I preordered this absolute no-brainer the moment I saw it was on the store. Almost 25% off... Myst was such a banger, and many call Riven the best game of the series. Looking forward to it! :)
What i love the most is all the changes they made to the puzzles and Level Design, it's gonna feel like playing a new game even if i remember the OG perfectly! :D
I showed the VR remake of Myst to my kids and their friends. They are used to games where you run around like a madman. They just ran around, pushing buttons and pulling levers, to no benefit to them. I tried to tell them that Myst games are not like that. You have to slow down, stop and pay attention to everything around you. It is a puzzle game... not a fast paced shooter. Back in the day, we used notebooks to keep notes about the various areas and puzzles. Very good to see the remakes in VR. Looks great in the Quest 3. I tried the newer games like Obduction and Firmament, but to me, they lack the charm and artistry of the older games.
How is it looking so good in this video? Just tried it on my quest 3, and it looked utterly terrible. Like im talking almost unplayably bad. Did you somehow wind up with an early version of the upcoming quest 3 patch?
@1:19 a text box appears in the sky - I tried to do a screenshot and zoom in on it but could not quite make it out - just curious is you knew what it said? - God Bless
This looks great! I was hoping there wouldn't be a huge step down in quality from the PC version and it doesn't seem like they've had to sacrifice much.
It was obvious but it still has very good graphics for a Quest game. Water is what is more noticeable, then reduction of geometry details, then textures quality, but very better than Myst without doubts.
Played this as a child when it first came out. I didn't know how it was, just saw good graphics and expected some cool RPG with multipe disks to finish. I made it about an hour before I turned it off and never tried it again. If I was older I would've appreciated it more
I played Quest with the cheat book long ago on my PC then too. That’s the only way that I like games like this. I just want to see the graphics, not get ‘puzzled’ and stuck.
I remember both myst and the other games coming out and at the time they had revolutionary graphics and sound scapes. I dont know if I will get the standalone or the pcvr version of riven. I would love the stand alone but if I feel that if the graphics are a step down then I think I will buy the pcvr version instead. I look forward to some side by side comparisons.
as far as I can tell, we're living so far off in the future that even mobile chips do better graphics than CGs from games back then... so I can't care less to being tethered to old big noisy hot box to get a few more shadows and shine...
You're calling it standalone here at 0:37, but this doesn't appear to be standalone given the black banding a second earlier like you were playing it either wirelessly or with a link cable. So which is it really?
@@echelon2k8you get that black banding either if putting the GPU under heavy load - like maybe going for higher resolution - or for capturing video with stabilization options that actually crop the images...
Is this one of those puzzle games where you need to read 9+ in-game books and keep an IRL notepad full of notes? I like puzzle games but I've never played these games.
Books are only for plot here. In the original clues were in sketches on books, not in text. You can red them if you want to immerse more in the narrative.
I know a lot of people have never heard of or have played this game, but I had it back when it first came out in the 90’s lol. The crazy thing is the graphics of this in game game engine running VR on a mobile device looks better than the graphics did in the pre-rendered cut scenes that were the transition points between the puzzles in the original. Crazy how far we’ve come.
Probably you don’t remember pre-rendered graphics in Riven. Even PC version doesn’t match the quality of each single render of the original Riven, i admit it is very close, and may be better in just few cases. Quest version is very good (for a Quest game) but it sucks compared to original pre-rendered graphics, that only limit is the low resolution of its time. What really makes the difference is now you are IN the game, and this means a lot!
@@AtrusDesign I’m also viewing this on a phone screen lol. My point was more of look how far we’ve come to have this portable thing on our head that can achieve these things, not splitting hairs over which has the better graphics.
Why does every channel that owes their very existence to the Quest headsets feel it necessary to CONSTANTLY throw shade at the headset's standalone performance?

I can't over-emphasize how much this game means to me (superfan) but when you know everything about the original, spotting woke, modern-gaming alterations is painfully easy. I sent them a salty email to which they probably won't respond. They took the painstaking work of "The Starry Expanse Project" (total fidelity to the original) and introduced a bit of woke poison on top and I'm flabbergasted they would think that's okay. Not buying. 😭
@@orionburch That's one of them, yep. I also felt that they'd race-swapped Cho for no reason at all, and "Many ages... infinite truths." which is not established canon, as far as I'm aware. Smacks of postmodern bulls*** to me.
@@mistersurrealist Well, not in this case. In this case they took a darker-skinned islander and made him clearly white, which doesn't make sense on a sunny island world. But, he's obviously subservient and his only act is to commit theft, so I feel they changed him for that reason. He's an ANIMATED character, so they did NOT have to.
