- We test a new invention can potentially bring your carbureted engine into the 21st century. Progression Ignition's new distributor allows you to set your spark advance, advance curves, rev limiter and more right from your smartphone. There is even an included MAP sensor to develop a vacuum advance table and even provide easy timing retard if you are running turbos or superchargers.

As an EFI owner with timing control, I think this is a fantastic product. Being able to tune the timing for cruise, part throttle, and WOT without ever popping the hood is so much better. A HUGE perk of this system that I can see is the 12x12 table. That gives a very good resolution to help fine tune. Compare that to the Fitech's 3x3 table.
Holley Sniper uses 31x31 tables. Way better than fitech. This is pretty impressive for a standalone distributor. If I didn't already have computer controlled timing, I'd definitely look into it.
I just installed one in my gen 6 454... Best distributor I've run so far.
Like the idea of computer controlled vacuum advance with a map sensor rather than depending on a mechanical vacuum cannister like an old school distributor
Dad Food I have msd 6al2 programmable. You use a distributor lockout plate (or lockout your distributor if it has that option) , then set total timing up. From there you go to MSD program on the computer and tell it where to pull timing vs rpm. This eliminates the need for vacuum advance.
This setup is more user friendly, but im curious if it can compete with the spark production of the msd unit and extra features of the MSD (2step,launch control).
I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the bigger companies tries to purchase this technology.

big cap HEIs and tall manifold dont mix well on windsors..
Fitted one to my 6 inline 1959 Holden and it works perfectly. Absolutely ideal for old school carby engines.

I love the technology put into this distributor almost as much as it scares me. It kind of makes a non computerized car, a computerized car. Not a fan of computerized cars.
Now someone just needs to make one with individual cylinder timing adjustments like the old NASCAR distributors but with vacuum advance and electronic control.
very cool. Would be really cool to see it have an idle control function where it will add and subtract timing to maintain idle speed like the OEM ECU controlled fuel injection cars do. I"m assuming that would be very easy to add since the changes would all software.
It does this to a point. The MAP sensor senses engine load, such as a/c or electric fan kicking on and increases timing/torque to compensate.
That technology is already available on Yamaha 4-stroke motocross dirt bikes, you can adjust igntion AND fuel curves with your smart phone, connecting to the bike's control module by Bluetooth signal.

Haha progression knows what they have. Its actually cheaper to ditch your msd and convert. Just sell it on eBay to recoupe some $$$

Why not just use your MSD controller with your MSD distributor
Just for anyone curious.. I'm not doubting the company, but they haven't updated any of their social media accounts (facebook, twitter, youtube, etc...) in over a year. You'd think that a new company with a great product would want to sell as many as possible right?
Their customer service and help desk is live. I asked a question recently, Aug 2023, and got a quick response.

I just installed this in my 65 GTO powered by Fitech-equipped big-cam 406 smallblock Chevy. Ignition is awesome. One part you got backwards, though. Max vacuum is at the lower end of the Y-axis. WOT is is at max kpa.

I’ve been running a fitech 800 mean street for 4 years now and love it but I want to be able to control my ignition on the fly on my 512ci Mopar.
There is a company in the Netherlands (123 ignition) that does a very similar product. Down side to their units, is you can't alter the timing values on the fly. So you end up doing a total power run every time you make an adjustment
Not true, with Progression Ignition you can make changes with the engine running.

I just bought one to replace a vacuum advance HEI and it is awesome! You can add a degree or two on the fly from the drivers seat plus many other adjustments. It is spot on.
Sounds like a cool system. All the bonus of having a ign box without needing one.
One thing that always may be wonder. How does it control the timing when the rotor is turned by the engine? does it physically move the rotor to adv and ret the timing?

LOVE MINE. The lockout feature is underrated. Any other lockout setup could be bypassed. This thing locked means swapping the dizzy to steal the car. aint happening.

They do have a separate HEI option. I think something like what you are talking about would be a very interesting use for one of these because you are often running the engine under load at part throttle. Possibly you could tune your timing maps using the manifold pressure to maximize power and fuel efficiency. Thanks for watching!
Would I be able to take it out and put in a different engine of same style, I have 1985 351 Windsor stock engine but later down the road if I wanted to move it to another 351 would I be able to? Thanks for any help
Yeah, but what about normal vehicles? If a put a carburetor, a smaller carburetor on my chevy 350v8 g20 van, will this thing make it have more power with better MPG?
I messaged the company and got little to no feedback. Any kind of warranty on it how much testing has been done to prove it especially for longevity. You break down on the side of the road you're kind of screwed. Do the parts in the distributor hold up to heat?
No answers, a bad sign. The unit is probably made in China which you want to avoid.
If you go to the website, it says designed and made in America. One year warranty.

I'm wanting to perhaps do it, because I don't see how the module under so small a cap has the hardware to generate spark all the way to 10,000 RPMs.
But If i can take that allegedly hotter spark from the MSD to 10,000 RPMs, instead of the claimed 3000, that would be fantastic!

I'm rebuilding my k code 289 and this what I've been looking for...wanting to keep it stock looking as possible. Question? Do they make a conversion for sbf distributors? Like to run the stock kcode distributor housing with modern technology
They have an application for smallblock Ford but it is the entire distributor. There is no way they could reliably stuff this technology into a 60 year old antique distributor.

@@Dogleg1957 I installed one in my 66 Mustang. If I were to do it over I would get this. The Pertronix vacuum advance is 18 degrees, way too much. They do make an adjustable canister so I ordered it. When I went to install I realized the entire distributor had to be disassembled all the way down to driving out the roll pin and removing the drive gear. Adding insult to injury was the fact that the vacuum advance mechanism broke during adjustment. They offered to send me another one but I was damned if I was going to tear down the distributor again. Judging from the reviews on Summit, failure in that part is common. I've only had the Progression for a few days but so far I am very impressed. There is so much more to ignition timing than setting your initial and determining your all in RPM.

DID ALOT OF LOOKING INTO THIS BUT, WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU LOSE YOUR PHONE OR SOMEONE ELSE HAS THE SAME APP?
The distributor comes with a four or five (I can't remember off-hand) pin number that is unique to each unit. So if you lose your phone you just download the app to any bluetooth capable phone or tablet, upload your personal pin and you are good to go. If someone else has the app, they cannot connect to your distributor unless they know your unique PIN. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

Igniter vs Points distributor vs HEI
I have a 1990 Lincoln Town with the Windsor V8. Looking for tune-up advice, how to get the best fuel efficiency. upgrading does sound like less maintenance but questioning ROI Return On Investment? btw the car has sat for 8 years and running well on warm days. but if I don't let it warm up 20* F or colder and try to drive off after 10 min it seems rough until it gets to operating temp. also after 45 to 1hr idle to op temp. it will kill the motor most of the time when I change gears R or D. I haven't noticed during warmer days dying during gear change but I have only had it for three weeks.
Let's be realistic here... it's a $500+ distributor for a car that will have a ton of issues from sitting for so long... spend that money on GOOD tune up parts and get everything working nice and smoothly before even considering upgrading stuff.

i believe a well maintained analog distributor, will make the same power to 7500 rpm. most of us want set it and forget it technology, instead of just learning to maintain our equipment.
It needs more inputs to be better than a mechanical advance, vacuum advance distributor, tps and or vacuum.
I'd love to have the 10 degree start on my mechanically locked, Vacuum advance manifold ported HEI.
If you actually know how to properly set up the different facets of your distributor then it will work great and once done you can typically leave it alone. This electronic unit just makes setting it up much easier and faster plus it has the starter retard and rev limit built in which are nice features. I would assume the rotor is perfectly phased considering the timing is controlled electronically.....

Every distributor has a unique 4 digit PIN number built in at the factory. Security is not an issue.

So with this you don’t even need a timing light you just set that on your phone
Sort of. You do need a timing light to set the initial timing at 10 degrees BTDC, but once you've got that locked in you are good to go. The app can advance or retard the timing wherever you like, and at least from my testing, it is very accurate. Thanks for watching.

24 degress of idle timing shocks me
That is with low manifold vacuum, which means you've opened up the throttle and there is more load on the engine. That helps build torque so the engine can accelerate.
Stock LS engines idle at 25-30 degrees.
Matheus Marchiori why ? Because you read timing placards on the radiator support of old cars ? Performance engines do not like to idle at 8-10-12 etc degrees of initial timing . Stock style distributors also advance timing wayyyy to late and have a huge spread inbetween initial and total advance , keeping you from running more timing at idle , as your total timing will be much to high . Any kind of performance camshaft (above approx 225-230 degrees duration) will have crap idle and throttle response with under 15-20 degrees initial .
Just built a customer hot street 383 with 252-256 @.050 and initial is set at 22 degrees 👍
