Greatest bunch of guys I had the pleasure ow working with. I was on tour with Umoja / Image for 6 months in 86 as their sound engineer. Donovan our own (Jimmy Hendrix, Godrey the rock steady, Don our Rick Wakeman, Jimmy our Jaco Pastorius, Cello "Chico" our Prince, great band ahead of their time in cultural mix of SA. Great time wonderful memories ❤
Thanks for posting! I've had the privilege of spending time with Don Knox. I still believe that our SA music industry has forgotten the role played by these groups in the 80s..at the height of apartheid. These guys kept us dancing, hopeful and made us forget about the sadness which was engulfing the country.
Right now in SA, musicians are pre-occupied with filling venues. Yet bands like this one, Brenda Fassie, Lucky Dube and many others fill Ellis Park without much effort. Their music and presence sold tickets. There was no social networks those days. Great entertainers.
Umoja ladies and gentlemen. I love the group.......... Oneness yes Oneness with the voice of Bra Donovan Knox from KZN and the bass by Om Alec Khaoli. What a beauty
That's Donovan Knox... the legend who arrived in Jozi from Durban with just his guitar in the early 1980s. Have spent hours talking to him about music. He now stays in Los Angeles...
My favorite band I remember their songs Chicco, you got to be my girl, Let's get up, the look in your eyes, hiwiye, jika and tell me. Don Laka was roboting/breakdancing in this video. Thanks for the post, Anyone got CJB, Freeway?
Dennis Kganyago on keyboards, Don Laka on keyboards doing the breakdance, Donovan Knox on guitar and vocals, Om Alec Khaoli on bass. To complete the Image band, later renamed Ymage, we replace Om Alec Khaoli on bass with Jimmy Mngwandi, who in this very musical spectacle was playing bass for Sipho Hotstix Mabuse and Harare. We then add Benjamin Dube and Sello Chicco Twala on vocals
Dear real mzantsi music lovers please advise me. I thought this song was sung by Image instead of Umoja. Either way this is the legacy we will forever be proud of. This is the time when the so called international acts were overshadowed by our local lads.
Donovan stayed at Chicco's mother 's house and after Om Alec Khaoli took Donovan for Umoja, chicco was introduced and he learned fast , the rest is history
No tattoos, not fat, no big bellies, no skin lightning etc. That's how real our yesteryear artists were. Just look at the performance and the number of the people who attended. And its a full band,,,unlike what we see these days where untalented, uncreative artists just play a CD and sing after it. They do that while running across the stage like rats because they can't dance.

That was after they left Umoja and formed Image 😊
UMOJA BAPTISED THE LIKES OF THE GREAT OM ALEEC KHAOLI MUSICALLY SPEAKING. BIG UP TO THE GREAT UMOJA❤
The likes of Don Laka on keys and Godfrey Mcina on percussion and drums. Those were the days 😢
Apartheid at its highest level couldn't not separate South Africans as music brought them together, thanks to our 80's artists

Thanks you know so much about our old musicians I like it that Donovan takes a good great care of himself. He is not aging.

I randomly found this and I was shocked to see how little information there is about this band. This song is amazing
