I flew to Las Vegas with @EBCBrakesUK for the 2nd year in a row to help @Petrolheadonism unload @MatArmstrongbmx's broken Audi RS6. After offloading and looking around the Battle Of The Builders section, I quizzed Mat about exactly what happened.

You can tell Mat is not a long-term Jap car owner. My first thought would have been octane booster with this car at that tune. If I ever have to put some 95 Ron in one of my Subarus, I crawl til I can fill up with 99.
For a country that started wars just to steal their oil, you'd expect them to have good fuel. It's notoriously bad compared to what we have in Europe.
Great stuff. I love these show videos, especially places like SEMA where I'm unlikely to ever get. Your knowledge makes for really enlightening content and your enthusiasm is very evident. Looking forward to the rest of the SEMA videos.

Whenever I drive my tuned twin turbo Toyota Soarer here in Australia, it has a flex fuel sensor and a rotary switch to control the boost. Each point on the switch has a different map.
If I'm running 98 Octane, I dial the boost all the way down (400hp is the lowest setting), and if E85 is available, I can push the power up to 550hp.
In any case Mat probably should have brought a few bottles of octane booster with him, and given he needed the Audi for transport, I'd probably have not drag raced it.
Octane isn't boost limited unless it's 35psi/40psi+... It's Ignition Timing. You can run FAR more timing on E85, i run up to 17* at 35psi on E85 vs 35 psi and 4.5* 98 octane.
@@VuBeClan It’s all related… more boost means more heat and more pressure which affects timing. The RS6 has capacity to run lower powers for different octanes but the tuner obviously didn’t set them up…

Thank you so much for the video and the explanation about MAT RS 6 . For European people the SEMA SHOW is so hudge . I am just a fan, i don't know all the rules of the SEMA battles.
The Fuel makes sense. The U.K. Honda FK8 produced 316bhp but the US Honda FK8 only had 306bhp. There was a video where Honda pro Jason asked a an engineer at the factory in Swindon why there was a difference. The answer was inferior US fuel.
You have to compare apples to apples octane rating. Regardless, 10 HP less for $5/Gal+ less, not a bad trade. We have 93 octane here in Maryland, USA, which is close to the 99 UK. Fuel octane and bio fuel mix varies here by state and gas supplier, to say inferior U.S. fuel is a lazy generalization.
As for the RS6 issue, if it is fuel related, then they should have been wise enough to adjust the tuning to octane before drag racing…stupid. Oh, and overtuned, highly stressed Audi engines do tend to blow up at drag strips. Sounds to me they finished off an engine that was already overstressed and overused, not so much fuel caused.

Done a chain if all plugs were bust maybe the fuel my money its done a chain or snapped a camshaft as well, when they are new you gotta run them in you cant get in it and give it the billy bigfoot

For the sparkplug to be destroyed, I'm betting the motor jumped timing and or chain broke. Low grade fuel had little to do with it. Higher octane, maybe but lower grade shouldn't grenade a motor like that. I work in construction, I have no idea what I'm saying.

If it was fuel, it would be a clogged injector. I guess a clogged injector made the car go lean. I would do a flow test on the injectors to confirm if this is what caused it.
Wrong maps could make sense aswell since whe uk ans us have different altitudes rights, so different air density?(lmk if im wrong about that assumption)

Fuel? Its the mapping. A good map knows what to do when the engine is running on crap fuel. Love to see the engine swap (with bigger turbos) :P
nah. It's the ECU, and the MED17 ecu's don't have built in protections especially when tuners demic the knock sensors.
@@VuBeClan Why the hell would you blame an ECU for a garbage tuner that removes knock / ping derating. Running an engine with 0 protection is beyond idiotic as fuel quality will always vary.
@@electricsnut because the ECU has something called 'RON' detection and detects what type of fuel is in the car. Please educate your self more about the MED17 ecu

@@electricsnut tune map? you're talking to a tuner. There is an 'adder', not a 'tune map'. It's an adder to the base timing map, based on octane differences you can add timing to selective areas in airmass.
@matarmstrongbmw fuel issues makes sense now you mention it.. American fuel definitely made the car run lean if their super unleaded is only the equivalent of our normal unleaded

Nothing to with the fuel, modern cars more so top the range cars have knock sensors. The Audi would have advanced the timing to counteract the detonation problem
You are talking about factory cars, on modified cars it's up to you if you include these things. If you dont plan on using different types of fuel it is normal to tune it to the one you will use. Advancing the timing will destroy the engine faster..
@@noddey No 2 batches of fuel are the same… if your tuning to one tank of fuel on the ragged edge with no safeties then you’re an idiot lol. It has a tune and exhaust lol, hardly modified.
@@electricsnut i dont understand what you mean. If you tune a car for 98ron you will get problem when dragrace on 95 if you have mapped the engine to its potential. i dont know what mods or tune that has been done and it doesnt sound like you do either.

A Buddie of mine also blown he's engine in a simular way, cylinder 5 left the chat, he drove it on pump feul 95 okt, tuned to about 730 bhp, top tuners here in sweden NEVER recommend the 95 okt, only 98 or higer when tuned, probably the same on yours Mat

if your tuned on 93 file, and you put a lower grade fuel & beat on the car, you will most definitely blow the motor
