reactions to LOTR I've watched and this is a great one. I think more elves should be Northern Lasses, it's quite mesmerising.

J.K. Rowling admitted to being inspired by Tolkien. I'll be honest, I respect both authors and their work but the cross references between the two among fans annoy me. Lord of the Rings is its own universe while Harry Potter is based on this idea that there's an alternate reality in direct alignment with our reality as normal human beings. Both are great tales and their similarities are not coincidental, but they are both solely their own stories. I would argue that Harry Potter is not the closest thing to the Lord of the Rings; Sword of Shannara and even Game of Thrones are both much closer to the Lord of the Rings than Harry Potter.

The films are long because the 40min long credits that included the 3000 plus people who put their sweat, blood & tears into making this work, all 3 were filmed at the same time; which in itself was an art-form in itself!

Elves for their first 100-200 years are almost indistinguishable to Mankind as their Fëa spirit hasn’t fully burned bright enough with growing age.
Their power as Tolkien says for all things in the world regarding the older something or someone is the more powerful they are. For many reasons I’d love to see you take a few guesses. I love to see what reactors have to say/ask to our community ❤
The large ears for elves thing came after Tolkiens legendarium inspiring the entire world. There ears were practically like those of the Gift Of Men. Maybe a slight point to them.

The Peter Jackson movies are masterpieces but they do Isildur some injustice. In the books, he NEVER succumbs to the ring, he instead spends his time being a fair ruler who practically gave power away to the people instead of being power hungry. He comes to realize that he is not powerful enough to truly bend the ring to his will. That it will eventually overcome him. Isildur resolves to give the ring to Elrond but is killed on the way to Rivendel. It's a tragic story of a man that tries to right his wrong but ultimately fails.
In the books isildur literally repented and was about to bring the ring to Rivendell and apologize as he recognized it was beyond him even for a great numenorean connected to the faithful line of the mighty Elendil
I preface the prologue & war, other depictions I LOVE, captured the themes WELL, the vibe of the whole trilogy! The significance of the duel between Elendil & Sauron was Nerffed; (He wasn’t some random old bloke in armour getting smacked around) This man was MIGHTY and gleaming with power which you’ll find out in the great videos you’ll soon react to with joy!
    * He and Gil-Galad; last true Elven King battled Sauron and slayed Sauron’s physical body and both died in the process. GilGalad was held high by the face for all free peoples to see as he then incinerated his bodily form to a crisp of ash! Isildur was part of the fight too but not as prominently and he just comes up to the body to cut the ring finger off and…. So one example is how easily Sauron is killed in the intro.
    * • He's set up as this super powered badass, but all you have to do is cut off his finger? That's not how it went down in the book, where the greatest man-king and the greatest elven-king had to double-team Sauron to strike down his body, but were killed in the effort (Isildur then cuts the ring from the corpse).
Especially for elves the title of king has many meanings & by the Third Age there isn’t a population large enough to even attempt to such a thing as creating a unified kingdom, which would put a target on their backs, let alone many of them are beyond all of that anyway as it’s seen as doing more harm than anything good.
    * They also seen what happened when the elves fell upon the swords of their own hubris and passion no matter if it was for the right reasons some of the time. That it always ended up in some sort of tragedy which sometimes even damaged the earth itself.
They had long known about what’s called the Long Defeat as ever since Morgoth’s marring of the land itself; pouring his remnants into it that caused the “magic” to slowly drain away from the land itself, which is sad because for ages several clans of elves were born there. even the greatest ancestors were “born” in middle earth awakening to the stars !
Many of who are left have accepted the next phase of their life which is to become councillors, healers and loremasters to those with the heart to listen and the desire to learn. But above all the guardians and custodians of several things and the world itself for as long as they can remain!❤ The elves “exist” as long as the world does. And Tolkien made it obvious in many ways that it’s our world as he restored Anglo Saxon culture/Mythologies and folklore, and their languages too alongside Irish, Welsh and Finnish mythologies too. Especially Norwegian(of which I am)
This is what Amazon (the show that shall not be named) didn’t deliver either [[AKA the actual story which inspired everything we love into existence with games and movies and books and so forth. Skyrim, elder scrolls, oblivion, Diablo, and world of Warcraft and D&D. And Game Of Thrones was hugely inspired by Tolkien… yet as the godfather of everything and the heart of what caused many peoples lives to be saved cannot get the justice it deserves for adaptations? People literally conquered cancer because of the books and the trilogy, the books were read to their children for years. All 25 of them. The man was a hugely respected scholar and professor in the world. Translated ancient artifacts and hieroglyphs and petroglyphs and so forth for the government etc.
(JRR Tolkien even rejected being recruited into the CIA several times & he wrote everyone by letter and referenced the dudes who came to him as “little boys who knew not what they got themselves into” which showed his fearlessness.). The readers of the trilogy that came out are who he writes back to despite always replying to everyone back and forth. Many people have shared the stories regarding these conversations which were past down throughout the family lines of the people who had a personal relationship with Tolkien which was hundreds of people when he was alive. Thousands. (Some are in video format too or happened to be shared later on in the video or comes up during a video about him and his work. Especially nowadays when many of us came out of the woodwork to defend professor Tolkiens legacy from amazons money grubbing hands and so forth. Giving many channels a new lease on life where some make Tolkien related content now amongst other things they create content wise.
