The remote islands that are critical to a UK bet on wind energy

- Scotland offers some of the windiest conditions in Europe, making the Shetland Islands, located in the northernmost region of the U.K., the best place to develop and harvest wind energy.
To that end, British power firm SSE has invested millions into what will be the country’s largest onshore wind farm when it is completed in 2024.
The Viking wind farm, with its 103 turbines, could power almost half a million homes.
Alistair Phillips-Davies, CEO of SSE, said that energy security is paramount.
“We don’t want to be importing oil and gas from far-flung places that we no longer want to deal with and when we no longer trust the regimes,” Phillips-Davies told CNBC.
However, a lack of capacity in the U.K.’s power grid could derail its ambitious goal of being carbon-free by 2030.
We visited the Viking wind farm that has been in the making for more than 15 years to find out more.

Προς ενημέρωσή σας. Η Δανία, το Βέλγιο, η Γερμανία και η Ολλανδία συμφώνησαν και υπέγραψαν τη συμφωνία "The North Sea Summit" όπου 220 εκατομμύρια Ευρωπαίοι υψηλής κατανάλωσης ενέργειας πρόκειται να μεταβούν σε πράσινη ηλεκτρική ενέργεια χωρίς εκπομπές, τοποθετώντας παράκτια πάρκα ανεμόμυλων σε μεγάλες ομάδες στη Βόρεια Θάλασσα. Αυτά θα καλωδιωθούν σε νησιά τεχνητής ενέργειας που επίσης θα κατασκευαστούν. Τα ενεργειακά νησιά θα συγκεντρώσουν την ηλεκτρική ενέργεια και θα τη στείλουν στην ξηρά. Θα στεγάζει συνεργεία συντήρησης και σέρβις ΚΑΙ θα έχει πράσινη παραγωγή καυσίμων όπως υδρογόνο και μεθανόλη. Ένας χερσαίος ανεμόμυλος έχει κατά μέσο όρο το 7% των περιπτώσεων να στέκεται ακίνητος λόγω έλλειψης ανέμου, αλλά με έναν ανεμόμυλο στην ξηρά αυτό το ποσοστό είναι 3! Αυτό σημαίνει ότι η παραγωγή πράσινου υδρογόνου όταν ο άνεμος είναι άφθονο και η ηλεκτρική ενέργεια φθηνή και η χρήση αυτού και για την αντιστάθμιση όταν δεν υπάρχει άνεμος και για την πώληση ως πράσινα καύσιμα για αυτοκίνητα, φορτηγά, τρένα και αεροπλάνα. Η συμφωνία κορυφής της Βόρειας Θάλασσας είναι το μεγαλύτερο έργο ενεργειακής μετάβασης στον κόσμο. Θα παράγει περισσότερη πράσινη ενέργεια από οπουδήποτε αλλού στον κόσμο και η προβλεπόμενη παραγωγή πράσινου υδρογόνου θα είναι πολλές φορές υψηλότερη από την παραγωγή πράσινου υδρογόνου από όλους τους πλανήτες αυτή τη στιγμή.
Το έργο έχει προτεραιότητα και θα τεθεί σε λειτουργία σε μια δεκαετία. 220 εκατομμύρια άνθρωποι! Ίσως μια ιδέα και για την Ελλάδα. Φαίνεται ότι χρειάζεστε κάποιες μεγάλες επενδύσεις που δημιουργούν τοπικές θέσεις εργασίας και επιταχύνετε τη μετάβασή σας σε ενέργεια και χρήση χωρίς εκπομπές ρύπων. Πάμε πάμε πάμε!

The UK hasn't ever used Russian gas. The guy's talking garbage. Wind turbines do not reduce the cost of electricity to the consumer as the generators supply it to the grid at gas prices.
But UK bought electricity from other countries who use Russian Gas.
@@TheRavilKlimov The UK imports electricity mainly from France that is predominantly a nuclear generator. Norway is hydro and Belgium and Netherlands are mainly nuclear, wind and dutch gas. The Germans were the main importers of russkie gas and the UK has no interconnector with Germany, although is planned along with one to Denmark.
A bet that they are already losing. The whole scam is falling down.
Windpower is dumb. Solar is the best by far.
Depends where you are. Having both sounds like a sensible option.
UK need the most electricity when the sun shines the least. Wind power works well at night and winter too.

@@Lando-kx6so may be soon back to reality. The UK was rich because of Indians working their ass off 100 years ago. Now you need an Indian to work his ass off to make it stable.
Better to deal with the EU than the UK.
We'll see what happens if ukraine falls to Russia. Wonder what the EU will ask of the UK then.
