I always tell my students that I would rather see a semi good singer performing a song than a perfect singer just singing...this is a perfect example!

He throws Cathy's name at her like it's a swear word,
He also does a good American accent.
He won an Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor for "Company".

Like Marc said, he had me so captivated, and then he yells Cathy and please out at the end and it makes me jump. Like dude, I was on your side, but then the aggression is too much to take (but the perfect acting choice, if that makes sense.)

Finally someone that sees the extreme importance of that one line. He killed his mariage with that one line. They might have been able to work it out if they communicated long before that line shot out of his mouth or directly afterward.

Thank you for articulating what it is about this performance that really caught and held my attention the whole way through. I first heard of Jonathan through his voice role in the videogame Final Fantasy XIV, oddly enough, and he was such an extraordinary stand-out even using just his voice that I had to know what else he'd done -- imagine how happy I was, as a huge musical theatre fan, to discover this performance. I'm glad he's coming into the spotlight now thanks to Bridgerton, it's thoroughly well-deserved.

@@stephpiano2908 I was thinking in Crashing also, don't knew about this caracter but I can easily see the
similarity in Sam and Anthony (Bridgerton). Seem like a theme in his career aparently. It has to be the power he has in making them likeable in the evolution (not just sexy or cute, likeable!) is incredible, in the final scene you just forget what an asshole he was, probably what will happen to Anthony (the story is right there in the book and he already show how
capable he is). I don't know about this character and the show but this number.. it moves you through a lot of emotions and is not a fight, is an argument to the point that someone maybe can think he has a point, his point.

if you have not seen him in 'crashing,' (early pheobe waller bridge) i encourage you to vide it. as the series runs, he deals with his sexuality in such an interesting way. also, a shortie. watch his win at the bafta's for 'company'...especially the little trick he pulls when his name is called, which is do delightful. i can see why stephen sondheim, 3 days before he died, found out that bailey was going to be in the london 'company,' and he stopped in his tracks, and said 'be still my beating heart.' patti lupone also raves about him. this guy is going far.

Marc, just want to remind you how much I enjoy your "classes." Always something to learn. Had no idea Jonathan could sing. He obviously was prepared for this audition to the point that it did not feel performed. It seemed genuine and he was living/singing in the moment. As far as the voice, I question his "airy" breathy quality. I'm not sure if it is deliberate or just a reflection of what his voice really is. A breathy/spread voice can be used stylistically but it can too often be a sign of either poor technique or an untrained voice. The breathier the sound, the dryer the vocal chords or folds and in time can be damaging to the voice. Listening to his audition, I tend to think that he is naturally, at this time, doing his best and what his voice is capable of doing. It doesn't sound/appear to me that he his able to have a more focused, clear, easy sound which would be an indication of a controlled voice and intelligent singer. I will admit that I am partial to a voice that is not spread/breathy/airy. So, I am mixed with his vocals but sold on his non vocal performance. I continue to wait for you.

What I love most about that musical is the fact that it is written in a way that makes us realize that they both are at fault and they both made mistakes and what might have saved them would have been communication and seeing things from the others perspective . And by not letting them sing together except for the beginning song and the wedding song as well as letting them tell just their individual story from their viewpoint in their songs it becomes clear that they clearly had a lack of communication on both parts.
