Walking 2 miles might not seem like a lot, but when you're over 600 pounds and relying on that walk for each and every one of your meals, it's a different story. "Drastic" might be a word that comes to mind when you think of taking that trek to and from your local Walmart for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but for Pasquale "Pat" Brocco, it was a major step in a life-changing journey.
What began as a childhood habit of fast-food-fueled overeating quickly became scary after Pat's doctor said the words "pre-diabetic," "high blood pressure," and "gastric bypass." He may have taken baby steps at first, but Pat eventually shed over 300 pounds in three years. This is his story.
Why did you decide to transform?
A little over three years ago, I was a bodyguard touring with a notable comedian. We placed a friendly bet on the NBA finals, and the loser had to do 50 push-ups. I lost. When I attempted to crank out my punishment, I couldn't even do one push-up. This happened in a room full of people, mostly ladies, and it was embarrassing. I was supposed to be protecting them, and I couldn't even do one push-up. To add insult to injury I was in front of a comedian, so you can just imagine how that went.
I stayed on tour for about six more months and then finally decided to go to a doctor. I couldn't weigh myself on home scales, so I had no idea what to expect. The doctor told me I was 605 pounds, prediabetic, morbidly obese, and had high blood pressure. He suggested I consider gastric bypass! It was one of the scariest, eye-opening moments of my life. I was 28 and making my death bed.
Did you head home and automatically change?
I emotionally ate for about a week. Then, one morning, I looked at my reflection when getting out the of shower. I was ashamed of what I saw. My stomach hung to my thighs, and my breasts were huge. I knew I couldn't live like this anymore. I needed to change, and that's exactly what I did.
I headed straight for the kitchen, emptied my cabinets and refrigerator, and threw all the junk food away. At 600 pounds, I couldn't do much in terms of exercise, so I decided to walk to get every meal I ate. I knew I'd get hungry 3-4 times a day, and I used that feeling to motivate me to my destination. When it was time to eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner, I'd walk a mile to Walmart and a mile back. I did that for my first 60 days.

I’ve been a big guy all my life. I had just turned 19 years old, 6 foot and 350 lbs. I was at home eating McDonald’s when I noticed this video in my recommended (even thought I had never watched fitness videos on UA-cam) seeing this beasts story set a fire in me I didn’t know was there.
I took a hard look at myself, and realized not just what I was doing to my body, but my legacy, I wanted to be remembered as the BUFF guy not the big guy. Fed up with my obesity I went to the gym that night for the first time in my life.
1 year (and a lot of hard work) later and I’m proud to say I’ve finally hit my goal weight of 190 lbs! I’ve still got a long way to go to be my best self, but I welcome the challenge.
Grateful for guys like Pat to be around showing us boys what it takes to be a real man.

Who can tell me what I need to do?". The truth about obesity should be revealed. People keep telling it is not healthy, bla bla bla... Facts need to be shared. Starting from bad circulation of blood in your legs, which lead to a number of other issues, to all the illness, where obese people are exponentially more vulnerable. Heart, Lunge, kidneys are overloaded. and so on.
If anyone accepts that, it's their choice, but why would anyone else have to accept it?

This is your spiritual act of worship, that you do not conform any more tp the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
God doesent care about you being flawless but he wants you find your true identy in him. When you start focusing on who he is and who you are in him you'll start to be transformed. And holy means to be set apart, not some impossible spiritual plane.

    Large fry

Thank you for sharing your story Pat! The struggle is so real and you are right, I don't think people fully understand. I have lost a total of 30 pounds now and have been working my way down from 570. I have found accountability through my weekly videos and encouragement through different channels.

I work security, I'll be turning 29 soon. Weigh 298lbs, I'm a father of 3 girls. My goal, is to loose 98lbs, and work on my upper body. It's an on going battle for a couple years now, but I'm not quitting.

Thank you. I'm having an "intervention" of sorts for my daughter next week. She needs to loose and loose a lot unfortunately. But I've already told her, she won't do it alone! I'll be right next to her ever push up, every sit up, every curl, every step. Not bc i need to loose alot, but just bc i want to support her and also bc i feel as her mother, maybe i contributed in some way. After all, i do the shopping and the cooking! So next week, my whole household will start not a diet, but a whole new way of living! We have a lot to live for! Thank you for inspiring me as well as I'm sure her as soon as i make her watch this! Lol. Please, just praying she is ready and accepts it. Bc we all know, you gotta want it, you gotta be in that place that says, no more! In order to truly turn around. Thank you, again, so much! God bless and congrats!
