- I often only do reviews on one car at a time, but I felt like comparing my MG Midget vs my friend Craigs MGB GT is a good comparison if one was wondering the differences between the two.

Back in the late '70s I had a beautiful 72 MGBGT. Absolutely loved that car. Unfortunately had a drunk side swipe me push me up over a curb and slam into a steel pole. Myself and my passenger were a little banged up but the car was totaled. A week earlier I had just put a brand new paint job on it that butterscotch color. It was spotless at the time of the accident. Thank God for State Farm. Cuz it was a hit skip they never caught the other driver.
The full size MGBs would be my choice. More room.
The mgb gt is one of the prettiest silhouettes of all time not so much the roadster but the gt 👌
performance numbers are debated in pubs the world over, but this is what I figure:
4 seats vs 2 seats (though the back seats on the BGT are pretty useless unless you have kids)
hard top vs soft hood
hatch back vs boot
12.2 seconds and vs 13 second 0-60 time and 18.3 second quarter-mile
95ish HP and 110 Torque vs 85HP and 80 torques (ish, very ish)
4 speed with possible overdrive vs 4 speed with no overdrive
91 inch wheel base vs 80 inch wheel base
60 inch width vs inch width
153 inch length vs 137 inch length
~2310 vs ~1620 pounds
PTWR of 24 pounds per horsepower vs PTWR of 19 PpHP, but somehow the BGT has a better 0 to 60 time and higher quarter mile speed? Horse Pucky.
As the owner of a 77 Midget, and four AH Sprites (a 58, 59 and 2x 60s only one of which is driveable) I prefer the Midget and the sound of the A series engine is superior to the sound of the B or the Triumph 1500, but it would be nice to have the extra space once in a while, so why not own both? Or an MG C too, or an MG C GT while you're at it? But not a T series, those things are dogs. No offense to the many many T-series owners, two car-club buddies have TAs, I can think of several with TDs and TFs, many have Bs, a few B GTs, a bunch of Midgets and Sprites and then a bunch of other random LBCs thrown in, including some old Volvos, Ghias etc.
Not counting OD transmissions in the BGT or swapping in a 5 speed into the Midget, etc, they both have their niche. If your goal is versatility, then get the B GT because it can run more comfortably in more conditions? Even that's debatable. A buddy has a CGT for sale, with a fresh-rebuilt straight 6, but needs some body work and reassembly, I'm trying my best to avoid him.

@@SirDrifto @SirDrifto next time. I'll fly out to CO or drive my bugeye and you can compare it. She's awfully loud, not enough power, but pretty cute until you get too close. Anywho, nothing beats looking down that bonnet on these cars! Best view in town. Now you need to review MG A, TA, TD, TF, MG F the more modern car from the 80s, and on and on, fun stuff!
G'day from Australia. Great programme, I've got a lovely 67 GT with a period Tudor Webasto sliding sunroof which makes all the difference. It is painted in a GT only colour called Sandy Beige (not found on the roadster). I bought this car in 1984 and sold it in 1988. 36 years later I found it by chance 4 sale and bought it back last April - how about that! It's still in great condition, the four owners who had it after me all looked after it.

No shots pf the engines. My guess is the GT has one of the absolutely ridiculous downdraft Webers.. Hence the sound and all the black soot.
The Midget is cool one of the rear round arch models. Just spent a year restoring one... 5 speed Datsun gear box, highly modified 1275, wild street cam, custom exhaust from England.. lots of other goodies. Completely stripped and blasted.. everything the right way.
Midgets are fun but the MGB is more practical and a better "fit" for most drivers.

You may not get where you are going as fast in a British or Italian sports car but the ride is 💯 per centmote exciting!!!!! Also you may not get there at all!! You have to understand that these cars require a little more maintenance than American or Japanese cars. I'm on the lookout for one of each of these and looking forward to owning one again !!!
I had a '72 GT about 12 years ago. I just bought a '73 Midget about 2 weeks back!!! Enjoyed your conversation - and particularly liked the American railroad noises off camera.

What are you running the MGB GT on , ever its timing is not set up or the jets on the carbs are wrong.
Plus the MGB GT doesn’t sound right it sounds like it’s blowing on the pipes .
I’m lucky enough to own both of these cars. A 73 RWA Midget and a 74 BGT. Both of which I have owned since the late 80’s early 90’s. Great to see you enjoying owning and using both of them. Loving the roof rack and retro skis. I used to own and ski on a set of skis similar to those back in the day. Both are great little cars and very different to drive. Our roads over here in the UK are great for driving MGs particularly here in Shropshire, mostly narrow and twisty. Keep up the good work guys.
That said, I have a good portion of the stuffing out of my Midget seats, lowering your eyeline below the window frame. I'm not quite 6' tall. Swapped out the exhaust manifold, heat-wrapped it, removed the resonator and anything short of the muffler, swapped out a single 32/36 DGEV carb which helps the 1500 motor breathe, debumpered it, swapped out the steering wheel for a smaller one, added a sway-bar to the front, all of which significantly improved performance of my Midget.
In one of my Bugeyes, added a sway bar, straight pipes, weber carb, and a ford T9 (really helps), those, along with some other modifications are drawing the most performance out of the 948, and keeps the car stuck to the curves nicely, and yet allowing it to reach highway speeds comfortably. The other ones will have a "fast" 1098, a cammed 1275 and probably a bone stock 948 one day, when I can get off my ass and restore them (I literally just have to pick an engine from storage, rebuild it, pick a transmission, and finish bolting the parts on one of the bugeyes and then I'll have two on the road).
The latest in the MG Car Club around here is to put an aluminum block 215 Buick v8 in it, or a stroker-kit and bored out to bring it to a 327, etc etc etc, those wind up being insane.
