Megalopolis - Weighty but Wandering

I took the opportunity to watch Francis Ford Coppola's new film "Megalopolis" in IMAX on Friday, September 27, 2024. While visually stunning it suffers a bit from a somewhat weak storyline and characters that lack depth. That being said it tackles a lot of issues with fervor and has an interesting and compelling visual style. The style does wander and shift cross the 138 minute run time which is rather strange and, at the end of the day, left me impressed by the scale and scope of the film while being somewhat unsatisfied with the result.

Excellent, well thought out review. Glad you focused on the movie, not the drama. Spoon fed - thank you for pointing that out. Audiences are lazy, a Marvel Movie syndrome (and I do enjoy a good Marvel Movie), but Megalopolis is a movie of a different order - an experience. Characters weren’t as fully developed because there were meant to function as archetypes. Structure of this movie was non traditional, so things functioned differently. Kudos to FFC for giving us this daring vision. Time will be kind to this movie.
