    You're the first person I've been able to find that clearly explains Lightroom in a quick and easy fashion! I had my hunch that CC wasn't as great as Classic (which is what I use) and you confirmed this! Looks like Adobe still hasn't done much to update....

      Keep in mind that this video was uploaded October 2017. Adobe could have already added features that CC was missing at launch. (I don't know myself. I just barely got a subscription and am trying to find out myself which one to use)

    I just switched from Lightroom 5 to Lightroom CC and it is TERRIBLE because I've lost features and I'm paying monthly. To make it worse, I'm hearing that I can't download Classic on my MacBook Pro which is my only computer for my business because I literally travel full time. Know any workarounds for that?

    Absolutely agree, pricing is a problem, I create 256GB per day or more, just wonder how long will it take to upload that to their cloud? I can copy them to my NAS via thunderbolt within 15mins and import to LR in the next 5 minutes. Current I can just about upload 2-30gb to google drive in each hour, is Adobe realistic to believe they have the bandwidth to handle the normal workflow?

    Brilliant! At last someone who is happy to tell the truth. Adobe have screwed up and launched a new product before it’s really ready and have not though through the implications. I predict their sales will suffer as more and more serious photographers (both pro and amateur) move away from Lightroom. Thanks for your clarity and device.

    I don't really see why anybody would prefer the new Lightroom CC. What's with the obsession to upload all files in the cloud? What about privacy? (After all the hacks I am not terribly confident of Adobe's security.) And in what world do Adobe managers live when they've apparently never had an outage of their internet connection or couldn't access the internet because they were moving and the new connection wasn't ready yet? Personally I also don't really see the need to edit photos with Lightroom on a smartphone. Screen is tiny, fingers are big, why not do it properly on the desktop? Your needs may vary, but for me the mobile app was always a solution to a problem I've never had. And now I am a bit concerned that this is the first step by Adobe to kill off the desktop version.

    • @clearlyed
      @clearlyed  7 років тому +6

      I kind of agree with you. that there will be challenges with internet connections etc. but I also understand the need for mobile editing and editing accross multiple devices. but I think they have different purposes. I might use both, Lightroom Classic for most of my work especially professional then Lightroom CC for any travel photography so I can edit as I go. Its definitely an interesting move.

    • @alrafter
      @alrafter 7 років тому +13

      A professional might have the need to edit on the go but not most amateur photographers. Why would anyone on holiday or out for the day want to edit straight away? They surely have better things to do than mess with photos. The most pleasure that I get is looking at an editing when I get home.

    • @vinceka637

      For me, it's all about instagram. Because I can't post to instagram from a computer, I currently edit all of my photos on my computer, then upload to google drive, and then download to my phone to post to instagram. I manage not only my own instagram account, but also the accounts of several models. I post between 15 and 20 photos per day every day, 7 days per week.
      The new LightroomCC offers relief to some of those workflow hurdles, but after using it for a couple hours yesterday I don't believe it's ready for prime-time use yet. I still ended up using Lightroom Classic to develop the images. The mobile version of Lightroom is really substandard as well. In the future, I look forward to fully functioning versions of LrCC. But for now, i'll still be jumping those hurdles.

    • @Juergen_Weginger
      @Juergen_Weginger 7 років тому +5

      This is what I also concerned about that they kill the classic version. So you have to pay monthly for Lightroom and, i guess, a huge amount of money for online memory space for your archive. Currently I would need around 6 TB.

    • @Juergen_Weginger
      @Juergen_Weginger 7 років тому +4

      I don´t really see a lot of professionals who would need to edit on the go. Landscape photographers, portrait photographers, fashion, travel and so on they all need a high end editing of their images and not on an Ipad with the wrong color. On a two week trip I take over 4000 images, when the heck should I upload the images into the cloud when I`m on a remote destination like in Alaska or Iceland. I select and edit at home, on my computer and on my harddrive.

    Ed, best video I have ever seen. Adobe comes out with smoke and mirrors and tries to not explain it in detail. Which you did. Awesome, thank you. One additional limit to Lightroom CC is that I am always traveling, and sometimes on a plane without internet-and that would make all my files inaccessible.

    It really bugs me that the photographer's plan (that includes Photoshop) now costs almost three times what it was originally. Fortunately I signed up when it was a package deal with PS and LR together so I get both and the new version of LRcc at the original price. They will lose a "paying" customer in me if that changes - I'll go back to yo-ho-ho-ing the software.

    Thank you so much for this!!! I am just beginning my journey in Photography and I was overwhelmed with the BS and the insane amount that Lightroom CC pushed you to spend stupid amounts of money to store your files. I think it is a money grab as everyone knows RAW files are massive and take a massive amount of storage. You are right when you say that it has been put to market before it was ready and I swear they must have someone that used to work at Nintendo trying to screw the public every which way with add on after add on and storage increase after storage increase! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️
    Thankfully I saw the forest for the trees (so to speak) and canceled with it straight away and after watching this will be re calibrating with Lightroom Classic. Thank you for that your awesome and honest which I love!🙏🏻😍👍🏻

      I think adobe lost a lot of people wit Lightroom CC a few years ago however I cannot recumbent enough using Lightroom classic CC. Its a lot more powerful than Lightroom 5 and supports the newest cameras so if you end up updating your camera you may need to. the improvement this year alone is worth it in my optinion. Saying that light 5 was amazing.

    • @MJGangitano
      @MJGangitano 5 років тому +3

      Totally agree 5 is sufficient for the Hobby Photographer. $10/month is too much! I personally find the cloud SLOW and not safe. I tried saving files while traveling and took forever. I think I rather work on my I7 and 4T storage it is more that safe and if it goes down well I guilty. Not some multinational Hacker.

    Great explanation. There's no way I'd ever use the new version even if storage was free. I prefer local storage when on the road...mobile plans are far too expensive.

    • @clearlyed
      @clearlyed  7 років тому +2

      exactly. most series shooters have there system and cloud storage gets expensive over time. I see its merits but right now Lightroom CC is going to be too pricey for pros to really take it seriously. Maybe its just splitting the market though hence they have kept Lightroom Classi CC. Im just happy they didn't force us all to go Lightroom Cloud.

      My full time gig is as a software engineer. Doing that for the last 20 years has pretty much taught me that when you have two products that do the same thing, eventually one of them gets killed. Usually it's whatever is labeled as classic or legacy. So that has me wondering if I should start looking at Capture 1 and Affinity Photo (or some other replacements).

    Good thing I saw this video. I haven't use LR in over a year and when I opened LR CC (I opened the wrong app), I was so frustrated that I couldn't find any of the features I used to use. I even watched YT videos to help me relearn LR but none of the interface matches. I came to find out I was using the wrong app. Damnit Adobe!!!

    • @clearlyed
      @clearlyed  7 років тому +1

      I would agree. Although Lightroom CC is powerful I really think that its use is only for mobile shooters or though who are seriously on the move all the time. But for the most of us Lightroom Classic is a far better and more important product.

      Would you recommend having your Lightroom Classic library duplicated on CC so it can be stored on the cloud? I definitely will continue using Classic as opposed to CC for overall/editing purposes but am wondering if it is worth it just to have it to take advantage of the storage opportunity (I don't have enough content to need to pay for anything as of yet). And could it also be used as a route to access your Lightroom Classic photos from your mobile?

    • @AdventureDarin
      @AdventureDarin 7 років тому

      I don't recommend it. I would rather just buy a an external hard drive. I don't always work on images where there is an internet connection, so if I can't access the cloud how would I get my stuff.
      However, I have an Iphone 8 Plus and I'm using CC for images I shoot on my iphone.

    I am not a pro photographer and have been using LR for the last 3yrs. I do 99.8% of my photo editing in LR and I have the standalone version. Now, if I decide to purchase a new camera, I will be forced into purchasing a subscription and always keep paying for LR. THIS SUCKS!!!!! I am always touting the ease of use and functionality of LR to all my friends, but now I will have to tell them how bad this is because once you stop paying for your subscription LR will stop working. Nice way to screw the non-pro photography people LR.

      Photoshop has had an update
      Premier has been updated but I don't think it's changed.
      I have the full suite so have access to all the light rooms
      Lightroom cc 2015
      Lightroom cc
      Lightroom classic cc 2017
      I don't know if I get the 1 terabyte of cloud storage on lightroom cc you get the cloud storage for free on the website.
      They have upped the full suite cloud storage to 100 gigs

      yoj can open multiple project now (like after effect), remove all gaps in a project in a single click, responsive design (trimming your clips don't effect keyframes)
      you can't release an update without updating the apps, it makes no sense.

    • @clearlyed
      @clearlyed  7 років тому

      Well I'm not sure that $10 a month is ready. its keeps the software current and allows there company to grow while keeping the prices low. I think they definitely did bring out a poor product this time but Lightroom Classic is just as awesome, only faster and supports the new cameras.

    • @MaxRiley
      @MaxRiley 7 років тому +3

      Lightroom CC is useless as it is now, as you pointed out too. Also, "renting" by paying a monthly subscription for CC or classic doesn't make sense at all to 99% of photographers who only edit 10 shots a month as amateurs.

    Love your videos, always good information. This may be a stupid question but if all of my images are stored in the cloud, am I still able to save them to my PC or ext. hard drive also? If everyone moves to the cloud based storage system, is it not possible at some point in the future that Lightroom could lock you out from accessing your images for some reason? Perhaps a glitch in the system of your monthly payment or they force you to upgrade to some new software or subscription in the next 5 yrs. Are all of your images going to be held hostage? Thanks!

  • @justinbuettner8547
    @justinbuettner8547 7 років тому

    I love CC and already use the mobile version and I am a high volume wedding photographer. I just upload one wedding at a time. I don't need to keep all my wedding photos in the cloud. So the notion you would have to purchase endless amount of drive space is silly. The mobile or CC version is SO MUCH faster than even the now "classic" version that it is worth the transfer to the cloud. Not only that to be able to be mobile and edit on the go is a HUGE advantage for me. I was getting so sick of being tethered to a desk.
    So if the main hang up is drive space so you can leave every image you take in the cloud, you are missing out on a much easier (and more fun if you have an iPad pro and apple pen) way to edit. I would recommend to people to give it an honest try, I think you will find it to be a better way to edit.

    Don’t know if this was brought up in the comments but you didn’t quite go into about Lightroom sync in LR Classic. You touched on it with the collections comment, but it is possible to use Sync on LR classic with the Lightroom CC app on your phone or tablet. That way you can do some of your photos to go and make basic edits. Also, you can take photos with the Lightroom CC app on your phone and use sync with LR classic, for say, using the GPS location to add to the photos you took with DSLR camera. Though LR sync can be a little tricky but I use it mostly for the GPS info.
