  • On this episode of Matt's Rad Show. I visited Skyline Neon in Downtown Minneapolis to hang out with Matt Thompson. He's been creating Neon Signs for over 30 years. In this episode we'll get to explore his shop full of an amazing collection of Neon signs and Sputnik signs. We also get to learn how a Neon sign is made.
I also get a chance to do some glass bending. This was a truly amazing find and I can't thank Skyline Neon and Matt Thompson for having me out to do the episode! Be sure and check them out at www.skylineneonsigns.com

I love neon signs! My dad had a ton of old beer signs. What a cool place!

I learned how to bend glass as a teen, by my 20's I had set up my own home neon shop. back in the 1980's it was still common. Now as you said it is very rare. I have not messed with any of this in decades now, not sure if I still have the burners but I made my own bombarding setup from a distribution transformer from an old office building. The thing I like the most about cold cathode lighting is that it is the only form of light you can build yourself, like an incandescent light. Glass, gas and metal for electrodes. The backlit flourescent sign replaced neon even though is takes a lot more energy. Now with channel letters all being plastic covered, neon has been replaced with LED's. I wonder if since so many neon shops have closed can you find used equipment available again?

Just watching this now in 2023 your commentary reminds me so much of my cousin Jerry who my family lost to suicide these 25 years ago when I was 14 and in 8th grade. He was my oldest cousin and by far my favorite even though he was much older than me. I miss him to this day and I just wish He could have known that truth better. That seasons do change...the bad things dont last forever. I love you forever Jerry Beck II.

Today, a thought popped into my mind: "how do they get the gas into the bulbs without it burning/exploding/escaping ? I mean, they *have* to use a flame to melt the glass tube shut, don't they? How do they do that?"
Your video is both awesome and an interesting, thorough answer to my question, so I subbed - even though I haven't checked what else you do. If this video's quality of content is the standard, I won't regret my subscription (not that I often do).

Maybe about 10 years ago I was thinking to myself that you don't see Neon signs that much, I wonder if neon signs will make a resurgence in the future. My brother has a Victoria Bitter neon sign in his room somewhere and it still works. At for those Sputnicks, even though neon has fallen out of favour because of LEDs, I'd think you could make modern equivalents of those with LEDs, they may not look the same, but they'll still get the message across. I'm pretty sure I heard your microphone picking up interference from some of those signs.

Do you all want to know what I would like to see made into a neon sign? The Universal Studios Florida logo that was used from 1990 to 1998 as well as the Universal Studios Hollywood logo.
I would want a small neon sign of that for my bedroom.
