The Nubass seems to be a cross between a 303, a Stylophone and a 1940s valve radio.
This is really the video that I was waiting for!!! I have a bit of a volca setup going on and I thought the Volca NuBass was a bit wack at first but you totally made me change my mind!
Love the NuBass. Really quick to come up with fun patterns. Never noticed the green LED with saturation. Now staring deeply into the NuTube... Great video.
Hell, love the break down here, this is deep and helps me as a consumer understand what define the two products.
"Although given enough MDMA who knows?" hahahahaha brilliant
Excellent compare & contrast video, thank you!
Thanks for comparing these two. I would love to hear a "bass line batt'e". Use the same sequence between these 2, novation bass station II and if you can get the Erica Synth Bassline, that would be sweet!!!
You are my hero, I was exactly looking into this and here it is ; Thanks !
I do not need one but my neighbour needs a simple acid machine and the nubass is in his price range (plus he already have another volca)
I need one, but my neighbour probably would have a differing opinion about me getting one! :)
There is nothing that is more annoying than a person tweaking live and trying out different patterns on something that is like the 303 where you mostly twiddle around with filter cut-off, resonance and distortion in THAT acid house kind of way (or some psy-trance backing or whatever.
Without headphones!
I had a neighbour like that in the mid 90:s when living in a dorm/student apartment/corridor here in Sweden. He said he had to hear his music from his (gigantic) speakers when coming up with (politely termed) "songs". Hours of squeals, bleeps and just general annoyances together with the deep kick that shaked the room.
My room that is!
And not in the middle of the day either, often late evenings into the night.
Totally agree with Carr that acid house was made due to the annoying limitations and "user-unfriendliness"of the Sequencer.
I'm actually really impressed by the Volca... did not expect to like it at all but it sounds cool.
Loved discovering you and I subbed.
Excellent comparison and I thought it was honest, witty and basically well done, even when negotiating embarrassing technical ground hum.
The 303 and Roland sound was so well designed it's hard to improve but you documented the differences well. The 303 has that env mod slide on every note and is generally rounder or rubberier while the Nubass here sounded sharp and precise ,with more range. Sometimes a bit too piecing ,more isn't always better here (rez) but you showed off the sub osc and lfo well.
Good stuff Starsky and as a fellow scouser it was lovely to hear the accent so well represented- articulate, not too rambling but clear and funny (without trying too hard). You may of found a YT niche.
Sweet.
Thank you. You helped me a lot to decide which one I'm gonna go with .
Great video as always !! Thanks!! Stay safe!!
Awesome stuff. Helps me understand my Nubass more in depth. Thanks!
Thanks.
I'm very impressed with the TD3 for the price point. I don't mind the 303 style programming and will admit because of its idiosyncrasies you 'accidentally' come up with amazing lines just like they did back in '89.
I have it hooked up to a bass amp and the sound is strong! I've mostly been playing around with it just by itself with some 909 emulator patterns and the hands on knobs feel great. If you really want to have fun and rock 'live' with some acid its a great little synth.
Td-3 sounds like Acid. At best, volca sounds like a volca, for better or worse.
If I want that classic acid bass I’m all over the Td-3.
If I want versatility, the volca takes the lead.
Great comparison!
Good discussion! I'd often prefer a new instrument than a "direct clone", like the bass, env. of the V NB
Thanks for the video, great comparison as always. For me Nubass is a little more organic, but it's a question of taste, both machines are great. By the way really looking forward for Erica Synths Bassline DB-01, although it's in a different price range. Demos sounds really interesting.
Your videos are always a fun Journey
As possibly silly as it is, something that *looks* like a real 303 just gives me a buzz that the Nubass doesn't (plus I keep reading it as "nub ass")
Damn it, now i will forever read it as the Volca Nub Ass
Lol
@@octoechos Damn it, I will now.
Thanks a lot for your demo.
Thanks Starsky!😎🙌
I love 303 sounds with heavy diatortion. I never get tired of how it sounds
Thanks for this comparison 👍
Really good impartial review. Just ordered the Nubass mainly because of the size-I have limited workspace but this will squeeze in somewhere nicely
How it going?
As someone who still regrets selling the originals 20 years ago of course i got the behringer, didnt want to start with electronics again but at this price i couldnt resist getting this and the 606
Great exposition. I had my heart set on the Behringer, because I really want a 303 (or as close as you can get without spending crazy money). But maybe I need to get *another* Volca series synth...
The TD-3 is bigger than I expected. Going by my trademarked 'Volca Standard Measurement (VSM)'.
yeah it's about 1.7 VSM
@@StarskyCarr Brilliant. I expect this measurement to be included in all future output. A small nominal commission fee will be invoiced at the end of the year. Nothing to worry about.
The Nubass sound really nice! When you tweak lfo rate or lfo intensity, on the Nubass, do you get a value jump when attack/EG int were set to different values or does it pick up at the actual value? Like when attack was set t 0, lfo rate is set somewhere at 12 o clock, you hold function and turn the knob, does lfo rate jump to 0?
Thank you for that, exactly what i was looking for.
I want to build a small setup around my korg monologue and i'm still not sure whether to go with td-3+sd-6 or volca (nu)bass+beats.
I love the volca Line, have 6 of them myself. Drum, Kick, keys, FM, Modular and Bass. This volca Nubass sounds nice and the addition of a suboscilator is quite Nice. But volca bass with theirs 3 osc is mindblowing. Nubass is not. Also have the TD 3 and its a quite Nice synth. I love that crazy sequencer. Nice review, thank your for your time. Subscribed.
So wich i can take for put near the electribe sampler 2?? TD 3 ? TD 3 mo? Or Korg monologue or Korg volka nubass or something else ??? Thanks
Thanks Starsky! And keep safe!
quick question ...i like the td-3 better btw ...can i use the td3 as a midi to cv convert? cheers,,, my setup minilogue xd to td3 via cv with akai mpk249 and kaoss pad plus aftertouch
Great demo. Think my trial of td-3 will be finished in favour to Nubass. Thanks
I'ts good that you play td-3 on a keyboard, but how many octaves does it have? and are any of the controls CC (Control Change)
Chemical Brothers copyright strike incoming!
lol At 15:21 I was thinking the same thing... sounds like the filter sweeps in Playground for a Wedgeless Firm. Copyright bots are on their way xD
Chemical Bros first single is a fucking rip off of 23 skidoo
Or is it the Dust Brothers? lol
Great vid..I like the dyn sync RE 303 but the price is crazy...the Td3 sounds great thow...The volca is very intresting too...
I am leaning towards the volca sound but I have a question. I have a Crave which has a ladder filter like volca so I am thinking do I actually need the volca? I think the Crave can output some sh 101 styled acid especially if I output it via my bass od pedal.
For a moment at the end there I was back in the 90s dancing with glow sticks
Just picked up my own TD3. Love it. I was looking at the Nubass, and frankly I’m glad I went with the TD3. The character is quirky and hilarious, whereas for me, the Nubass isn’t 303 enough to have the charm and also isn’t flexible enough to do its own thing.
HI great video, Can I connect a midi controller directly to the td3 and play the effects on it without a computer? Thanks
Brilliant job - thank you!
You're very welcome 😀
Great video
I pair my TD-3 with my vocals all the time. I was thinking of getting a 2nd TD-3 to mod, but I’d be well off just getting the NuBaSs and getting more variation.
what do u mean pair ?
Wonderful video thanks! I'm going to be ready for my happy yellow TD-3 just as soon as it ships later this month!!! I think I'm going to be very happy with it :D
Thanks for the upload. Nice to hear someone from the North West on UA-cam.
You have to open the envelope on both to get the filter at it's most open position otherwise the waveforms will be smoothed off.
Just using the nubass as an acid machine is selling it short. It's capable of some deliciously 70's ish leads.
What oscilloscope software is that? 3:55
It looks awesome!
How did you connect the keyboard? The td3 has no bluetooth.
big questions here boys. Already have a volca drum and a few keyboards (no more space for keys). Buying a volca modular and another little box synth or sequencer. Torn between the Korg SQ1(just to control modular) the Behringer TD3 and the Korg Bass/Nubass.
Can the Behringer TD3 send sounds to the Modular and be controlled through the modular? Also is the nubass/bass (which one is better between the two volca bass?) a better option than the TD3 because of functionality with the other volcas I'll have?
Thanks sorry to hit you with the big ones just bending my brain over it
I have the Volca Drum & NuBass, it's just a wonderful pair!
Happy with that. Helped me decided which one to spend my pocket money on. Volca for me. Cheers. Time for some Big fish Little fish. Now where's my glow sticks?
Hi, how to make a pattern in different scale in the TD3? Thanks in avance ! 🙏
Motion control record function for the win
Great review I just bought the TD-3 Yellow from Music Matter then I was in 2 minds to buy a 2nd TD-3 Blue or a Volca Nubass so I decided to buy a 2nd TD-3 in Blue Lol
lol
@@m4nuz lol
How are you controlling the TD-3? Is there a PC in between the microKEY Air and the synth?
Yes. It’s MIDI’d via a laptop
@@StarskyCarr thanks!
IMO the motion sequencing and parameter automation put the NuBass above the TD-3.
only for you
@@hansmuller1980 lol definitely not ONLY for me. Dumb comment 😂
@@TransistorBased “lmao” if you use it right, you can get far more experimental with the motion sequencing than you can otherwise. Try it out sometime.
Bit late in, sorry. I have a question. I grew up in the 80s and loved the early synth movement stuff. House killed this and I have as such developed a loathing for it. Now, all of the current bass synths seem to be 303 replicas (Volca Bass to an extent, TD3, TB-03, TB-3). Is there any bass synth around which *doesn't* sound like a 303. I'm in the market for something completely different. Cheers.
Hi VimWolf, the TD-3 can be flexible in its sound. Check out my song that has it playing the bass, lead and fills in a slower tempo chill format. Im not an acid fan so it was fun to try and see what it could do outside that genre. ua-cam.com/video/g8xRUeA6KU0/v-deo.html
The Nubass actually doesn't go out of its way to make acid lines or tones. You will be surprised at the different non acidic sounds you can make with the Nubass just simply by understanding it's parameters.
Hi....i have am electribe 2 sampler red One.....wich synth i can put near to It?? TD 3 , TD 3 mo or volka nubass or Korg monologue?? Thanks
from those I would go with the Monologue... its much more flexible. unless you're dead set on a 303 style box. Monologue isn't best for that, but you can still do acid-style squelches, but not as authentic as the others... lots of that it to do with the way you put accents and glides on the sequence on the 303.
It is not batman it is "Darkwing Duck" ;)
It might be just me but the Volca sounds so much better to my ears. I guess it's a matter of what kind of sound you're actually after.
"Just tweak it to death," So funny yet So true! writing songs with these, even drum machines, never seemed to work for me. I mean, where is the spontaneous genius that comes about with a giant pattern? The TD3 is absolutely amazing!
As he was saying that whole bit I instantly went "Yup, pretty much how it came to be.".
I don't understand, is your Mac making the midi bridge between your TD-3 and the MicroKey ?
Yes
@@StarskyCarr Thanks...
Do you think can you switch or change the tube of the Korg. I have vintage GE tubes from the 60’s
Haha not a chance... have you seen the size of these things :). They’re not like vintage or ‘standard’ tubes but are designed for an ICB. Clever stuff, but no way interchangeable.
Starsky Carr wow what a shame, I was planing to buy one and change the tube for a sweater sound 😞👍🏻
I think if you can mix the bass osc down it won't sound as dark.
"In the House" (literally for 3 weeks) the Volca is a little beast. The price is amazing. I was talking to friend just a few days ago about the original TB. I wanted one of the originals way back when, solely for its pattern memory. I eventually went with the Roland MC202 which has a nicer synth section but no sequencer memory, but tape load function for the sequencer. I see the Roland TB as a one trick Pony. Ironically I would have bought the TB for its sequence memory and programmed full songs on it. I recall it was expensive in comparison to the MC202. Some of the volcas are amazing for there demeanor.
Hope you and your Fam Stay Safe.
Tez
Thanks Tez, stay safe yourself :)
Good reviews the Korg Volca is not a path on the TD3 is simply does not have the magical sound as the TB-303/TD3 has. Im going to buy 2x TD3's.
The 303 was the first Volca
I thought the first Volca was the Stylophone!
Love the Wink flashback!
Never thought I'd hear Paul Hollywood reviewing small synths
Wait until I put it in the oven.. delicious.. makes everything sound a little warmer.
Interesting how Korg have had to adapt their pricing of the NuBass since the TD-3 came out. I thought that Korg priced the original Volcas sensibly at around the £130 mark, but then they brought out the Volca Modular, Drum & NuBass and hiked the price to £150+, the NuBass RRP is £179. Thank you Behringer for forcing Korg's hand. Now the NuBass is sensibly priced it is back on my list. You put the star in Starsky mate, thank you for this comparison. I wondered how long it would take for someone to do it. I know the price bracket is different, but I wonder how the two compare with the Erica synths DB-01? Keep up the good work lad.
Interesting, I'll see if I can get hold of the Erica DB-01. Cheers.
In Europe, dealers set their own price...its the law!
Nice to see that there's proper accent on the Korg Volca Nubass. Something missing on the Korg Volca Bass. It's possible with some midi implementation on the latter though.
Great demonstration! I want both :)
can i make a factory reset of the td3 directly and not on the synthool ? synthool dont recognize the td3 .
No idea sorry, but if it’s knackered they have I think 2 or 3 year warranty. Not ideal but at least it’s a solution.
Aww I have seen this test question before, I know the answer is C)- ALL OF THE ABOVE!! Yes I will be buying ALL OF THE ABOVE!!! Love the price point on that TD-3 especially.
am i listening to a legowelt song around the first minutes? it really remind me something from him but i can't understand if it's a Legowelt track or not,if it is,track id?!
Raffaele Capone haha it’s all Starsky... just a couple of little jams I made for the video, using both synths a TR09 and Juno 106
It's pretty obvious to me that the volca is more versatile, especially if you have other volcas. The volca can do everything the TD-3 can do, but the TD has more of the classic 303 transistor based acid sound, while the volca is darker and more resonant. Since these guys are the same price, it seems like the volca is the move for easier sequencing and more diverse sound selection.
You keep mentioning the TD-3s traditional programming technique when there is also the SynthTool app which makes it very easy to make sequences
Yeah, I should’ve added something about that. But was focusing on the hands on experience while I was recording. The app is REALLY useful. :)
Starsky Carr Great video as always though! Just thought Id mention!
Sequencer in Nubass seems so much better. Been looking for this sort of sequencer . TD works like every old piece of equpment - do change, commit, play, reflect on what you've done. Rinse and repeat. NUbass seems to be cool piece to improvise on. So its either Nubass or Oldbass. I wonder if the accent is worth it.
They’ve both got accent btw... something I omitted to demo.
@@StarskyCarr TD 3 /303 is a no-no for me. I had enough of RB 338 in my life. Now I don't have THAT much time in my life for that sequencer.
I was referring to Volca Bass vs Volca Nubass. Can you select step in Volca sequencer and change only that note for example ? Or move prev/next step in step edit mode ? Can you step edit while sequencer running ?
mic indir I’ve not found a way to change the pitch of a single step, but you can do everything while it’s running - transpose octaves add accents and slides, turn steps on/off etc.
@@StarskyCarr but you can punch notes on keyboard while its running, right?
Does the nubass let you do triplets? The Volcas being stuck to 8 or 16th notes has been a limited factor about them for me. Of course you can do it the hard way by setting a different BPM and shortening the pattern to 12 steps, but I really wish a few more tempo options were in the machines.
Oh, they could make Nubass with a proper 303 filter! Why not, Korg? )) Other features are great.
No, everyone doesn't want the same sound of the 303!
How is the minikey connected to the TD 3?
its all done via the laptop
Looks like you had the env mod on the td-3 down which effectively closes the filter really quickly (even with the filter fully open) - could not tell were it was on the volca but my guess that's why the waveforms weren't coming up as sharp.
I remember fiddling round with them for ages to get them closer so can’t imagine I’ve made such a rookie error 🤞😂 I will definitely have tried at lots of settings. They are known for being a little dull compared to an OG and there’s a mod you can do - a trimpot if you open it up.
@@StarskyCarr Yes those knobs are so unpredictably interactive, makes the performance aspect really fun and satisfying but less so when trying to replicate and record a specific tonal movement haha!
@@StarskyCarr Got to admit it the envelope speeds and depth seem to affect one another, it's impossible to fully understand exactly what is going on! Everything on that beast is so interactive but I love it 🤣🤣🤣
I wouldn’t buy from DV247, or their German parent company for Korg products, who won’t honour any warranty claim in UK from anyone buying outside preferred UK distribution partners (which is illegal within Eurozone as it ultimately means territorial price fixing).
And just an update on this Nov20, Korg, Roland, Yamaha, Guitar Guitar, Gak, Andertons and others were all heavily fined for cartel price fixing by the UK Competition Commission.
How do you get the td-3 to sound on the korg keyboard?
It’s connected via a MIDI interface on the computer
Starsky Carr if you have time can you explain how to do that, can you do that with the volca too
@@jdssurf you can do it with anything. You need to connect a MIDI keyboard to your computer then using with a DAW, or something like MIDI Patchbay (its for the Mac but there will be other things you can use for the PC) set the 'MIDI in' channel as the keyboard and the 'MIDI out' as the TD-3 or whatever you've got connected. It's really simple.
Starsky Carr do I have to record it or can I just play live through my monitors or headphones..............sry, long time guitar and bass player but love electronic music too, noob to setting it up though, and with all the COVID it’s hard to get help
Jbird if you have a midi keyboard with 5 pin din MIDI OUT you can plug it direct into the TD3 5 pin MIDI in and play live. No computer needed.
What about the Mk 1Volca bass
No Accent, no Slide, but 3 oscillators..
I'll take 3 TD-3s...and a cup of coffee, thank you very much! 😁
Korg is weird with keyboards. Korg Monologue starts with an E. Korg Volca Nubass, Bass, Kick, and Modular start with A. Volca FM and Keys starts with F. Musicians can adapt easily enough, but it does seem strange to buck conventions. It's a matter of what compromises to accept in a design with a limited number of keys. E-to-E range of Monologue was designed to match up more easily with what a bass guitarist plays. I'm not sure why some of the Volcas start on A. Maybe to make it easier to play A minor without having to bump the octave up and down constantly to find the notes?
31:25 I spent a lot of my youth using ReBirth RB-338 (a 303 emulator) and there's definitely entire songs made on that...probably easier to change between patterns etc on a digital 303 tho 😐
The Nubass doesn't really come alive, in my opinion, without an overdrive or fuzz pedal. I use a Swollen Pickle by Way Huge. I want the overdrive vacuum tube standalone effects pedal by Korg that I never hear anyone talk about but it's quite powerful from the videos I've seen and I want one specifically for the Nubass to give it some balls.
I had the korg volca bass and the filter sounded very unpleasant at high resonance, with this the same thing happens, simply the filter is unpleasant with a tinnitus
Yeah i was thinking the same thing the volca bass resonance is screechy. The TD-3 is nicer on the ears.
Quite new to all this, if you added a compression guitars pedal or similar would that help with nu bass?
@@Unknown-gg4vq I run mind into a Volca mix which has a stereo expander and compressor built into it along with a BP filter on all 3 channels. It definitely helps with the overall sound design your hoping to reach tonally over your mix.
In general terms Volca nubbas or Td-3??
generally Nubass, for 303 TD-3
I gave this video the 303rd like
The best bass line machine I ever had was an mc-202. It had 2 channels of sequencer and you could make one channel just control the filter while the first channel controled the notes
On the Korg you can adjust the filter (plus most other things) using the movement mode which is really nice. Can’t remember if I demo’d it.
@@StarskyCarr either way you really do a good job on your videos
David Robertso - what a B**tard to program though! Mine ended up being used more as a sync 24 splitter. No random LFO either, used to love that on the SH.
I love the MC202. They are getting valuable and I did wonder if the Crave would be a suitable replacement but I sold that on. My 202 is poorly at the moment but if I fix it successfully, I’ve decided to keep it. Goes great with my little modular, when it worked!
Skootaman - good luck with the repair!
I've got both....toyed around with them a few minutes then put them aside. But wait....my plan is for later use. I know the value of what these units can do. I have power cords for both..The USB port on the korg can be used by connecting a printer cable then attaching a cellphone charger block...I hate having to depend on batteries for electronic music equipment....give me AC power all day.
The Korg has more functions and options but I prefer the classic sound of the td-3
There's no denying the classic is a classic for a reason. I like the smoothness of the volca, but if you're after a 303.. TD-3 :)
For me, I like the fact that the korg sounds a little bit less tired and clichéd than the td3
I picked the nubass, the behringer is more than usable, but i prefer the nubass over it sonically.
I can't stand the tiny pin point knobs on the volca stuff. Not a fan of the membrane keys either, interesting you prefer those to the actual buttons on the Berhinger which I prefer greatly to the Volcas..
It's a while ago since I made this so I can't remember exactly what I said... but I think it was the fact that you can actually play the notes on the Korg which you can't on the B or a real 303... although now I think about it there may be a way in a specific mode. .it's just not as easy as the Korg
Why tf is the volca's "keyboard" inverted colourwise?
It’s cool!
Behringer size far more useful when tweaking.. those tiny KORG Volta’s cramp my hands after an hour of playing around
Very great bass line Korg nubass
Not the same price on this side of the Atlantic anymore
Volca nubass $189.99
vs.
TD-3 solid colors $129.00 and transparent colors $109.00
I own a TB303 and went with the td3 ..the volca sounds like a Casio toy and i disliked it a lot
If you want something more like a tb303 go with the behringer
does the plastic bother you at all? I heard it feels so cheap but sounds so great. what are your thoughts on the tb03?
I had both of them. More functions on the Volca (Attack, sub, LFO), a lot easier to program, best sound (for me), I kept it and sold the TD-3..
They are all made out of plastic units even the original TB-303 and TB03
Ofc it’s not going to sound like a 303, Volca bass is better than the nubass and much more versatile
@@caleb4369 maybe, but no Glide and no Accent..
The original Volca Bass has more sound variations than the NuBass. Many TD-3 owners are experiencing quality control issues with their units as a result of Chinese mfg'ing ramping up production during Covid pandemic. Alot of retailers are receiving many TD-3 returns.
The NUBass is a completely different synth than the volcano bass, I’m with the distortion and sub etc. It gets different tones, so not really comparable. I’ve had no problems with my Behringer units, except for a couple of firmware updates that were/are needed in the WASP and CAT. I’m wary of singling out a particular manufacturer for faulty units as I’ve had issues with units from EVERY major supplier, including all most of what we consider to be the top tier high quality synths.
